View Full Version : How do you get rid of Indian and Pakistani nuisances

Before people jump on their high horse and start calling me a racist listen.
I've been off work for a couple of days and every morning I get woke up by the phone going with some Pakistani/Indian wankers trying to sell me windows, kitchens, holidays etc. I usually tell them to **** off and hang up but I`m getting more and more of these ****in phone calls.
I`ve heard that there is a web site that you can leave your phone number with and it gets you removed from some of these call lists any ideas ?

I believe a lot of U.K. companies have moved their call centres to India/Pakistan to take advantage of the cheap labour.

cRaiG... a lot of these receive an arduous phonetic training though, making them sound largely indistinguishable to the people in the countries that they field. in other words, my guess is you probably wouldn't have noticed (not straight away anyways) where these people call from. these guys you're talking about don't sound like call center idiots. these guys sound like 'Birdie Nam Nam'.
call centers should be wiped of the face of the earth, BTW.

BTW, out of pure interest: where do you score on Davids political compass? just a question...
where does this tie into deep house music?
would it be any different if a white salesperson had phoned or a black salesperson had phoned. Would you be posting it on a messageboard then? Where abouts in the UK do you live?
oh and is this a wind up?

Anyone that gets me out of bed in the morning - no matter what colour/religion are wankers to me. When you are recieving nearly all these annoying phone calls from India/Pakistan (they tell you where they are calling from) then I`m entitled to call them wankers. It's only recently that I`ve started to get as many of these calls and as I say they originate in India/pakistan.

Go ex-directory.
Assuming you can actually tell, does it matter if they're in India? Should you only be getting calls from within the UK?

Take it from a former telemarketer, cursing at them only gets you more calls....they will pass your number around the room and use you as a comic release when they are stressed out.
What you do is say "He doesn't live here" or "he passed away" or "You have the wrong number" or just a no thanks or an immediate hangup does the job also. When you hangup immediately, you are actually doing the telemarketer a favor because you ar not wasting their time(or yours). What then happens is they immediately rip up your number and move on to the next. I can never understand why and what is the psyche that make folks stay on telephone when they don't want to. To a super closer on the phone, the longer the person stay on the phone, the higher the percentage of a sale.
Hope this helps.

whether this is a wind up or you are serious, here are four options:
a) disconnect your phone (and internet connection)

c) try your hardest to stop acting like a wanker

If you really aren't racist then why even bother mentioning the ethnicity of the people calling you...? The problem isn't that the people are Indian or Pakistani, it is that telemarketers are calling you and you want it to stop. Would you be okay with it if white wankers, or black wankers were calling you?
Your sick, get help.

cRaiG... Bullshit.
If you really wanted information on getting on a UK do not call list, and not to inflame and incite there are a number of non-racially loaded ways you might have asked for that information (and any number of other channels you might more logically have turned to than a US based House Music nessage board). Why did you find it necessary to mention their ethnicity? Why not just rant about telemarketing? If you lived round my way you'd get a fukking kicking if you talked like that in public. But you probably wouldn't want to live in an area where you'd be surrounded by pakis.

Craig I see everyone is on your back again, anyway a great way to stop them from phoning is turn the tables on them, e.g. the coversation may go a little like this.
Q. Good morning sir would you be interested in a fitted Kitchen?
A. I'm afraid I just had one fitted about a month ago. Tell you what though mate, i'm doing a nice line in electric garage doors could I interest you in one of those.
I do this all the time, i've never heard so many people st st stutter before in my life and whats more if you keep the windup going it gonna be costing them money the longer you keep them on the phone.

Matthew I thought the 'wooly jumper'-phrase was just what is was, a funny phrase. I don't know Craig, and he could have asked his questions in a different way, but I do wonder if y'all realize that there is such a thing as being too politically correct.
I wonder if some of you ever saw Eddie Murphy's 'Raw' or other stand-up comedy shows, some of the things in there are way more harsh than Craig's post.

Did anyone actually answer Craigs question?
PESTERED BY CALLS?
Picture the scene: you've just sat down to dinner and the phone and
"Pester You Much double glazing?"
Calls annoy you~ there is a way of stopping them without taking your number out of the Telephone directory
Just phone BT on 0800 398893,
Who will be able to send you a form which will enable you to be registered with the Telephone Preference Service. This company has been set up by the tele-sales companies themselves, as it is in their interest only to phone the people who may be interested in their products. Once registered your number will be barred from companies systems. (although this process does take some time), and eventually you should receive less tele-sales calls. Whilst this will not stop ~all calls of this nature. it will certainly help.
This is only for the UK. Dunno if it works though

Martin the reason I started my post the way I did was because I knew racists like yourself would have judged me to be racist just by the fact I metioned anything about Indian/Pakistan which you are obviously not allowed to do even though that is where these calls are coming from. As I said if it had been calls from Mars I'd been getting then I would have called them martian wankers.

cRaiG... You know cRaiG, I was on your side(well, at least, seeing your point) until you spew this same old rally cry of the KKK ole boy club. The above statement didn't even fit anywhere in your statement of explanation, but yet you felt compelled to pull it out. Anytime I hear this, I cringe, because it's like that cool white guy in college when he gets drunk and riled up, all of a sudden, calling me "nigger" and then apologizing when he sobers up and saying he don't even remember saying it......it's deep within, but it's there, you know what I mean?
My respect for you(what little was there) have now evapporated! </font>Me being KKK I don't think my black friends would be happy to hear you say that agree believe me I have quite a few. All I'm saying is that everyone should be treated as equals nothing else. I feel as if being white you are supposed to be sorry for what went on ****in centuries ago. What horrible shit which I disagree with went on is in the past and nothiung can be done to change it. Some people like to try and drag it up all the time why not get on with life and treat everyone as equals as of now and stop all this being hard done by shit. It's where your at now not where your from.
cRaiG... </font>
quit while you still have some here who believe that bullshit you are spewing....Do you know what the parents of those white racist boys in Howard beach in N.Y said years ago after chasing a black youth and killing him said..."They have Black friends and listen to rap music, they are not racist"...ironic, isn't it? </font>
Is rap music not racist ? Gotta be careful on the DHP[/QB]truth be told, it is offensive. not that we'd do anything about it - we're a people that will continue to deal with shame for generations to come, and German pride will remain pretty much a no-no for a few lifetimes to come.
what's really funny is stuff like this:
a) any time England plays Germany, the Fleet Street front pages are wall-to-wall steel helmets, cans of sauerkraut and references to "Fritz", "Sieg Heil", funny moustaches etc. i have difficulty in understanding, because they won the war - seems like they still haven't realized it though (*);
b) a couple of days ago the home of a very prominent person in politics, society and media was raided successfully for cocaine. everybody in politics, in the papers and on national TV is keeping their mouthes shut, nobody is commenting this development.
why? Michel Friedmann is a controversial talk show host on prime time television. he's also jewish and the vice-chairman of the German Jewish Congress.
so we can't afford to f*ck around with that and burn off our fingers - whether the sh*t is right or wrong is irrelevant. as a nation Germans do not judge the actions of jewish people or Israelis.
progress? nope.
(*) personally i think it has to do with their royals being Germans, Sachsen-Coburg-Gothas to be precise.

Hello, This is AT & T
I was at home the other night in the middle of my dinner when the phone rang.
ME: Hello
AT&T: Hello, this is AT&T...
ME: Is this AT&T?
AT&T: Yes, this AT&T...
ME: This is AT&T?
AT&T: Yes, this is AT&T...
ME: This is AT&T?
AT&T: Yes! This is AT&T, may I speak to Mr. Mancuso, please?
ME: May I ask who is calling?
AT&T: This is AT&T.
ME: Okay, hold on.
At this point I put the phone down for a solid five minutes thinking that surely, this person would have hung up the phone. I ate my salad. Much to my surprise, when I picked up the receiver, they were still waiting.
ME: Hello?
AT&T: Is this Mr. Mancuso?
ME: May I ask who is calling, please?
AT&T: Yes, this is AT&T.
ME: This is AT&T?
AT&T? Yes, this is AT&T.
ME: The phone company?
AT&T: Yes, sir.
ME: I thought you said this was AT&T.
AT&T: Yes sir, we are a phone company.
ME: I already have a phone.
AT&T: We aren't selling phones today, Mr. Mancuso. We would like to offer you 10 cents a minute, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year.
ME: Now, that's 10 cents a minute, 24 hours a day?
AT&T: (getting a little excited at this point by my interest) Yes, sir, that's right! 24 hours a day!
ME: 7 days a week?
AT&T: That's right.
ME: 365 days a year.
AT&T: Yes, sir.
ME: I am definitely interested in that! Wow!!!! That's amazing!
AT&T: We think so!
ME: That's quite a sum of money!
AT&T: Yes, sir, it's amazing how it adds up.
ME: Okay, so will you send me checks weekly, monthly or just one big one at the end of the year for the full $52,560; and if you send an annual check, can I get a cash advance?
AT&T: Excuse me...?
ME: You said you'd give me 10 cents a minute, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. That comes to $144 per day, $1008 per week and $52,560 per year. I'm just interested how you will be making payment.
AT&T: Oh, no, sir. I didn't mean we'd be paying you. You pay us 10 cents per minute.
ME: Wait a minute, how do you figure that by saying you'll give 10 cents a minute, that I'll give you 10 cents a minute? Is this some kind of subliminal telemarketing scheme? I've read about things like things in the Enquirer, you know.
AT&T: No, sir, we are offering 10 cents a minute for...
ME: THERE YOU GO AGAIN! Can I speak to a supervisor please?
AT&T: Sir, I don't think that will be necessary.
ME: I insist on speaking to a supervisor!
AT&T: Yes, Mr. Mancuso. Please hold.
At this point, I began to finish my dinner.
SUPERVISOR: Mr. Mancuso?
ME: Yeth?
SUPERVISOR: I understand you are not quite understanding our 10 cents a minute program.
ME: Is his AT&T?
SUPERVISOR: Yes, sir, it sure is.
I had to swallow before I choked in my food. It was all I could do to suppress my laughter and I had to be careful not to produce a snort.
ME: No, actually, I was just waiting or someone to get back to me so I could sign up for the plan.
SUPERVISOR: Okay, no problem, I'll transfer you back to the person who was helping you.
ME: Thank you.
I was on hold once again and managed a few more mouthfuls. I needed to end this conversation. Suddenly there was an aggravated but polite voice at the other end of the phone.
AT&T: Hello, Mr. Mancuso, I understand you are interested in signing up for our plan.
ME: No, but I was wondering -- do you have that "Friends and Family" thing because I'm an only child and I'd really like to have a little brother...

What does Zeeg hile (sp?) mean </font>
No, man, I'm an American living in Berlin, and my ethnic stereotyping went through two distinct stages. First, I thought, wow, the English and the Germans are actually identical, the original white trash douchebags, but now I'm in phase two, where I think the English are way worse.
Sieg Heil means something like "Hail Victory". </font>
Thanks for the meaning my title will last, the germans are mad cool and we are just jealous you have so much more land and you have the women with the armpit hair, OK sorry no more silly generalisation, intosomethingradio, jazzanova, Truby Trio, Kraftwerk, airships, and thousands more things I can't think of cus it's getting hot in here...

AT&T: click... icon_rofl.gif icon_rofl.gif

Lesson I learned on dhp recently is not to make any statement that implies differences between cultures because that is automatically perceived as prejudice which equates into racism for some odd reason.
Case in point would be the 'alllooksame.com' thread which discussed a website of that name that challenges its visitors to distinguish between the various cultures of the Asian race. One poster on that thread commented that s/he could not tell the Asians featured apart; does that make him/her racist?
This for me illustrates how misunderstood racism and prejudism is, at least in general terms. Racist behaviour, strictly defined, is the attribution of a set of often negatively charged ideals to a particular race. These ideals are often a result of heresay and highly individulised experiences and, when aggregated, produce negative typecasts on that race as a whole. These stereotypical attributes may prevent someone from being hired, receiving a scholarship or being denied admission into an organization. These are the real problems surrounding racism that need to be addressed.
The preceeding was not for nothing. Obviously this is a large problem in the U.S. and to nit pick about jokes and badly delivered nuances undermines the scope of the problem and those who suffer from it as a result.

Obviously this is a large problem in the U.S. and to nit pick about jokes and badly delivered nuances undermines the scope of the problem and those who suffer from it as a result. My counter-arguement is that no other cultures are more openly questioned on the DHP as much as black and latin culture. There is a palpable resistance to any level of humanities that stems from the black and latin American cultures present on the board. Other cultural contributions that stem from non-black and non-latin influences are openly accepted, including a fictious homosexual culture (which is often used to counter the dominance of black culture in the origins of House). Any assertions of black culture are often met with eye-rolling frustration and disdain.
The frequency and lack of depth of these questions and assertions denote a discomfort with black and latin American culture. That no one wishes to consider/admit this leads to much toe-stepping and resultant conflict.
Threads about race and racism always result in multi-page tirades not because of black and latin attitudes torward racism, but the racism of those who would disallow a black and latin cultural voice. Maybe the non-black and non-latin members of the DHP should stop asserting that we should all just "come off it".
Why aren't blacks allowed acceptance and empathy until we debate you for it?

I don't think that true of everyone here, yes in mill towns this is symptomatic, that is an issue in those places, because the influx of cheap labour to the textile industry. The textile industry does not exist anymore (by comparison), this breeds hatred, because jobs etc are now scarce in those parts, see Oldham & Burnley. People need a scapegoat, the Asian communities suffer this, as they are the easiest to point the finger at. Something needs to be done about this, as the BNP see it as a perfect opportunity to stoke the fire.
Your blanket racist comment is a nonsense.
It does apply, maybe where you live, but not in my house, nor that of many others.

the brits are aware of indian culture, and of the difference between indian, pakistani and bangladeshi. of course! they are the ones who divided us up.

I think Indians have a better image over here because many of them are professionals, and we just don't have the numbers like in the UK, ratio wise anyway. It is true though most Americans don't know the difference between an Arab and an Indian, let alone a Gujurati and a Tamilian. I used to live in this small town when I was a kid and they used to call me nigger and beat me up, and I'm Indian!

But, in comparison to how much Indians and Pakistani's hate each other it is minimal, there has been many murders here Asian on Asian (Asian being the OK term in the UK for Indians and Pakistanis).
The Irish and Caribbean people came here to work in the 1950's in mass
The Asian people came in mass in the 1960's
The Asian people took the racist spotlight off the Blackman, more so off the Irish.
Now here in the UK, your just as likely to here an Asian guy slating off a Somalian or a Kosovan as a white or black guy slating Asians, and that the size of it, most people seem to hate on someone including the Asians. I have gone into this at great length, Sikhs calling Muslims choppers. Muslims putting down anyone one that isn't Muslim, Men being sexist to women, Nigerians that don't like Jamaicans, Kashmiri people who hate on Pakistanis who hate on Indians. It's a mad time here, but the only thing that makes it OK is there off pockets of people who really don't give a **** who you are as long as your a decent person.
Your right there is a lot of hate, and a lot of white people don't want Asian neighbours. Then there are people like my parents that are happier with Indians living next door as they are polite, friendly and cleaner that the white people who lived there before, that's the feel good part about the UK, when you see pockets of decency.
It's that see saw effect I often speak about. When robbed by a black man or an Asian or a white guy, that they are just men, not black white or Asian, the colour doesn't rob you the man does. When my friend was held up and beaten in Spark hill Park in Birmingham UK and called a white bastard while he was held and roundhoused in the face, you can't afford to get a chip, I was broken into in broad daylight by two Asians, can't get a chip, my dad has had two friends who are over 65 robbed and beaten for fun, can't get a knot in your stomach. When you friend who is black is pulled over by The Police when he hasn't been drinking and the car in front in swerving over the road, doesn't get a chip over it. When murder rate goes up due to revenge killings allowed in other countries happen, can't get a chip, when a Jamaican guy in a garage threatens to shoot the driver of the taxi your in and the Taxi driver says come on I'm in the Taliban and I’ll blow your ****ing head off with a cannon graemlins/rofl.gif - remain calm. When you hear an Englishman being ignorant to Asians, Americans not liking the British - don't get a chip. When an Asian guy is being racist about the Irish, don't get a chip. When you hear Africans don't get on with Chinese people - don't get a chip...............................this list is endless in the U.K
We just have to get on 60 million on a small Island, people are everywhere and they all have the same traits good and bad whether you like it or not.
The Asians here know have TV shows Radio stations clothing comapnies......................................... ............... I would worry about the UK Asian too much, why? Because as they took the heat of Caribbean and Irish people, they are too forcing the spotlight away via the Somalians and other fairly new immigrants, now the Somalian is probably going to have to wait till another war resulting in more immigrants so the Somalian can move up to the social standing the Asians have reached here now.
All the best to you.

lol @ this shit!!
I come from Scotland and i am surrounded by pakistani's and indians.I think there is certain individual's who just dont like people coming from other countries to the Uk.This is not a British thingbut a worldwide problem.I would not say that every English person hates Asian people .To say that is insane.Infact the person who you are all talking about who made the statement is Scottish and there is as many ignorant Scottish people as there is English. Some of the staements above about all English people robbing India is just bull.s.t
If everyone was to think like that then every Scottish person would hate the English. The English raped, killed, tortured Scottish people centurys ago but i dont hate them all.Just like i dont hate Germans for what they did during the war. Some guy made a off the cuff statement aout a certain race of people and he probably wishes he hadnt said it.
I hear this shit all the time about people hating people of a certain colour or of a certain religion. The fact is if more people startedsocialising with each other and stopped talking s..t then maybe the understanding of these thing would become more clear.
Anyway im going to my local indian restraunt for a curry tonight and i wont be hating on any of them.Infact a few of the people who work their are friends with my family.Infact one of them actually phoned last week when my father was unwell to see how he was.
So mush for all Brits hating indians.. graemlins/sleep2.gif

</font>
spoken like a true BOLD SOUL!!!

The British Asian community has been by far the most successful economically of all the races that migrated to Britain during the 50s, 60s and 70s. Many of my friends are second generation Asians...lawyers, doctors, journalists, business men...that's male and female too. Go to any British university - a quarter of your class might be Asian. The number of Asians in higher education as a proportion of their population is far higher than whites and blacks.
Agreed, there are many problems with race in England and Britain has a shameful past when it comes to 'The Empire'.
But your statement that all white English people hate Indians and Pakistanis is just plain wrong. Relations between the two communities are on the whole very good and have developed in a positive direction over the last 30 years or so. There are still problems and still poverty, but things have improved. Yes, there are lots of people who still think 'the Pakis' should be sent home - but that's a tiny minority. Yes, there are still pockets of inner city Britain where race relations are poor and yes, there are thousands of Asian families living in poor housing...however, on the whole they are now the minority. There are just as many whites and blacks living in poverty.
I lived in an asian community for a number of years (white boy was in the minority where I lived) and I spent some of my childhood living in a town not too far from Bradford (huge Asian community), my best mate at Uni was Indian and an ex girlfriend was Indian too...I just don't recognise the statement that 'most' white people in England hate Asians.
Anyway, that's my two cents.

I'll paraphrase from an older post of mine:
Those who identify with the notion of "white" should realize that their conditioning as whites may not accommodate an awareness of the issues many people who identify with the notion of "color" face.
That something doesn't make sense to them doesn't make it a crack-pot conspiracy theory or "blame placing". There is simply a failure to relate.
Finally, it is my view that as those who identify with the notion of "white" are clearly the dominant political, social and economic force in human society, this dominance carries with it a responsibility to help the other cultures of the human organism arrive at the same par of plenty and opportunity. This is overdue.

And that'll continue for as long as black dance music is called 'house', since that term's been adapted to any form of fast paced music designed to make people dance.
I predict the same thing that happened to rock and roll will happen to house. My dad used to refer to rock and roll as black music, but he's from the old school. No one refers to it in that context anymore.

I'm phoned by Scottish Headhunters all the time - I usually cut them out in their opening pitch by stating that unless the salary offered on the job they are pitching has 6 zeros in it then they should hang up now and save their phone bill - works everytime :D
Am I wrong or is this a nasty-assed post..
I think my Pakistani & Indian colleague would say, Pang Chud Harami, or maybe even, Mira Lang Chous, in response to it ;)

One weekend away from the DHP and we've moved no further than an asthmatic ant with some heavy shopping...
For what it's worth, I think DHP-race-related discussions have one big common problem: 99% of the people taking part in it are not racist, so they have a very hard time acknowledging the different blames made towards their race, simply because they are not like that, so they start defending themselves, which is a logical reaction imo.
Being white and reading posts where white people are blamed this or that and knowing that I am not like that leads to defending myself as an individual and is sometimes mistaken as a defence for all white people.
People who are not racist and have not really experienced it (and yes, that'll be mostly white people) have trouble understanding racism and thus make comments that seem ignorant to people who do understand or have experienced racism.
Being on the DHP for some years now has given me much more insight into all this, but I will never fully understand it, but what some of the 'hotheads' in here need to understand is that most of the people on the DHP (all colours) are not racist and do not want to associated with people who are just because they have the same skin colour.
I hope I'm making some sense.

I would like to take two minutes to Thanks G-Man for banning this sorry and sad individual. There is no doubt that this man is a racist and do not even deserve to be in this industry. Please read the title of this thread again :
How do you get rid of Indian and Pakistani nuisances? .
The title of his thread is just stating his real question/issue. It has nothing to do with telemarketers. You don't talk about your fellow human beings that way. The term "Nuisance" is used for rodents, roaches and pest in general.
G-man should have a tolerance zero policy when it comes to that type of individual. No warnings.

Some people have written sentences in the past which were offensive but were entirely due to them not having the same level of English as the majority of people here. RD you are making lots of sense, my dear sweetie...though whenever i hear of black women (which i happen to be) being called negative terms or talked about in negative ways, i MUST gather all of the info of the source of this negativity to see if any of "it" is true...what i usually come up with is this: (1) not ALL of any group acts the same...(2) most folk like to generalize for emphasis - THEN once i get past that, i notice: (3) gee, the comments sound familiar and is it because of stereotype perpetuation or actual experience?...(4) the comment may ring true in my life, so, with my analytical self, let me break it down and see why these negative phenomena happen...
if i find it to be bullshit, what's said about black women, then i express it...but if i find that there is SOME truth, even though i don't represent it, then i may throw the comment my support in an effort to understand why the negativity exists...
just because i'm a black woman does not mean i must deny the "charges" for every black woman or else i'd be generalizing just the same...
and please remember this: there are many, many GROWN folk on this board who regularly practice discernment and can distiguish between bs and true dat so that the true essense of a post becomes obvious...so, defending your entire "race" is not necessary, however, you really don't have to defend yourself for your light beams brightly across these fibre optics...

An interesting and positive article to close this thread ? (and it's music related graemlins/cheering.gif )
By John Shearlaw
HIDING IN THE LIMELIGHT
As a double act, Nitin Sawhney takes some beating. The handsome, assured and sublimely talented composer is poised to grab the laurels as the British Asian music scene's first true crossover star - yet until now the majority of those who recognise his name will only have heard him on Radio 4.
With his one-time flatmate Sanjeev Bhaskar, Sawhney helped to propel the hugely popular Goodness Gracious Me from the fringe theatre to Radio 4, and then to the brink of its first, highly acclaimed television series. As a musician, he has been treading the same ground-breaking cross-cultural path, harnessing a range of collaborators to his own extraordinary vision - from Indian classical singers to Brazilian percussionists, from tabla masters playing drum and bass to a string quartet playing Kathakali rhythms. His album Beyond Skin was one of the most rewarding delights of 1999, and in 2000 was recognised as such, when Sawhney picked up the prestigious South Bank Award for Popular Music from Bob Geldof, beating fellow nominees Blur and Fatboy Slim.
Full of adventurous rhythms and ideas, and a lifetime of influences, at its soulful heart Beyond Skin is one man's attempt to express the British Asian experience, and it has proved a more than valid reason for its creator to step aside from a comedy show that was about to hit the headlines.
A consummate collaborator, Sawhney has spent the past decade earning the loyalty and support of some of the world's leading musicians and vocalists. Some, such as the world-class tabla player and singer Jayanta Bose, come from the Indian classical tradition, while others, including Yemeni singer Natacha Atlas and the Brazilian Sanchita Farruque, had their unpredictable talents harnessed for the first time by Sawhney.
Together, on stage or in the studio, these loyal allies become the co-creators of extraordinary music, extending their virtuoso boundaries to embrace what Sawhney terms the "raag". "It's an Indian concept, a musical form," he explains. "It exists in the air, it is all around us. The person holding the raag has no importance - they are simply there to supply the concept. To me, that's the most interesting way to capture the experience."
Add to this impressive output the dozens of advertisements and film scores, a collaboration with Sir Paul McCartney (on his Fireman project), seemingly endless production and remix credits, and a series of challenging live performances in London, Australia and South Africa, and a remarkable picture begins to take shape. Nitin Sawhney isn't just emerging into the limelight. He's been there, almost unnoticed, all along.
"I've been doing it for so long, I'd assumed until recently I was doing it to get famous," he says. "And the really weird thing is that nearly everybody I know is famous." Indeed, long before Sir Paul dug out his A-Z, the list of visitors to Sawhney's south London home, complete with bedroom studio, made impressive reading: Sinead O'Connor; members of Bristol trip-hop collective Massive Attack; Brian Eno; director John Schlesinger; film-score composer Michael Nyman ("though we actually met at the Groucho"), then the former Beatle himself.
"My house is quite studenty. I've always shared with people," Sawhney says (although before he reveals his past influences, you would be hard pushed to guess his age - he is 35). "And suddenly it was like, clear the cups, where's the sugar. It's him, it's really him. People were peeking out from behind the cupboards, total panic." McCartney innocently mistook Sawhney's publicist, then staying at the house, for his wife. "Sorry, wrong bedroom," she laughed.
But despite all the attention, he still has mixed feelings about fame. "I could really only handle it by sending it up," he says. "I didn't want to be known. I don't believe in causes, I'm not a leader or spokesperson. For a long time, my music has been about individuality, a slow search for expression. I haven't got this far to be pushed into a category and forgotten about."
For this multi-talented artist, whose quick-fire conversational references include Jung, Keats, his own take on cultural imperialism and his parents' thoughts on immigration (they both have a voice on Beyond Skin), the past 10 years have, in essence, been a battle for expression. Only now is his heart worn on his sleeve notes: "My identity and my history are defined only by myself - beyond politics, beyond nationality, beyond religion and beyond skin." Which, as he points out, is a very long way indeed beyond the media's ready acceptance of a quick blast of Bollywood and tablas.
"For someone who is against all forms of judgmentalism and elitism, to be suddenly handed an award is odd," he says. "If it's someone's being nice, and it's part of making music more accessible, then it's no bad thing. Then again, it's hang on - who am I? What is my thinking here? If I started off saying, 'Let's change all the stereotyping about British Asian music’, it follows that I'm going to be doubly wary about a bit of recognition."
Sawhney was brought up by first-generation British Indians who settled in Kent - "I was a Hindu made to read the Bible, which I'm glad of now in a way." Trained in classical piano, and later in flamenco guitar, music was always the first line of escape. "I was picked on, beaten and abused, simply because I was on my own and a different colour." At university, Sawhney first played on stage with the highly-rated James Taylor Quartet, fledgling jazz funksters some years ahead of their time. Right from the outset, he developed important friendships "partly to survive, partly because that's what I value most" (the Taylor connection goes back to his schooldays).
For a short time, he teamed up with Talvin Singh in the Tihai Trio - "sort of John McLaughlin-influenced stuff, we were the IndoJazz Warriors." The group, and later the friendship, ran its course. Now the barriers were not those of a kid facing racist abuse (although it was still there), but of an adult musician facing a more subtle form of prejudice, a prejudice that riles him still. "Fusion this and fusion that, Asian Underground. More labels. Yes, I did have a problem with it. When I started out, I'd ring up a record company and they'd say, 'sorry, mate, we don't do bhangra'. Another clichéd term, short for next year's boring, marginalised crap. The whole thing was about reducing culture to fashion. I remember winning an award a few years later, a Best Producer in the Ethnic Minority Media award. I found it really offensive."
A search for an outlet beyond easily defined categories informed Sawhney's first solo album, Spirit Dance, then Migration, which launched the Outcaste record label in 1995. "It was a time of finding out about who we were and creating a fresh outlook for ourselves," he says. The nucleus of Sawhney's performing ensemble, now joined by rapper JC001, was already gelling; his other work subsidised (as it still does) the increasingly intricate live shows.
At the same time, alongside close friend Sanjeev Bhaskar, he started a comedy revue, The Secret Asians. "It was the most, most exciting of times, really - just him and me, getting the chance to look at social issues and change a few perspectives. I was happy being up there, because I didn't see myself as a comedian. I was a musician, a producer, anything but the front man. And it was fantastic, seeing the whole thing take off. I am a product of that whole TV culture of the 70s, all that lazy comedy like It Ain't Half Hot Mum, light-hearted but dangerous. Stuff that made racism acceptable socially and created an imbalance. We were reacting to that - but on our terms.
"Even now I get white geezers, like taxi drivers, the sort who would be comfortable with using the word 'Paki', telling me how much they relate to Let's Go Out For An English [a sketch from Goodness Gracious Me]. It got to them, and it has definitely changed things."
His involvement in the project lasted right up to the filming of the first series. "My lawyer was asking me if it was going to be commercial. And I'm saying, 'huge, mainstream culture', and at the same time thinking: I don't want this, I'm a musician, not a comedian. But do I still do the Bhangra Muffins?"
With all Sawhney's energies transferred back to the recording studio, Beyond Skin became the focus of his questions and doubts. "As a British Asian, you're always going to be asking: is it our context that's shifting - or theirs? I'm now at a stage where I don't associate with nationality. The influences are there, because that's what I grew up with. But changing the goalposts of perception - is that relevant now? Shouldn't we, as people, be getting beyond all that shit?"
Sticking to the same close-knit but outward-reaching circle of friends and performers, he has slowly built a receptive audience ready to accept the many facets of his output. There have been memorable concerts as far afield as Montreux, Turkey and Australia. The South Africa, Glastonbury ("the first time it really, really rained") and the Victoria & Albert Museum in London, just as they were mounting the Arts of the Sikh Kingdom exhibition. Next came a sell-out showcase at a London rock venue where Sawhney, the largely silent leader of the ensemble, was moved by the varied audience - and several levels of appreciation. "It was emotionally draining, so much so that I had to take a cab straight home," he says. "Yet, in many ways, it was us moving up a gear, people cheering and responding to different areas of my work. We really have reached something we can build on."
Thanks to Bob Geldof and the taste arbiters behind the South Bank Awards, Nitin Sawhney's profile took one more small step into the mainstream. For the man behind the mask - composer, collaborator, and creative force - that's where he always thought he's been anyway.

Could be agitator
I reckon an agitator is more planned than a hothead, hothead’s release
An agitator is more likely to be sitting in the wings poking with a stick every now and again and the hotheads probably on stage
