I feel like I'm doing 5 employees jobs.

When the job market turns around. They are gonna lose the good workers.

What do you think?

tell me about it, phil. i work for verizon, the data services assurance center(NOC), and we have been hearing about verizon already moving some jobs to PI and i read a quick article about another company moving their services to india to take advantage of the cheap labor. when i think about how greedy some of these corporations are i get this sick feeling in my stomach and it ****ing scares the crap out of me that my job might be next. mad1.gif

I think it depends upon what industry you are in and even to that extent what niche your job is or is not filling. This crappo economy gave companies license to clean house of dead weight in addition to just reducing numbers overall. So while you may be doing the job of 5 (which sucks no doubt) be thankful you were not seen as being either dead weight or non-essential. So while this too shall pass - it may be that when all is said and done you've increased your skills and causes your next job to pay you that much more.

I am not singing the company song, cause there is many a day when this place can kiss my black ass, but I am glad that I have not been seriously adversly affected by this market and knew enough to reinvent myself when the business they brought me in to do dried up after 9/11. Sometimes you just gotta suck it up and remember when the market picks up - which it will - you can be out with more money and on to other things. Too many people are unable to reinvent themselves and that where they get screwed.

My department is filling positions through temp agencies. We haven't hired a full time employee in over 1 year. Shit is scary up in here.

Yeah, basically what they want to do is allow businesses to give you comp time in place of time and a half cash. Then the businesses won't allow you to use your comp time. This is already in place now where I work in Civil Service in Nassau County,NY. While we still have the option of cash or comp, they only allow use in quarter day slots. I had an hour and change of comp time left at the end of the year, but lost it because I wasn't allowed to use it! I was never informed or aware until my time & leave statement came and I questioned the loss!

We also are under the threat of layoffs come Sept. 1st. Our new contract that was ratified is deemed too generous. We must work 15 min. more a day & all we're getting is a 2.5% raise once and then COLA increases. Cops out here make 100G's a year & are fighting tooth and nail not to give back anything. They go to arbitration, which we can't, and the County is beholden to abide by whatever the arbitrator gives them. That's why some officers make more than the County Executive with overtime factored in. The outgoing Commissioner left with a half mil compensation parachute & several top brass came close to that. In addition, we lost many experienced workers when buyouts were offered last year. Added credit was given according to your years of service. We that are left are literally doing the work of 5 people. Letters were sent out informing homeowners of arrears in tax payments last week. People were lined up to the elevators waiting for help today and several phones had to go unanswered because they're aren't enough workers here anymore.

This era reminds me of the Regan era. Employers / supervisors never failed to stress "There are 25 people in line for your job". During the Regan era any job was considered a good one (to strech (s/p) the truth a bit).

What do you think? It's going to be like this for a while now.
A lot of comapny's are looking into there P&L ( profit and lost) and if the company can get around from losing stock value, etc. they will lay off to reduce there payroll and assighn other job's to the employees they keep.
The 2 major bad thing's about this is that the employee is over-work and 2, there isnt a pay increase with other duty's.
