What is it about this song that people can't get enough of?
Is it the Carl Bean Sample, is it Pal Joey's Drum track that can be heard in many of his productions, is it the combination of the two, what is it?
Out of all the House Cuts I have heard througout the years, this is the only one that I really can never get tired of hearing.
Peace
Definitely the sample. There's just something about that record that WORKS.....JMJ

This is a favorite of mine.I had doubles and used to rip this tune to shreds.I think the part that got folks were the hard driving beats, the sax riff, and the bassline. That shit would just rock.

This record almost killed me when I first heard it. 10th grade lifting weights in my bedroom listeing to WPRB in Princeton, I was listening to "Mary had a little boy" by Snap or whoever made it and out of nowhere comes in this loop, I was gasping for air "helllp......hellpppppp...".
One of those JFK moments.

I feel the same way about SOHO: Hot Music (another Pal Joey production, if I am not mistaken). Classic!!

it's that Pal Joey's feel, that nu groove feel + that uplifting energy this track's bringing.

magic_juan Boy I hated "Hot Music" when I first heard it. I don't know what it was that made me dislike the record. But I remember listening to a Kiss Mix at 6 mix and someone was playing live keys over the track and I was hooked ever since.

I was on holiday in NYC when it came out and heard it over and over in assorted mix shows all weekend - it was electrifying and it drove me crazy trying to find out what it was.

Used to rock this in The Hummingbird - 3000+ venue 1989.
Haven't played it since then.

(trainspotting:)
The beat is sampled from 'Rescue Me' by Debbie Malone, a British production. Listen between the kick and you can hear the ambience from the Debbie Malone record.
But Pal Joey made it his own with the stutter.

I wish the Kerri Chandler 9-minute edit of Earth People 'Dance' had come out on Champion UK two years ago as promised. I heard this on Michael Fossati's site and it is all that. All the feel of the original but with even more intensity, I swear it would have blown tha f*ck up all over again. Apparently white label copies were available for a time out of Vinyl Junkies shop in the UK. Anybody who has and wants to sell one, please contact me on the PM anytime.
Pal Joey, Wayne Gardiner and the Burrells blew my mind in 1990 and I haven't been the same since. True.

Hey D,
It was by Debbie Malone, called 'Rescue Me'.
I forgot the original UK label, krush or something like that, but it also came out on Profile in the U.S.

What's the story with the mix that has the announcer on it: "and now ... Pal Joey"?

I taped a mix from one of these shows of Neon Leon working like 3 different mixes of Earth People, and he's hyperactive throughout the whole mix, which was a revelation at the time - also had TT "When You Hold Me" and "I Can't Get No Sleep".

The track sample's Carl Bean's "I was born this way".
It's a simple look that kinda reminds you of Chic's "Dance Dance Dance".
You hear the vocal snippet of Chic saying "Dance...dance dance dance dance.."
Real hard gritty beat, with a sax melody.
I know you've heard it before, check out some of the older mixes from 1990 to around 1994 on this site, especially from Tony Humphries.

I wish I got there a year earlier just to hear Julius Papp on Hot 97.7 in San Jose and more of Hosh Gureli on KMEL.
Vitamin J (Julius Papp) had the deepest mixes out of anyone out there during that time, and he was the cleanest mixer I ever heard. I would not be surprised if he wore out any Pal Joey cuts.
