I remember it too.
But I was small and never learned it.
Can you describe the movements of "The Smurf" dance and/or post a link to a video of it please.
I remember another dance around that time called Rockin , and also
the Webo , and a few years later a dance called The Pee Wee Herman.
Any video links to any of them ?

See thats why i like reggae dancehall culture because only they can still have something as playful as naming dances.

We did the Smurf like this...
To the left first--Take arms across body to the right like you were about to dig a hole (draw arms up in bow) then drill down..take two steps left (opposite action) & then you do the same thing the other way...
(It looks like a shuck 'n jive.)
Of course you could double-up on it & make it yours...
Hayle...you could be Vanity smurf (hold up fake mirror)...Smurf (play with your hair)...etc. --all done while smurfing...

Do you know how hard it is to find a proper clip of someone actually doing the old hip-hop dances like the Cabbage Patch & the Smurf?
The things I have actually found make me feel sad for hip-hop.

The smurf and the Webo was big around 82-83 shortly after the Spank, the Patty Duke and the Freak(late 70s-81). Yall remember these:
-The Charlie Chaplin(82)
-The Baseball(83)
-The Caveman(82-83)
-The stomp(we use to rock that dance to Soul Sonic forces "lookn for the funk beat")
-The Rooftop (85)
-The happy feet(85)
-The Brooklyn Happy feet(85)
-the James Brown(86)
and of coarse
THE WOP(86)...

-the Jerry Lewis!!!
Yeah I remember most of them you mention.
I can still do THE WOP(86) too.
But I could never understand how and where did the name
THE WOP come from ?????
There was another dance around 85 or so , where you would sort of raise hands to the left , and move them in motion as if you were polishing the air , and the move the raised hands to the right , and do the same thing.
I seem to remember associating Moris Day to this dance for some reason too.
Anyone know the name of this dance ?
Also , I think I recall the Webo being performed in the Film Wild Style.
Kick Dancing was another Dance which i only ever saw those clubbers from the Funhouse do (Around 84).
Rockin was just holding your hands close to your chest , and sort of moving them in sort of up and down movement. But just going from memory.
I associate this with dancing to raggae of 1980 and 81 for some reason.

I think the dance you're refering to (associated with Morris Day) was "The Bird". I definately remember that one. We use to rock that dance to songs like "Set it off".
I think I remember the Kick dance also where you would kick one foot out front wards while at the same time you fall on your hine leg (Simutaniously), then your 2 feet meet in the middle and then you repeat the process kicking your other foot out while fallin on you other hine leg. Sometimes you and your boy would do a routine by holding hands like you're giving each other a pound like manner and rock this dance. Real big in late 83/early 84...
You remember when dudes use to dance in circles(Not to be mistaken with circle dancing). But when 3 or 4 dudes was actually walkin in a circle doing different spontanious moves like jumpn in the air, then come down and slap the floor and then due a leap while kickn one leg back then bringn the same leg behind your calf, going into a ground spin, bring yourself back up, pause for a second, then continue in the circle. i remember the leap part while kicking one leg back, Brooklyn dudes got wind of it later and called it "the Rambo"(but w/o the spin). But within the BX and uptown it never had a official name. This was real big in spots like Skate Key and the Rooftop. It kind of started the whole bag pack era around 85-86. It became big shortly after the Rooftop dance came out in 85 when cats started sportn Faided hair cuts, Ray Charles shades, AJ baggy jeans or black and grey 2 tone Taylords(Lees were dead by this time), K swiss, Stan Smith addidas, and oversize tees and sweatshirts. And at this point you really had to be nice to participate with this style of dance. Oh the memories....
