There was a great outdoor Botero sculpture exhibit in Grant Park in Chicago in 1995 - bronze figures that were larger than life size. I thought it was incredible.

there is an excellent exhibition of Romare Bearden's works at the National Gallery of Art, first time for a brother, it has also inspired numerous exhibitions around the city of his contemporaries and those he influenced. a couple of years ago the Phillips Collection featured Jacob Lawrence, Lawrence and Bearden two giants

His stuff is really affordable for what you are getting and will be extremely valuable in time. I have several pieces of his and absolutely LOVE them. He is also pretty accessible as he lives and works in SOHO. I've hung out with him at his studio a few times. Really awesome personality. Some of you might remember the album covers he did for the TOM TOM CLUB.

Thanks for this Raven.

One guy who came to my attention during a drunken evening at a venue in Melbourne Australia called Revolver is ...

PERKS...

Misha Hollenbach is a designer, artist and curator with a background in graffiti art. He has held solo exhibitions in Melbourne, Paris, Seattle, Sydney and Tokyo, and has taken part in numerous group exhibitions in Europe, America, Asia and Australia, usually outside the contemporary arts circuit. His exhibitions are installed within a total concept environment. His design clients include Stussy, Mambo, Mooks, Fuct and Jazz Fudge Records (UK). With Shauna Toohey, he founded PAM, a company designing, manufacturing and retailing street-wear with a twist. He is an avid collector of Japanese toys.

jurren you are most welcome!
I too am intrigued by Calder's work

FYI:

Alexander Calder (1898-1976)

Alexander Calder was born on July 22, 1898, in Lawnton, Pennsylvania, into a family of artists. In 1919 he received an engineering degree from Stevens Institute of technology in Hoboken, New Jersey. Calder attended the Art Students League in New York from 1923 to 1926, studying briefly with Thomas Hart Benton, John Sloan, among others.

As a freelance artist for the National Police Gazette in 1925 he spent two weeks sketching at the circus; his fascination with the subject dates from this time. He also made his first sculpture in 1925; the following year he made several constructions of animals and figures with wire and wood. Calder’s first exhibition of paintings took place in 1926 at the Artist’s Gallery in New York.

Later that year he went to Paris and attended the Académie de la Grand Chaumière. In Paris he met Stanley William Hayter, exhibited at the 1926 Salon des Indépendants and in 1927 began giving performances of his miniature circus. The first show of his wire animals and caricature portraits was held at the Weyhe Gallery, New York, in 1928. That same year he metJoan Miró, who became his lifelong friend. Subsequently Calder divided his time between France and the United States. In 1929 the Galerie Billiet gave him his first solo show in Paris. He met Fernand Léger, Frederick Kiesler, and Theo van Doesburg and visited Mondrian’s studio in 1930.

Calder began to experiment with abstract sculpture at this time and in 1931 and 1932 introduced moving parts into his work. These moving sculptures were called mobiles; the stationary constructions were to be named stabiles. He exhibited with the Abstraction-Création group in Paris in 1933. In 1943 the Museum of Modern Art in New York gave him a major solo exhibition.

During the 1950s Calder traveled widely and executed Towers (wall mobiles) and Gongs (sound mobiles). He won First Prize for Sculpture at the 1952 Venice Biennale. Late in the decade the artist worked extensively with gouache; from this period he executed numerous major public commissions. In 1964-5 the Solomon R Guggenheim Museum presented a major Calder retrospective. He began the Totems and the Animobiles, variations on the standing mobile, in 1966 and 1971, respectively. An important Calder exhibition was held at the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York in 1976. Calder died I New York on November 11, 1976.

FAB FIVE FREDDY

His most famous subway painting done in 1979 with LEE Quinones was a tribute to Andy Warhol's Campbels' Soup cans. His work gained attention of art dealers as well as aerosol artists. His paintings have been displayed world wide with the likes of Keith Haring, Lee Quinones and Jean Michele Basquiat.

He became well known for his efforts in introducing America and the world to Hip Hop Culture. He utilized his connections both in the media and on the street to help the expansion of Hip Hop.

HAZE

Though HAZE experienced success in the gallery scene along side the likes of KENNY SCHARF, KEITH HARING and others he opted for something for which he held more passion; graphic design. HAZE became one of the most successful Hip Hop art directors in the world. When Hip Hop commercial identity was in it's infancy, he created imagery and direction for top artists. He counts among his accomplishments, the logos for Tommy Boy Records, Cold Chillin and EPMD in addition to LP sleeves for Public Enemy, The Beastie Boys, LL Cool J and others.

ANNIE LIEBOVITZ
Keith Haring

"I guess the most remarkable thing about working closely with Annie was that although she primarily photographs the most influential people in the world, she would put as much energy and passion into photographing her best friends' children as she would the President. For her, it was always the importance of the photograph as much or more than the importance of the person. She would research, study and brainstorm about her pictures tirelessly. She works harder than everyone else. That's why her pictures are better than anyone else's." - Andrew Eccles

JUSTIN BUAs
The Jointz
Hand Painted Kicks

For the last ten years artist Justin BUA has been making a mark in the art world with his urban flavored paintings. His combination of graffiti-esque style, distorted realism and urban themes has made his paintings some of the most popular art among young people today. The biggest markets for his work are the college campuses in America and Canada, where he is a best seller. BUA has an energetic and vocal fan base that ranges from high school skateboarders and college students across the globe to Hollywood actors like Robert De Niro and Christina Ricci.

rob Don't personally know the guy, but he is from the Bay Area. I'll call around tonight and see if I can come up with something for you tomorrow. Twist is dope. You should see him in action. He puts his stuff up with the swiftness.

"san francisco - one day will be my home" They've been closed due to remodeling (sheeeit since last year). Are you interested in those particular pieces? I know the owner, but I can tell you that most likely he'll be keeping the pieces himself. He was actually going to be one of the people I was going to call for you. Were you here when Suicide City was up? (parking lot on Market st. that was also a legal spot for writers to get down).

he has two names by the way, barry mcgee and 'twist', his alterego graffiti name

In 1966, Barry McGee was born to a San Francisco family "where everyone drew." In the mid-1980s he took his drawings into the streets using the tag, "Twist." He received a BFA in painting and printmaking in 1991 from the San Francisco Art Institute. McGee has exhibited at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, San Francisco; the Museu Lesar Segall, Sao Paulo; the Drawing Center, New York; the Walker Art Center, Minneapolis; and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art.

if this is the same guy

CHRISTO
Running Fence, 1976

This picture shows one end of Christo's Running Fence, an enormous sculpture erected for two weeks in September 1976, in Sonoma and Marin Counties in California. The work, which used some 2.5 million square feet of nylon cloth, was a 18-foot tall fabric wall extending for nearly 25 miles. This is an example of conceptual art: works in which the artist's creative work and conception are intended to be as much part of the work as the finished product. Like most conceptual works, Running Fence was designed to be ephemeral, and was erected for only a short time before being disassembled.

TYREE GUYTON

In what many people consider trash, Detroit artist Tyree Guyton finds beauty. For more than 12 years, Guyton has transformed Heidelberg Street into a work of art with only his paint brush and found objects such as broken toys and old household items. The Project was initiated not only to promote a positive image for the city of Detroit, but also to educate the community about the power of creativity and awareness to heal and unify. The street is lined with Guyton's colorful sculptures and paintings; thousands of shoes line the sidewalk, bicycles, clocks and dolls swirl through the trees, numbers, polka-dots and images from the media and popular culture adorn the houses, and Guyton's symbolic face paintings smile from car hoods and surfaces everywhere. The controversial Project embodies a dynamic objective, redefining ideas of community, breaking boundaries and challenging conventional practices in the art world. The Project is currently the third most visited tourist attraction in Detroit. Still, three of the Heidelberg houses were demolished in 1991, destroying more than $250,000 of Guyton's studio artwork. At the Wayne County Circuit Court House tomorrow at 2 p.m., the city of Detroit will make its final verdict whether to tear down the project for good, or allow the art and the spirit to continue on. If the Heidelberg is destroyed, Guyton has big plans for his next project. "It's time for a revolution," he says. An exhibition of Guyton's recent works is currently on display at the new C-Pop Gallery, located at 1529 Broadway Ave. in Detroit. For more information about the .Heidelberg project, call (313) 537-8037 or visit the Website at www.heidelberg.org (http://www.heidelberg.org)

Awww man you two beat me to it. I was about to start a thread asking Linda to share more on the painting. I've heard of Lawn jockeys but don't really know if this is what the painting refers to and what the term means. Okay ... I'm kind of assuming this is what it means seeing as there's a lawn in the painting ... er ... LIIINNNNDDDDAAAAA!

Ahem, she really does deserve another thread to answer the question. Page whatever this is is just too far back. ;)
