Yes I would. I don't take it for granted that I would recognize any song on any given night.
Question for all of you: How often do you listen to DJs that play songs that you don't recognize all night, regardless of the actual age of the songs?

YES!!!!!! as long as its something that i like. many of my best experiences have come from going to hear dj's that just blowed me away with their song selections even though i was unfamiliar with most of them. this is how i get to know about NEW(to me) music. i actually prefer this than going to hear a dj that plays the same 30 songs that i have been hearing day in and day out for the past year.

If a song is "new to me" then it might as well be "unreleased." It has the same effect on the listener.
Keep in mind, that to most people who go to clubs featuring Dance Music (this applies less to Deep House but it applies neverthless), everything might as be "unreleased" because most people aren't that familar with the music or don't really pay that much attention.
Maybe this backlash against "unreleased materal" has more to do with too many "filler DJs" (people who shouldn't be DJs in the first place) than it does with playing unreleased materal.

That's not my point. My point was that the focus should be on whether the DJ is heat rather than the familiarity of the records. Some DJs could play a crap set using familiar records all night, while others could play an amazing set using records that are (mostly) new to the crowd. Also if a record is "new to me" then for all intents and purposes it might as well be "unrelesed material" because I have never heard it.
"DJs that play unreleased material" is just another gripe about DJs who suck. People who complain about too much DJs playing too much unrelased material are usually saying that the DJ sucks they are just too nice to say it that way.

Yes I most certainly would. I'd much rather frequent a dj who is playing new shyt rather than old shyt all night. I like a classic here and there mixed in between, but it's the new released and unreleased that keep house alive. After all, classics were once new at some point. Today's hott new shyt is tomorrow's classic.
Cee, one of the reasons i'm always at your sets is because of your music selection both released and "especially" unreleased. I like to hear what's out there instead of hearing the same songs every dj and their daddy is playing. I can listen to that on my on. The day you start playing the same ol shyt everyone is playing from trax (there is life beyond traxsource if ya look) is the day I smack ya across the forehead. lol Do "your" thing and keep that UNRELEASED shyt coming for the fellow addicts like myself. I guess it's a matter of taste for some, but dayum why listen to the same ole same ole ALL the time when there is such a grand variety out there? That's what I love about this music. There is soooooooo much out there and it just keeps on coming. That's right, feed my dependency!!!

But he does make a valid point.
Think about it, you're playing a form of music that has a niche market, where access to the buying public is limited compared to mainstream music. Do the patrons that frequent these clubs live and breathe the music? Or are they there just to have a good time regardless of what is being played by the DJ. Do these "9 to 5'ers" really care or aware that the music being played is unreleased or exclusive?
Seems to me that the only people who know that the music is Unreleased or new are the DJs, producers, and a handful of dancers and listeners, depending on your crowd size.

In this day and age, any producer can put his joint up on Myspace and sell it for a profit, but that's just it, you won't get shit for it. If you shop it, and a label signs it, it can take months for it to get released and by the time the release date arrives, 1, the buzz is gone, 2 access to the tracks via digital download has killed potential sales of your music.
So, it's not a case of "no wonder why producers don't make money" people, simply put, want your shit for free, Primarily DJs.

been saying this for years. playing music "all night" that will never see the light of day is pointless. playing music that people cannot connect with (familiarity) defeats the purpose, imo.
on another note, having all this new music availbale on the web has caused cats to go into an "ultra" new music frenzy. its like, if you play some shit that's six months old, you're late. i ain't falling for it.

Like back in the day and even today..... you can hear great music on college radio instead the main stations.......
Futhermore when you do have DJ's that bring the new muzik ....the resident make sure they open the party and play before the crowd get there.....to protect they own vested interest.........
Lastly the club owners and promoters don't know or care its a matter of dollars and cents to them....... they bring in a name cuz they heard this DJ is hot not for actual skills or selection.... for dem its abt money and who can pack them in and if playin BAD LUCK edits does that then they gonna run wit it......

Spoken like a cat who's been around for a minute and gets it.
I think it depends largely on the jock. When Sting plays 5 unreleased cuts in a row at Shelter, it's usually chaos, because A) He's a bad mofo. B) He's probably getting his hands on tons of shit all of the time and he's picking out the joints that fit his style and the style of the club. That's right. A few jocks actually have unique styles, but only a handfull in this share/mimic age.
When DJ Nobody drops 5 consecutive unreleased cuts in a row, oftentimes, the songs are completely out of context. They have nothing to do with anything other than the fact that none of them are out yet. Also, what compounds the problem is these cats who are so amped to DJ, that they play the shit for like 2 minutes. I mean, can I get a chance to hear the shit before you isolator/efx box the fuck out of it and before you ride the next song with it for 3 minutes?
Play good songs and get out of their (the songs) way. A little isolator/EQ is great. Maybe even a little more. But I'd like to dance to actual music sometimes instead of just efx, frequency shifts and marathon mixes.

Whoooo hoooo “new treats” junkies on da rise :rofl5:
Luv my classics - would rather it be in my house, in my car, @ work... But preferably not in the club....music is just like life to me, out with the old and in with the new (but never forgetting where you’ve come from to get where you’re going). Ignorance arises when open minds fail to exists......why not be open…why not listen to these new producers who are BUSTING there asses worldwide and embrace the fact that music is not to be stagnant.....Some of these producers are the future of house….. I think a lot of people look @ house as it should ONLY be classics…. I think if you where to ask any of the originals fathers & mothers of house they would have to disagree b/c house was not just classics even back in my mother’s day. So to my fellow YOUTH HOUSE HEADS that plan to carry house into the FUTURE let us not forget the paths that has been paved for us, but never neglect to have an open mind.

at the same time just because the cut is new/unreleased doesn't mean its danceable. . .i'll stick with my jocks who can fluently program the new, recurrents & classics. . .
(Not directed at you Tee, but to folks in general)
It seems from this thread that folks are assuming the dj would just throw track after track of new music without listening to if b4 playing them. Dont most dj's know whether something is a banger when they hear it or do some djs need to hear another dj play it 1st to determine whether it bangs or not? Don't you know when you hear something the 1st time that it's danceable or are classics safe because you know folks have danced to it before?

Like back in the day and even today..... you can hear great music on college radio instead the main stations.......
Futhermore when you do have DJ's that bring the new muzik ....the resident make sure they open the party and play before the crowd get there.....to protect they own vested interest.........
Right..I should risk my night, because dj XYZ plays new treats and fiyahh cuts...wrong!!!
I'm a call you on this one Cee.It's pure bullshit and part of what's wrong with today's dj's.
It don't matter how big you are in one place or on the net....ishould a promoter take a risk and put on a guest dj at prime time and ruin the fuckin nite, cause this cat plays all of the new buttaz?

NO! I would not frequent a a venue with a DJ that plays this way. I've already experienced that and the night is a killer. Killer as in dead.
Regular club go'ers want the tunes they have been waiting to hear in a big venue, where they can DANCE to it, in public. THEY ARE NOT RECORD SHOPPING.....lol.
House music needs more hits. PLAY THE HITS OF THE PAST & PRESENT!!!! House music continues to lack exposure anyways. WTF are some DJ's thinking??!!
This type of shit really makes me want to get back into the clubbing game, so these "unreleased material underground" DJ's can stand & watch me work the crowd just by playing "I Can't Stop" by Plez, followed by a fresh new DJ Gregory joint.

Yeah, I have to agree with you on this man. What dj, that wants to be good and liked by dancers, will intentionally play all unreleased music in a set. Especially since we all know that not everything coming out now days is hot. Unfamiliar maybe another story. Because if it's making me dance I don't care.
I use to think WMC was for unreleased stuff. :acclaim: maybe not.

The era of DJ worship - the 90's
The era of worship me i'm a DJ who uses the internet as a jukebox - the 00's
I don't know about anyone else, but I'm not worshipping the DJ. It's the music I love, but I give "respect" to any DJ that has great taste in selection.
Also, If i'm going to hear a DJ then I already know his reputation and taste. I'm not going to go hear just anyone play.
The point is, there is so much out there. Mix it up old and new, but don't be afraid to play what has never been played. Come out of the dark ages. Be confident in the fact that you have an ear for music and trust your instincts.

been saying this for years. playing music "all night" that will never see the light of day is pointless. playing music that people cannot connect with (familiarity) defeats the purpose, imo.
on another note, having all this new music availbale on the web has caused cats to go into an "ultra" new music frenzy. its like, if you play some shit that's six months old, you're late. i ain't falling for it.

I know if i pay my money i come to dance and i want to hear a combination of old new and in between...a dj needs to watch and master the crowd , if there's an opportunity to play new stuff and the crowd is feelin it do it..i find that having something familiar prior to hittin us with new material helps with the transition.
a dj's purpose is to help make an affair memorable in their selection they should be able to have emotional peaks and valley's .. i want to leave whistling or singing a tune that he/she played that touched one of my senses...i become bored when i go out and hear djs playing nothing but traks (no vox), or the same vox trak that everyone elese is playing and has on their mixed cds...

YES!!!!!! as long as its something that i like. many of my best experiences have come from going to hear dj's that just blowed me away with their song selections even though i was unfamiliar with most of them. this is how i get to know about NEW(to me) music. i actually prefer this than going to hear a dj that plays the same 30 songs that i have been hearing day in and day out for the past year.
Yeah...I mean for me I love to hear different music as long as it sounds good and have a flow and it is mixed well...to me that is how you keep music fresh and keep being inspired. As a dancer and a music lover sometimes I get pissed when the same music is played over and over again by different people. It is like of all the good music that exist not even 1/16 of it is played in the underground scene and forget about mainstream...so this would be a refreshing concept...In fact I wish that was the approach of most DJ's...

no. i'm not a stalker. it's just a guy playing records. if someone does play a bunch of unreleased/white label stuff all night long that would be fine as long as it's GOOD. if it's just crap then who cares if he/she is playing unreleased/white label stuff or commercial stuff. crap is crap and good is good no matter what kind of genre, label, or release it is.

hahahahaha @ the if the music is banging i don't mind comments. i bet most of the yesmen are "deejays. ray is right. farking liars.
search the archives for those "favorite tunes" threads and guess what? 99.9% classics every time all the time.
all this bullshit about classics are dead gotta move on the new shit is what's keeping the scene alive blah blah blah is BULLSHIT!!! to quote depeche mode, "get the balance right".
one of the biggest problems in this scene is the lack of cohesiveness. nobody is really working together to break the ESSENTIAL tunes and KEEP them in ROTATION.
the club is really an extension of radio & club programmers that follow the radio formula will be the most successful. not talking about playing commercial hits. don't front you know what i'm talking about. the big problem is dj's get bored too quickly with their music so to them they gotta "keep it fresh". WHAT_EVERRRRRRRRRRR!!!
boohooohoo. it's a job, you get payed to entertain. sometimes ya gotta play tunes you're tired of hearing. it's a fact of life.
