View Full Version : Burning fat

Joining the Y today because I have to get back into shape. I probably could stand to lose 10lbs, but what I really want is to burn the fat and become more lean. As far as my knowledge goes, cardio is the key, but how much is enough to drop the extra pounds in about 2 to 3 months?

Any advice or self knowledge would be cool. smile.gif

Not sure about that but try not to overdo it. You need to keep fuel in your body when you are working out. If you can swim I can't think of a better way to shed pounds tone up and get lean and cut. Cardio = lap swimming.

Swimming huh? hmmm..... Not a very good swimmer, perhaps I'll take some lessons. Swim suits ugh! :(

I've been on what I call the Half-Assed Atkins diet. I haven't had any pasta since March, don't each much bread, plenty of vegetables and fruits. Boneless Chicken, steaks, no pork, and fish. Unsweetened Grate Fruit Juice is the shizneettt!!

I lost 15 pounds within a 2 week period, mainly water. I'll have to excercise the rest off. I did gain about 5 pound back, but I've been working to burn that off again.

Ask Michael J. Carmona about what he did.

Peace

what Groove said, lay off the carbs, definitely potatoes all processed stuff, sugars, fruit drinks. drink only 100% juice with nothing added.

if you want a leaner diet with not too much meat, stick with chicken & eat lots of varieties of beans. tofu is also very nutritious & eat whole grains & plenty of fruits for breakfast.

hey Gf,

to burn fat, you idealy stay within a range of 50-65% of your maximum heartrate frequence.. The onus must be on durance and not on short heavy efforts..

About food...one thing that people don't do often is simply reduce the size of their meal portions. We also tend to eat until we feel stuffed. Reduce your portions, eat slowly, and skip the temptation for second helpings. I've noticed if I eat slowly, by the time I'm done with portion #1, I'm not feeling like I need #2.

Exercise-wise, try starting out setting a goal for 3 days a week doing at least a 1/2 hour of some cardio exercise. If you can't do a 1/2 hour without stopping, then set your sights lower and increase the amount of time on your next visit. Ultimately, if you could do 60 minutes of cardio (and it doesn't have to be on the same machine), that would be great. To me, it wouldn't matter what you do...cross training machine, lifecycle, stairstepper, whatever. Just the fact that you are doing SOMETHING is what counts. I'd also suggest adding some weights to your getting-healthy experience. People focus so much on weight loss when health isn't just about being thinner (though you wouldn't believe it from the magazine covers and infomercials). Muscle health and strength are important also, especially as we get older. Muscle also burns more caleries than fat (yet another reason to remember to add muscle). If you do add any weight training, remember when you weigh yourself that your weight will not be a good reflection of your progess. It is possible that you'll be adding muscle and losing fat at the same time and on the scale, it may not look like you are losing the weight you expect. (Yet another reason to focus less on weight loss and more on overall cardio fitness and strength)

Good luck!

Oh heres an article on some myths concerning some of your possible questions. http://content.health.msn.com/content/article/64/72532.htm

Last thing...BE PATIENT WITH YOURSELF. I've seen many people who just lose patience. One of my coworkers is that way. She was probably about 120 lbs overweight and was getting discouraged because she couldnt see results after awhile. We could see changes though and once she thought about it ("oh yeah! I CAN walk up the DC Metro escalator without losing my breath now!), she realized that she was making progress. She is sticking to it now and slowly but surely, getting much healthier.

(if you've ever seen some of the subway-to-street-level escalators in DC, you know that walking up one is some serious exercise for anyone, regardless of health)

I'm done now. :D

do not overdo it in the first sessions.. The onus should initially be on frequency , more then on 'suffering' if you want to burn fat.. It's much better to excercise several times a week at a moderate pace then going over your limit once or twice a week ..That will not help you burn fat..Try to sport as much as possible, and gradually build up your efforts.. If you do not have cardio gear , you can follow this rule : one must be able to talk without problems while doing the excercise. If you are not able to talk, you are doing to much effort..

greetings,

Thanks guys for all the info smile.gif

Eating has never been a problem for me, I usually tend to eat healthy. I tend to have to remember to eat these days...hate cooking.

However, I just got back from joining and they have a whole bunch of classes that I can take, even an adult beginner swimming class. My orientation is tomorrow so it should be interesting.

I think this has been the best idea I have had all summer. :D

Eat about 6-7 meals a day (small portions of course), that will greatly increase your metabolism and your digestive system. You CAN eat some pasta's and breads, just don't overdo it and try and stay away from the #1 killer.....SUGAR..

And another thing...sweat, sweat and more sweat...lots of cardio can do you no wrong...definitely builds your stamina ;)

Key is you need to eat a balanced diet (I'm very good at preaching but not always good at practicing myself;) ), you can eat some carbs, even some fat as long as the portions aren't overwhelming and as long as you take in your veggies too.
Keeping stamina up at our old age isn't easy, but it can be done ;) Lots of sweating and cardio is vital. You can even walk and not run and get into shape but some of the things Jon Martin mentioned here are also very good. In other words ...keep active. The more you sit around and eat nachos and hang out on the DHP doesn't do you any good. :D And I'm not directing this at you...a whole lot of us are guilty of this :D

You can overdo cardio...Cortisol levels in your body will rise and burn fat as well as muscle, which you dont want to do since muscle speeds up your metabolism..Just look at any top notch marathon runner..Their bodies look terrible..But check out the sprinters...About 20 mins 3 times a week varying your speed up and down, will do the trick..You also should lift weights 3 times a week, concentrating one day on upper body, and the other day lower body. Also supplement with CLA...A fat that burns fat. esp abdominal fat.

In simple terms, to lose weight means to burn more calories than you take in.

Do an analysis of your general calorie intake everyday and what basic calorie intake it takes to maintain your weight. Next, find out the type of physical activity and the time interval in doing that exercise that burns 'x amount of calories'

Consult with a personal trainer, nutritionist or even books and websitess to find out your calorie maintenance levels and to what degree certain exercises burn calories. There are formulas in which you can detemine what level of calories you need everyday to maintain your weight and what type of exercise burns 'x amount of calories,' but I dont have that information on hand.

By no means should you ever starve your body - that is counter productive and in all actuality may cause your body to gain weight. The idea is to eat several small/moderate balanced meals (around 6-8) and burn off calories thru aerobic exercise.

Honestly the type of exercise doesnt matter...do any type of physical activity where you sweat. You also dont have to work out everyday. I believe that working out 3 days a week (every other day) for 1 hour vigorously is good enough; if you work out everyday, your body does not get a chance to rest and rebuild. Eat healty, but learn to burn more calories than you eat and you will lose weight. It will take some time but be consistent and stay in it for the long haul...best of luck.

I just started. Aside from the sore muscles, it feels great. It's the first formal exercise I've done in 10 years graemlins/spanka.gif

Timmy is right about the cortisol levels. If you train longer than an hour, your body will release cortison. So try to avoid longer trainingsessions than an hour.

IF you wanna burn fat this is the best way>

Go to the gym and train your legs 2 times aweek as hard as you can. Try to do cardio at 85% heartrate cardio for no longer than 15 minutes.
This way you will increase your basic methabolism. Do this for about 4 weeks. In this 4 weeks you can almost eat all you want. Try to avoid sugar and alcohol as much as you can, and eat lots of proteines.

After the 4 weeks, try to cardio for 30till 60 minutes per work out, 3 times a week. Add to this a low calorie- high proteine diet with some fitness, and youll be back in shape in a month.
Also depending on the amount of fat in your body you have right now.

i do a little yoga but i want to do pilates. my friend is a ballerina/personal trainer and she said that it helps her form when dancing.

oh yeah gf, i've found that buying fitness mags keeps me motivated to want to do more. plus it never hurts to be more educated about fitness health.
