This morning I was listening to talk radio and a couple of callers made negative comments about this movie. They complained that the movie displayed negative stereotypes of blacks in particular Steve Martin's mimic of black Hip Hop culture. They also commented that some of Queen Latifah's dialogue was demeaning. I havent seen the movie or so much as a preview and I dont make judgements without investigating first. Has anyone seen this movie or is there anyone who refuses to see the movie because of the previous reasons?

I just haven't been interested because it's the same pseudo-race culture, fish out of water story we've seen ten thousand times already. That plot device has been reused so often, it's hard to believe that someone could have knitted it into another feature.

The bad part is I think she was the executive producer.

I didn't take this movie seriously......
I enjoyed the film........period.

There are some funny laugh out loud moments throughout the film in which EACH performer shines in the film.

The GOOD part is that Queen Latifah is one of the executive producer.

Again, I didn't take this film TOO seriously!

Yeah, I saw the film and it was funny. Some of the stereotypes were negative though, but overall it was good film.

I worried that this was more "blackstick" (see, I used my new word in a sentence), but I had hoped that with Queen Latifah involved it would at least have a moral or a twist at the end. Is that not the case?

We have so many problems that is going on in the world today.....and a funny movie that pokes fun at everyone no matter what.....is what the world needs. LAUGHTER!

And it's GREAT Timing for Queen Latifah...a #1 hit movie at the box office.....a Oscar nomination......

I thought the movie was very funny. Shit like that you can't take seriously cause it's not meant to be taken seriously. Some people sit around and wait to be offended by something. It's sad.

Whenever stereotypes are sold to the public, everyone says "It's just comedy. Lighten up."

Our problem is that we take things too seriously. Why is it that when we make fun of ourselves it's a mockery but other races create and profit off mockery of their lives and heritage, they don't have a problem. We know our position in the world why do we have to be so serious about everything. Aren't we entitled to laugh at ourselves if we want. Queen Latifah is a confident woman and sure of herself. Give her a break.

I haven't seen the movie but I will. Humor is therapy.

she looked really stupid playing some silly shyt like that...even brittany murphy (who?) played a role beneath herself in "8 mile", but it didn't have to be comedy...another minstrel show, if you ask me...

DISCLAIMER: i haven't seen the movie yet.

But honestly right now HIP HOP Culture is a JOKE!!

These type of in your face bamboozle movies should make us wake up and realize that the WORLD IS LAUGHING AT US...and I say "us" because WE ARE THE DIRECT REPRESENTATION of HIP HOP....

hip hop is a serioulsy wounded animal and rap is the knife in the back. and movies like this are played out and patronizing to both sides of the fence.....

Adding to these statements, any opinions on the upcoming Chris Rock/Bernie Mack movie? It seems to be in the same vein as the Queen Latifah moving (judging from the trailers). Same premise: unhip older Whites get schooled by the young Blacks on how to be "hip."

magic_juan Again - the same stuff.

The motion picture industry is incredibly risk adverse right now. Movies aren't doing as well as one would believe. There is more money being made in sales, but increases in the expense of production, marketing and operations eclipses any gains the media reports.

Recycled plot devices, smaller budgets and financial participation deals are the norm for the studios right now. Queen Latifah is an Exec. Prod. of "Bringing Down the House" because a large portion of her salary, as well as Steve Martin's, had to be put in the hat as incentive. Neither is a box-office guarantee.

You can expect more of the same crap for a while, until the global economy clears up or the industry turns to new talent and new visions to bring it back to life. It happens every decade or so.

I'm loving it, personally. Opportunity knocks.

magic_juan what can be said, this is height of our american culture.... poorly written movies with the dollar being the bottom line. funny is funny, but sometimes you just got to wonder what we're being fed.

So Richard Pryor schooling Gene Wilder on how to be black in Silver Streak wasn't funny?

Get ready to see at least a dozen straight-to-video movies surrounding this very theme starring Michael Rapaport featuring either Snoop Dogg, Mystikal, or Master P.

I haven't seen this movie either and I'm probably not going to. Doesn't look like something I'd enjoy. Black white whatever aside, it just doesn't look funny to me. I much prefer the Queen in Living Single.

I don't find this type of shit funny. I didn't as a child. I don't as an adult. I never will - and it goes for ANY racial bufoonery.
