youth = increased # of potential children = value

women were valued for their child bearing ability. the younger a woman is the more fertile and better chances of having many childern - therefore, better marriage material.

The older a woman gets, the less valuable she is in that scenario... so women were trained to be very sensitve about their age.

although things have changed, the whole age phobia still hangs on... now it has attached to beauty and physical appearance.
