First off, im having major problems with my midi controllers being "recognized" is it just me or should i not have to unplug and replug and switch around the ports that i have my controllers plugged into - just to get them to be recognized ...???

My Akai MPD24 was always working in cubase sx3 before i moved my setup to a diff room and now its the remote sl 61 that is the one that is not showing up half the time..

very frustrating!!!!!!!!!!! this shits supposed 2 just work if its plugged in if u ask me:)

Seriously does PROTOOLS or LOGIC have these types of problems recognizing MIDI CONTROLLERS?

i bet macs dont have as much issues with this, its always been a bit buggy ie: having to unplug and plug back in midi controlers to get them to be recognized but this is ridiculous man, I have 3 midi controllers

1: remote sl 61
2: akai mpd24
3: evolution mk-225c

between the 3 u think i could get at least one ofthem to STAY RECOGNIZED
without having to plug/unplug

im using cubase sx3 rewired into reason 4

i also have an Akai MPD24 and a midi keyboard never get any problems on my set up

you have to make sure that your controller is on before starting cubase other than that no problems

ok after an agonizing night ive realized that if u have WEBCAM DRIVERS INSTALLED this will FOR SOME REASON Stop the AKAI MPD24 from working
AT ALL

VERY STUPID! + strange
i luckily found some other thread that someone posted on another board
to indicate this.. and sure enuff removing these drivers and rebooting eliminated the problem and the piece is functioning once again. thank god..

ONWARD + UPWARD:)

Buy a mac. I produced music on windows for a couple of years, using logic and later Sonar. Seems like there was always some problem or another. It got pretty frustrating. Nothing kills moral like debugging a PC problem when you feel the urge to create music. Eventually, I said fuck it, kicked down the $$$$ for a G5, and it's been one of the best investment I've made as far as my production goes. I am all OS X, work and play.

Someone once told me that "with windows, you show what you know. On Mac, you show what you can do."

Is this thread about Cubase SX3 users?

I have been using SX3 for about 2-3 years now and I love it.

I must admit after going to Remix Hotel and getting to see what cubase 4 can do and the added Yamaha motif ES vst I'll be leaving this platform after I come back from Miami.

Don't get it twisted SX3 is amazing but cubase 4 is outta control!!!

Happy producing.

im on sx3 on a pc for years now and realy never got
any issues with the daw or the comp .... except
the normal issues that come with time and components getting
old ... some harddrives die or other stuff like that, but thats normal,
i guess:acclaim:

i love my pc and the old pc vs. mac debatte is out of question
since apple goes intel ... so its basically a pc with a different os
in a beautifull case

I use Cubase SX 3. Going to upgrade to Cubase 4 after I pick up my Rosetta 200.

C4 really looks nice and the most recent update finally added native side chaining without having to do a workaround.

I use Cubase 4. It took a lot of playing with to get it to recognize my midi controler. But, once it saw it I haven't had any problems. Oh, I'm on a PC too.

I use SX3, usually rewired with Reason or FLStudio.

I love this program. I've been using it for about a year now, and i'm gonna wait until I really "master" it to upgrade to Cubase 4.

ok check it.. is there not a way to apply simple wet/dry level to any effect in cubase sx3?? ie: i load up my proteus 2000, select a nice patch, add a reverb, and i want to be able to only apply a touch of a reverb .. not the entire effect.. if i had a mixing board i could use effect send knob right? but i dont.. so do i need to buy a board and use my external effects units or is there a way for me to select and apply a percentage of the ffect to my instrument??????????????????? i dont see any effect send or wet/dry in the cubase mixer that i control via my remote sl

I get the feeling your just putting the effect as an insert.

What you have to do is go to Project --> Add Track --> FX Channel, then load the effect you want in the "plugin" area, go back to your original track and you should see "sends" on the lefthand side where it has the track info. Click on that, then go to the blank spot in "s1" and you can now select your send FX from the list there.

yeah, of course man... what do you think this is, fruityloops or something? (even in FL you can control that though I think).

You can change it by adjusting that bar right under(or over?) the effect in the send list, although you probably figured that out by now.

One question is does anybody know how to mix midi volumes using the mixer? It never seems to work for midi devices.

I have a question

may be a dumb one LOL

can i apply different quantize settings to different midi tracks

i.e 30% swing on the hats and 20% on snares or once the quantize is set up does it apply to all the lanes?

Not sure if I'm fully understanding your question, but if you want to automate the volume (raise or lower it or even automate any other effect for a midi channel), here's how:

There's a folder called "VST Instruments" - open the folder (as I'm sure you know) by clicking on the "+" symbol. All the VST's you're using for that session should have their own folder within the "VST Instruments" folder. Find the VST you want to automate and (again) click on the "+" symbol. Assuming you're familiar with automation, just click on "R" and write. :)

Depends. If you're using something like Battery and assign groups of percussion out to different midi channels, then you could quantize each channel differently. But say you just use one channel, then no, I don't believe you can quantize one and not the other.

Anyway, here's how:

You know how there are two different "insert" options all the way to the left of the screen? One for the midi track and one for the VST you're using? OK, well using the insert in the above box (not the one for your VST, which is below), choose "Quantizer". That's pretty much it. Now just set as desired and you're done.

Brilliant thats what im looking for thanks

i usually get the basics of my drums down in one midi channel using the merge feature (and in-place editing) then separate the tracks using dissolve part when it comes to editing and arranging more

so once i have them "dissolved" i can apply the quantize i want on each separate midi track

so many little bits i still don't no!

Hey sorry. I guess what i'm saying is for some reason whenever I try to change the level of a midi track using the mixer, for some reason often times it will not work... basically i'll move the slider around on the mixer for that midi track and it has no difference on the volume. I think this might happen only for re-wired midi tracks but i'm not sure... Like I have to go into the re-wired program (Reason, FL) and change the level of that device or track from there... which sucks cause then it's like your mixing on 2 or 3 different programs.

The only way I really found to defeat this is to export the file to a .wav and then mess with it, but this can be a pain in the ass cause then whenever you alter it you have to export it again.

Also actually that makes me wonder, is there a way to export a bunch of different tracks solo at once? Or you probably just have to do it one by one?

No worries, glad I could help.

Don't let that discourage you, you're never going to know it all, dude. Just try to keep at it by makin' (and completing) tracks, asking questions like you're doing now, and just dippin' into every resource there is that has anything to do with production - even if it isn't based around Electronic Music.

If at all possible, save some time and spend some time with cats that know more than you, that's a sure fire way to learn what could possibly take you 6 months within a few days.

Anyway, good luck!

Hey...

Here are two mini tutorials:

Midi channels: http://www.zshare.net/video/1269556466d18da7/

Rewired channels: http://www.zshare.net/video/1269739644461064/

You don't have to download anything if you don't want to, just wait for it to play. As you'll see, both videos pretty much encompass the same overall direction, they're just in two separate folders.

Anyway, do exactly as I did and let me know whether or not it worked.

i will check those tutorials as i have the same issues adjusting volumes

i put it down to the fact with some VST's there does not seem to be a volume "button"

You can control the volume (and anything else i.e. automation and what not) on any VST by following the steps in that tutorial.

Dont forget to set up multiple templates for all you soft synths.... with cubase you can save many sets of templates which can be switched between easily.......

Now I don't know how to do that.

Although I don't use automation to arrange my tracks but Im feeling the template thingy because i can create a musically correct arrangement template and use it as a guide.

Im I understanding the template thingy correctly?

blackwax

yes can we expand on using templates

this is something i have never heard of (only in reason like a default template that it starts as )

CUBASE / NUENDO TEMPLATES

What im refering to is

1. GENERIC REMOTE TEMPLATES - using your midi controller to control all your synths / effects / etc, with a template set up for each and every effect.

2. PROJECT TEMPLATES - Creating a template which includes all your busses, a few midi files etc.. to get you started - I like to split my screen too using the split function and have audio in one half, midi in the other (the same loops, just bounced down, then i can turn stuff off to save cpu)

heres a short tutorial i wrote about it

http://www.mnml.nl/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=31302&postdays=0&postorder=asc&highlight=generic+remote+template&start=15

REMEMBER TO USE THE OFF BUTTONS ON SYNTHS / EFFECTS TO SAVE CPU TOO...

Hope that helps
