Clunky or refined
Cassettes.

a time when music was spread due to this form of media, a tape would land a tape would multiply like bacteria. Tapes from the radio  taped LP's mixes compilations, and then copied..
Very inexpensive way of hearing music. It had it moments, speed differnces of different decks, or even the repair part - remember that.
The person that would rewind their tape with a pencil whilst listening to another on a single deck / or to save battery power on the move graemlins/rofl.gif
Some of the names of tapes that people would give you liquid silk boogie baby type of thing. graemlins/rofl.gif
then there's head cleaning
graemlins/lol.gif being able to know your casstte deck well enough to know it's rr / ff speed when you want to hear a specific song. Metal tapes made from metal graemlins/thumbsup.gif They had there good and bad points, some cassttes didn't make it party spillages or caught up in a deck somewhere (poor buggers) some made it and are getting old graciously graemlins/grinyes.gif

Cassette Tape
The Philips Company of the Netherlands invented and released the first compact audio-cassette in 1962. They used high-quality polyester 1/8-inch tape produced by BASF. Recording and playback was at a speed of 1.7/8 inches per second. The next year in the U.S. sales began of the Norelco Carry-Corder dictation machine that used the new cassette tape. The consumer's demand for blank tape used for personal music-recording was unanticipated by Philips.

1969-70 - DuPont and BASF begin offering chromium dioxide recording tapes.

1984 - Sales of recorded compact cassettes (audio cassettes) exceed LP sales for the first time.

aaah tapes...
-they are cooler to give to somebody then a cd, and a lot of people still have walkmans, stereo's with cassette decks, car radios with tapes,...
-when you use your eq, it sounds fatter on a tape then on a cd
-everybody who still has them throw them at your head, cuz they don't use them anymore, so it's cheeaapp
-it's always nice to have tapes laying all around the place (lovely chaos)

I still love the cassette. Now if only they can figure out how to bring back the 8-track tape, then I would be disco dancing all day in my boogie shoes.

Thanks Martin ,

It all started for me with tapes as you said comps , radio mixes I had to go up to this cheap shop in Hackney to get special 2hr cassettes so I could record the whole 2hr mix show . I still collect tapes they still sound fatter and more real and I'm still hunting for more Ron Paizley come wid it ! .

Analogue tape the original party historian ! .

Tapes have never been eclipsed, MD's are up there, but less people have them and as such they will never rival the cassette community..

I went back to the UK and found a load of old tapes, boxes and boxes of em, cranked up my 25 year old all-in-one music center (the record deck is shot, there's feedback on the FM radio, the cassette deck cover is hanging off, you have to hold the pause button down to start with or else it will not play - but when it does, it does and it plays loudly and clearly the music from my youth spanning 20 years / in comparison my CD player in Tokyo is 2 years old looks great, sounds brillant, but it's already skipping and not reading some CD's)

Tapes are robust, chunky and house!

I used to make covers for all my tapes, cutting up magazines and digging out the letraset for the side covers...

Nothing quite beat getting a new tape, playing it in your car in the summertime without a care in the world. I could drive and drive for 90 minutes...and a good tape would make my Fiesta feel like a Porsche 911 smile.gif

I still faithfully listen to and use cassettes....

When making a copy of a CD transfer, put a tape in
between and then send analogue signal to the CD...

It will be a tad warmer.

Better yet....use tape. Don't forget to clean the heads every 10 - 20 hours and de magnetize them every once in a while. Never re wind always go fwd. And the shorter time of tape than the thicker it will be.

Cassettes are better than CDs and DATs for recording house mixes because most house DJs have no concept of how digital headroom works (there isn't any), and can't keep the levels consistent anyway. Just pop in a cassette and tell them to keep it in the red! Many house records sound "better" recorded this way than straight off the vinyl, especially 90s stuff with heavy sampling on crappy samplers.

anyone remember this gem by The Nonce? i used to cane this one way back...

On the bus, rollin to the crib
I would get dibs on the seat with my man OJ
and rock beats from LaMerte, Park to 81st
When I, got home, this was first
I plugged the headphones in, then catch the break
Fourteen with the system, I was like great
on the, turntables, I turned labels
Back and forth then pushed stop on the tape
Then down the street, to 81st, place the kid
with the fat face with the fat case for sale
Ten dollars, if you was known
I put the turntable down for the microphone

I used to sell, mix tapes, but now I'm an MC
I got the rhymes and beats, I used to rock them tapes

Back up at World O' Wheels with the rap contest
I used to try and get mine cuz I thought I was fresh
I liked LL and Shan with my Roxanne rhyme
It might sound wack but it was dope at the time
Then it progressed with styles of the I-Fresh
MC's like Ganjah K and the rest
Post Meter, with the pause mix cut
Rockin Southwest College tearin it up
Money, really wasn't part of the rap
Paid, was havin people start to clap
Gettin ready for the break, your heart starts to race
You was hyped, cuz I could see it on your face
Yes yes, the beat is like fresh
Plus we had the moves, that make the party move
And those were the dues, without makin papes
Damn I should go back, to sellin mix tapes

I used to sell, mix tapes, but now I'm an MC
I got the rhymes and beats, I used to rock them tapes

One to the two, four and eight
Hit the rewind and move and turn the black plate
Get you a tape, watch the crew wreck and
spin the vinyl til it melt and get a phat new casette
across the West y'all
Spin around with the sound and get choice
while the clear voice rock from the ground
Stereo, it's all in the jam
Plus tricks that fixes styles through mixes
If you're soft, beginning to end, you can't win
Let the DJ freak pause then run it again
While you're listening to the hit, it's nice can't you tell
That the two are steady bringin till we swell

I used to sell, mix tapes, but now I'm an MC
I got the rhymes and beats, I used to rock them tapes

peace. ngeso.

There's nothing better than a 120 minute normal bias cassette from TDK, Memorex, and Maxell. The TDK SA-90 series cassettes were the bomb!!! Add a tad bit of treble to a track that you're recording and use Dolby C noise reduction for playback. Clean and crisp reproduction. Screw metal and chrome cassettes, for they sound like crap, too much hiss and the highs are hard to control on these things.

What's a good advantage to mixing with cassettes?

No skipping

On a 120 minute tape, you can record close 15 songs per side.

The only disadvantages are:

The eventual degradation but that depends on the use of the tape. I'm still using cassettes made back in '94 in some of my mixes.

Fast fowarding and rewinding. Big friggin deal!!!

Peace

Groove! I hear you on the SA-90's used to buy by the box on the "grey" market!

Thing I love most about the cassette are you get TWO sides to the story. I used to do different moods on each side.

Tapes were, like for many I presume, the first endeavour I got into as a DJ. I must have sold, or given out 1000's.

Sometimes people I run into will ask me if they can still get a copy of a tape I made years ago....

I'll never forget how hyped I used to get upon finishing a tape and calling up my cousin so we could go test drive it in his Mustangs' boomin' system.....

Buy a CD player that has a record function. I did that, that way you can record everything in analogue, which sounds better to my ears than digital.

Yeah but what if you screw up during your set?

You can waste alot of CDs doing it that way.

I use my computer. I can screw up all I want without wasting any CDs.

I almost got speed kicked by Master Kev l;ast September because I wasted about 4 of his CDs.
