It looks like it's happening this year on May 24-28 but as of yet there's no official line-up.
My attendence is dependent on the line-up and my financial situation (which is not great right now). If the line-up is close to or better than last year's then it is something to look forward to.

Last year had an interesting division. The first day Deep House ruled the main stage and even throughout the other two days there was major Deep House representation on the main stage. Most of the Detroit Techno jocks were segregated in the "Real Detroit Stage," the big European jocks and Richie Hawtin were segregated on the Beatport stage, the relative lack of representation of Drum & Bass, etc., it could be viewed as a flaw or an advantage but I has happy to catch so many Detroit acts in one place that I was happy. I'm curious about what aspects of last year they will keep and what aspects they will change.

Carl Craig hasn't been involved with the running of the festival since 2001. Currently Paxahau Event Productions is running the festival. Go to www.paxahau.com/about_us.htm (http://www.paxahau.com/about_us.htm) to learn more about them.

Surprised that a lot of soulful DJs were on the main stage & the techno jocks were ina big azz tent...
That's because the main stage is the worst place to play (everybody tries to get out of it; unless they haven't played the festival before)... totally disconnected from the crowd, which is sparse until the evening hours, in what resembles more of a 'concert' than a 'party'. That tent (which Beatport has sponsored for the past two years) has always been the prime spot on the festival grounds. Large enough to get a sizable audience, but still enough intimacy for the DJ/crowd to remain connected in a meaningful way. Also, it is protected from the sun and the eventual rains (has rained every year except once in it's history).

Paxahau closed down the underground stage last year due to it being a 'sonic nightmare echo chamber'. Some people heard rumors (though not from any credible sources) that it might be used this year, but I highly doubt that claim.

Don't shoot the messenger, I'm just passing around what I saw around the net. Paxahau has a formula that they feel would make the DEMF turn a profit and the Beatport stage is a big part of it. That's not the stage that I pay attention to and nothing annouced on this schedule is making me go out of my way to make arrangements to be there.

Not only has the festival been wrestled from the hands of those integrally involved in creating the music and genre but now the whitewashing of the story has begun in earnest. Via this piece and all supporting media articles it basically regards that you "negroes" can't handle money, have no business sense and that we benevolently let you participate in your own creation, as an experiment of course. In the wake of this experiment you proved what we knew, that you can't be trusted with money and don't have the necessary savvy to create a successful enterprise when left to your own devices (unfortunately they got assisted in making a case for that one). To add insult to injury this year Paxahau, in their infinite wisdom has added Moby to the line-up. It's like inviting Pat Boone to Little Richard and Chuck Berry's crib to sing their songs. Or inviting Kenny G. to the bandstand with Miles Davis in his hometown to show him how this horn playing thing is really done. This is an excerpt from the Paxahau site: "As momentum of being the "birth place" of techno ebbs, and many artists and supporters move on to other locales where our music is nurtured and accepted, we stand solid and strong in a sea of adversity, continually striving to expose more people to the world of our music." Who is the "our"? They are standing strong in Ferndale the birthplace of our music obviously and exposing more people to it via true, original talents like Moby, who most assuredly represent Detroit.
Read on and if anyone who is truly from the D with any integrity and respect for what we create as a people can directly participate in this event your Detroit Soul is suspect.

Detroit Electronic Music Festival
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Jump to: navigation, search
The Detroit Electronic Music Festival (DEMF) is an electronic dance music showcase held in Detroit each Memorial Day weekend since 2000. In subsequent years, the similarly themed festivals Movement (2003–2004), Fuse-In (2005) and currently, Movement: Detroit's Electronic Music Festival (2006-present) continue the DEMF's traditions, with each name change reflecting shifts in festival management. All of these festivals featured performances by musicians and DJs, and emphasized the progressive qualities of the culture surrounding electronic music.

[edit] History
The first Detroit Electronic Music Festival was held in 2000, established by Carol Marvin and her company Pop Culture Media. Marvin had previously been a sponsorship organizer for the Ford Detroit International Jazz Festival and Detroit-Montreux Jazz Festival, and was a producer of the 1993 Michigan State Fair.
The DEMF was intended to give Detroit and its overlooked history of electronic music major exposure both locally and nationally. Carl Craig, hired by Carol Marvin to act as "Artistic Director", booked a diverse range of the talent, from big internationally recognized names to lesser-known local talent. Patterned on high-profile dance music festivals in Europe, the DEMF had free admission and attracted many international attendees.
Each festival has been held at Hart Plaza in downtown Detroit, and has been sanctioned and financially supported by the City of Detroit. The city's support for the festival has been seen by many as the first high-profile acknowledgement and celebration of the city as the birthplace of techno music.
[edit] 2000: Successful launch
The first festival occurred in May 2000 and concluded with few hitches and no reported crime. It was applauded by city leaders and tourism officials as an injection of youthful energy into the city.
Attendance at the first DEMF surpassed expectations, with estimates over the three-day run surpassing one million visitors. Subsequent festivals drew even bigger crowds. City officials and others including media observers and local businesses saw the apparent economic boost to the city, with the Visitors and Convention Bureau stating that in only its second year, the event had pumped over $90 million into the local economy.
[edit] 2001–2002: DEMF growth and controversy
In the festival's second year and beyond, there was a veritable explosion of techno music events around Detroit,[citation needed] with many independently organized and impromptu parties packing area clubs and makeshift venues early into each morning.
Controversy ensued when Carol Marvin fired Craig for not fulfilling the terms of his contract. While many of the music fans were upset at his dismissal, many industry insiders understood that though he was a great artist, Craig did not have the business savvy needed to fulfill his contractual obligations. Craig lost two lawsuits against Marvin, with the courts deciding that Marvin was justified in terminating Craig. While Craig insisted he was a "founder" of the event, court documents proved that he was, in fact, hired by Marvin as an employee, and that he was negligent in performing his duties. As new producers handled the festival, media began to question the validity of attendance figures and financial gain. Subsequent producers of the event, Derrick May (Movement) and Kevin Saunderson (Fuse-In), did not deliver the same results that Marvin had, and lost thousands of dollars.
[edit] 2003–2004: Movement
In January 2003, city officials decided to place the event in the hands of popular techno artist Derrick May, who had extensive experience as a touring DJ but no firsthand, large-scale festival production experience.
The second Movement festival took place in 2004, but despite its public success, the event faced significant financial losses and its fate became uncertain
[edit] 2005: Fuse-In
In February 2005, May announced his resignation as festival producer, and the festival once again changed hands. Fellow techno veteran Kevin Saunderson announced plans for a Movement replacement to be called Fuse-In Detroit (later shortened to just Fuse-In, with the tagline "Detroit's Electronic Movement") to be staged Memorial Day Weekend 2005.
Successful negotiations with city officials led to 2005 becoming the first year that an event in Hart Plaza did not have free admission. A total of 41,220 admission passes were sold to Fuse-In visitors. 38,382 daily passes were sold for $10 each, and 2,838 weekend passes, covering the full three days, were sold for $25 each. The City of Detroit collected $1 per pass, and was to have collected 30% of festival profits, but admission pass sales did not recoup the festival's $756,000 budget. [1]
[edit] 2006 - present: Movement
On February 16, 2006, Kevin Saunderson announced that due to financial losses and lack of sufficient promotion, he would not continue to produce the festival in 2006. As of March 23, the city has chosen Paxahau of Ferndale, MI, a suburban Detroit-based electronic record label and booking agency, to produce the festival under the name "Movement, Detroit's Electronic Music Festival." According to Paxahau their selection has been supported by Saunderson, May, and Craig. Though none but May's endorsement has been confirmed. Conspicuously, techno creator/originator Juan Atkins has yet to give a statement regarding the festival.
The Festival happened again in 2006 and 2007 and was successful enough that it is already confirmed to occur again in 2008.

[edit] Attendance
Historically, attendance of events held in Hart Plaza has often been reported as being well in excess of the 14-acre venue's capacity of 40,000 people, even when crowds were counted by police and city officials. The reported attendance estimates for the electronic music festival were as follows:
DEMF 2000: 1.1 to 1.5 million *
DEMF 2001: 1.7 million *
DEMF 2002: 1.7 million *
Movement 2003: 630,000
Movement 2004: 150,000 **
Fuse-In 2005: 44,920 ***
Fuse-In 2006: 41,000 ****
* Based on visual estimates by police and city officials, and conceded by city officials in 2003 to be an overly generous estimate..
** Reported by police on May 30, 2005. [2]
*** 41,220 ticketholders, plus 3,700 DJs, VIPs, and press, reported by The Detroit News and The Detroit Free Press on June 2, 2005. [3] [4]
*** 41,000 tickets, quoted by Kevin Saunderson in Big Shot magazine [5]

Attendance

I'm not going to go through everything, but that e-mail does bring up some good points. I went in 2001 and 2007 and one major difference I noticed is that in 2007, almost all the Detroit acts were segregated into the Real Detroit tent while in 2001, the Detroit acts were spread out among the different tents. I will honestly say, as a spectator who comes mostly for the Detroit acts, it is easier to get around the festival due to this segregation but as someone who wants more accurate representation of the Black contribution to Techno, this is wrong on so many levels. Traveling around the festival, you see how dense the Beatport tent is throughout the day compared to the other three tents and you wonder, why are there more people at, let's say, Hatrdfloor, than say, Claude Young. Yet given the current demographic for this music and the festival, that's who many of the people who travel to the festival come to see.
The Real Detroit stage was created in response to criticism to the lack of Detroit representation in 2006. A quick comparison of the 2006 and 2007 roster in your post could tell you that. I didn't go in 2006 and had no inclination to go because of that line-up if I could recall my own reaction but the 2007 line-up made me jump up and make arrangements to get there. I'm sure in a very small minority (pun intended) who made a decision to go because of the Detroit acts on the line-up.
At the same time, comparing the two stages, I wondered in the back of my mind, whether or not the festival will have this much Detroit representation next year (2008). Judging from what's been announced so far, I still have this thought in the back of my mind. With the inclusion of Moby, the inclusion of "Hipster Rock" and Hip-Hop (I'm not against Hip-Hop at the festival but the Hip-Hop acts I read about seem to have a hipster appeal), it seems that they are going for the current hot crowd for whatever the in sound is in Dance Music this year.
Sorry for this long post but these are some thoughts about the DEMF in general I had to put out there.

I plan on going this year..where is a good place to stay??
I can't really think of anything great (I stayed at Days Inn about a mile and a half away but you could get something better), I would recommend getting a place before the full line-up is announced just to save some money. Prices do go up, although not as extremely as they do in Miami Beach for the WMC.

As for housing you have a couple of choices, you can do the old standbyes of the Marriot Ren Cen, Courtyard by marriot and the Sheraton (formally the Ponchatrain) They all right across the street from the festival. You can also stay at the holiday Inn on Washington which is also within walking distance.
If you want to Ball then you can stay at the MGM Grand or the Motor City Casino.

There are always going to be haters for anytning. Fact is, it's really hard to make a festival of this magnitude financially feasible. And Paxahau are doing it and doing it pretty well. There are more then enough Detroit acts. A whole freaking stage!!! Detroit techno and house is way bigger than Detroit nowadays, so it's only fair that artists from all over the world are performing.
I would definitely check out DBX, Alex Under, Cobblestone Jazz, Zip, Half Hawaii. Then you got your biggest Detroit legends...Hawtin, C2, Derrick May... yeah, bring Moby, why not???? He is a huge star, and he actually knows what Detroit techno is! Let him sell some tickets!

Not a hater, it's just a line-up that I feel isn't worth spending $500.00 minimum to check out, especially when most of the acts I would want to check out is probably is going to play in NYC at some point this year. Now if they announce that someone like say, Robert Hood is playing the main stage then I might reconsider.

Ok you lost me on this, first of all you are right there are going to be haters for anything ,but the reailty of it all is that this festival has lost its inner city feel (soulfullness) paxahau maybe doing a good job of financially handling the DEMF but as far as the including detroit artist that play and make (house/soulful music) that live in the city ,they schedule only handfull(and it did not use to be that way) and its been like that for the last 2 years. (read what i posted above it was an email sent out to peeps in detroit) and check the history of this festival ,in the first 4 years of the DEMF you had the Cpop stage and Music Institute stage which the stages that you would hear the (deep soulful sexy house) and had a nice lineup of detroit house artist as well other house artist from all over,k i can speak on this cause i live here and been every one of these festivals as well played since its start and some changes that have been made had to be made were as other changes are not good Imo ,Oh and what do you mean that detroit techno and house is bigger then detroit explain please.

Honestly, if I'm going to make a financial commitment to a festival, I want to experience something that I won't experience in NYC. Derrick May and Carl Craig practically have residencies in NYC and I do check them out when they are in town if my schedule permits but how often do I get to experience the Three Chairs doing a set together (we often get Theo but we rarely get Rick and Malik, and certainly not all together); how often do I experience Claude Young; etc. That's something you won't get in the DJ touring circuit. It's that something extra that I want to experience and would justify make going to the 2008 DEMF a spending priority.

A Detroit native and lover of the music I see nothing within the line-up that would make me want to spend a dime to check out the festival this year. Knowing several of the performers, I had a pass to check out last years' event and the highlight for me was the 3Chairs, minus Kenny Dixon.
I was very disapointed with Jeff Mills' set. Enjoying Jeff's music and having the pleasure of being on the dancefloors when he would rip us up back in the early to mid 80's, I hoped for the magic I thought he was capable of delivering.
I'll be in the city during the festival, but again, I have no desire to spend the loot to attend this year.

But there are Detroit artists on other stages!!! Hawtin, DBX, Carl Craig..... this is a bunch of horseshit.
This is not a festival for people in Detroit!!!!! If they were so into this music, including this supposedly "sexy and soulful" house, they could do parties year around. But the truth is, there is not much interest for it even in Detroit, and you expect people from all over the world to come to Detroit for that??? People come to hear either the best classic Detroit stuff, which is greatly represented here, or the innovative cutting edge artists, most of which are NOT from Detroit anymore. Plus throw in some more mainstream people like Moby to get the non-underground people to show up. Pretty nice formula that stays true to the purpose of having a festival like this to begin with. And not be going around with buckets like Derrick May did when he ran the festival, and asking people to donate a few dollars or he would lose his house and car......

Yo man you need to check your facts cause you don't know what in the hell your talking about meng im talking about detroit artist that (live in the city) and this festival was created with the ideal of show casing dertroit artist (read the damn history of the festival) so don't tell me what the f**k is going on in my own backyard I was born and rasied here ,and was here when this festival started you don't even live here so how in the hell can you make a statement like that when you live here and have no ideal of whats really going on.
