I have to tell you people something... The reason why I posted this is because most of the music from Brazil is not known by brazilians. I mean the good stuff, like this names and songs you are posting. Most of it is considered "underground!" music here, because only people who realy cares about good music know those artists....I don't know many of the artists you've mentioned. When it comes to our musical culture, it's a fact that brazilians still have a lot to learn about their country... ;)

That's why I want to thank you DHP and say CONGRATULATIONS, you do know good stuff! graemlins/beerchug.gif

keep on posting, although I know it's hard with all that strange names and so on.... :D

I love anything by Antonio Carlos Jobim and Tania Maria too. Its a bit of a standard that has been covered by many. The version by Cosmic Village back in 1997 is pretty awesome.

Its true what Ezy just said...
Unfortunatly, the good music from Brasil that you all know is overrated here and just know for few people.
Since the early 80's, the quality of music in Brasil is falling down. Everybody running after the big commercial hit. Crap music after crap music... You can only save few artists.
Brasil lost its identity in the 80's and 90's...
You can see that throught every post here.
All songs mentioned are from the 70's or earlier...
But things have been changin' a little from few years now, it seems we got a new breath and new faces are showing up doing their thing, plus the few we already had around, making the buzz louder. But this movement, it still underrated by majority and supported for only few though... Anyway, it started to play on the radio and caught the media attention now...

Here are few names i think worth to take a listen to check the brazilian new sound... New and good music! ;)

Maria Rita (Elis Regina's daughter) ;
Paula Lima;
Ed Motta;
Funk Como Le Gusta;
Banda Black Rio (They're back but with new musicians. There is just one guy from the original band).

Maria Rita deserves a extended comment...
It has been 2 years or so that Maria Rita was singing with her band in small bars here in Sao Paulo. With no spotlight at all, and every show was sold out.
She signed with Warner Music Brasil early this year and just released her first album.
Now, she's singing in big theathers and for bigger audiences too and every show sill sold out.
It shows that brazilians still like good music, they only need to know about.
They need info, they need listen to it on the radio...
I think you guys already know this history but with another kind of music, dont you? ;)

We still have a light on...

Years ago I had a House mate from Brazil that shared a lot of music with me. I know she liked a lot of the classics. Joao Gilberto was a constant in the house. I liked him so much, I bought Astrud's album too. Hee, hee. Bossa nova I like a lot. I also like the yoruba influences I hear in some songs.
A bit on Joao: http://www.brazzil.com/p43may98.htm

I love the way he sings this Cole Porter classic:

You do something to me
Something that simply mystifies me
Tell me why should it be
You have a power to hypnotize me
Let me live `neath your spell
You do that voodoo that you do so well
For you do something to me
That nobody else could do.

—Cole Porter (recorded by Joćo Gilberto in 1990)

Hee, hee ... Now you've got me in a Brazilian state of mind. Oh yeah, I picked up an Antonio Carlos Jobim record not too long ago but it's packed up so I can't get the name for you right now. I've also heard collaberations with Joao and stan Getz. Thanks for the list .. More names to check out.

We still have a light on... You can almost say the same thing about American music. Once the "beancounters" took over and sales became even more of an overriding concern, not that they weren't before, things started to change here in the North American music scene as well.

Addition: Ed Motta is a great talent, and I'm really getting a soft spot in my heart for Patricia Marx as well. "Submerso" ROCKS!!! Didn't you do a remix for "Despertar"? I also have a Jair Olivera track you remixed.

Patricia and Jair are part of the new school I mentioned before.
Patricia is a great singer... Her voice is so smooth... She's recording a new album, btw...
Jair is a great musician, great producer and songwriter. There are people that dont like his voice but I like him singing too...

And you're right. I did a remix for Patricia's "Despertar". And for Jair, I did remixed "Bom Dia Anjo" from his album called "Outro" (I love this album) and I just finished another remix for him, the track is called "A Ladeira Leva" from his new album "3.1".

I'm producing my own album now and there will be colaborations from all of them, Patricia, Jair and Ed.
