After my recent jaunt across the water to NY , I was happy to experience David at the Loft , Timmy at Shelter , Herb and Wil Milton at TIS digging a little deeper in the crates for that stranger non formula house record to play on my ears .
I'm fully aware that alot of people on this board play some off key music , but which dj has consistently pushed other types of music in his/her set when you have heard them . In my ears there's nothing better when the dj breaks it up a little and drops in the unexpected but at the same time their choice fits in so well . Also it would be interesting to keep on the topic of records so if your memory serves correct try and remember five or so records you heard them play ? .

Here's a fab five from my good mate Harvey on different nights .

Rolling Stones - Emotional rescue
jeff Wayne - War of the Worlds - I forget which track .
UB40 - Don't break my heart 12" ( yes 12" it never sounded so good .
Sheila E - A Love Bizzare
Ned Doheny - To prove my love
Flash in the Pan - Waiting for a Train .

This might feel like I post these type of questions alot in which case your right but it's a great part of my night out how about yours ? .

Peace Alex :D

There's a DJ in my hometown named Christian Pronovost who never ceases to amaze me with his music. He happens to own a very good record store called inbeat that has been around for more than the last decade.

There are so many things he's played that were like what you are describing, but I can't remember all of them, I guess it's an integral part of his style. Some people find him annoying, but for real music lovers his sets are always a trip.

It's like one minute you realise you are dancing to something you weren't expecting to hear (the last time I heard him play it was the Sex Pistols) and then blaaaaam! The beat comes back in!

For me the best DJs are the ones who can understand the element of suprise and put a little drama in their mixes.
