Given the exorbitant prices that these joints are going for on and off eBay, what are the reasons why Kenny & Theo aren't repressing at least one more batch of each of volume 1 and volume 2? they were limited to begin with and at this point, it's not like they haven't achieved notoriety already.
Tja, taht is teh question.
Peace.

seriously - they can definitely cash in on the overwhelming demand. would a reason for them to be doing so is in the hopes of creating demand for their subsequent releases? after finding decent soundclips of the 3 chairs EPs 1 & 2, i can understand why people are willing to pay that much for them. and yes, i'm late as hell on them.
.... that, and what was the reason why U Can Dance if U Want 2 won't ever be repressed? was it something about a sample? re-release it with a different sample but use the same instrumentation.

That would be nice questions for an interview with the Moodymann - if he gave any.
I haven't manage to get behind their re-release policy, yet. The sample thing is one of the theories, but I don't think that this fits, because some of the other smaple cuts gets re-releases. At the end of the day the whole stuff is based on samples. I just think its random and out of fun.
But the Three Chairs stuff has been pressed a few times.
Peace.

there were a couple of sound signature releases repressed just last week i think.
3 chairs 1 was repressed last year.
and i found 3 chairs 2 in a bargain bin not too long ago. should not be that hard to find, i'll keep an eye out for another copy if you like.
about the 'u can dance if u 1 2', i wouldn't be surprised if it is a sampling issue. the record samples prince 'all the crickets love you in ny' perhaps warner bros or prince are a bit more active in trying to avoid the use of samples then other labels/artists...

Gerd i'm sure that there are many other labels and producers that would love to be in that position.

I'm looking for a copy of the 'Low Key' edits if anyone has a spare they may be willing to trade I would be prepared to let go a copy of one of my Black Cock or KDJ rarities.
What are the "Low Key" edits?
Peace.

Kenny, Theo and the rest never seem to want to 'cash in' like pop-stars. They also don't press up many copies of their records, which is like most other Detroit artists. This doesn't seem strange to me at all...

Gerd a white label similar to Theo's Ugly Edits.
one side is MoodyMan, the other is Theo.
Theo's side is a really sloppy edit done live
mixing doubles of Peaches and Prunes.
the other side is pretty cool except the pressing is
absolutely horrible.
i bought it for $10.00 when it was released and sold it
for about $105.00.
my advice to you is save your money.
get someone to burn a copy for you on to cd.

This doesn't seem strange to me at all... it's not really the question about "cashing" in so to speak, especially since the numbers really wouldn't be that phenomenal, with a rough guestimate of prolly a couple thousand across the globe that would be interested in additional pressings. this is all premised on the assumption that they wouldn't lose out if they did represses, or released stuff on a not-so-exclusive basis. again, i could be definitely wrong about that. Kenny and Theo make good music, and I'm sure they are well aware of that. however, if we are to take the economic dimension out of the equation, does it make sense to only do limited releases, especially when they know that specific products still have such a demand? why do they want to keep the numbers down then? that exclusivity is the same thing that was really killing the drum and bass scene in the UK. well, that's a bit of an extreme case, but still, this stuff should be shared and distributed.
my cynical thoughts are that their motivations may include the desire to build in a level of hype for all their releases, with the potential that each one will appreciate in value due to its limited availabilty and to the possibility that people will think that it was "slept on" to thereby help promote sales and thus reduce the returns coming back from the distributors. if that was the case, that's a bit disingenuous, but i'm also sure that if it is an operating motivation, they aren't the only ones employing it.
i maybe taking this a bit too far, but if you want to keep people interested in the stuff, they have to be able to access it. it really goes back to the fan base. these guys aren't long dead and gone or by any means inactive. they are kicking it and still churning out work on a semi-frequent basis.
