Kerri's my boy, but I hope he didn't ruin it.
Some records need to be left alone.

it sounds great actually, if you're into a jazz-style approach completely re-done with live musicians.

And we wonder why the music has no originality anymore. And we wonder why labels are going out of business. And we wonder why Producers are going to the Progressive side of the music.

To tell you the truth, I don't.
Why feel the need to listen to something that has years upon years of proof that it's a TIMELESS record?
How many remakes of "Take the A-Train" have you heard. COUNTLESS remakes, but when you hear the music, it's played in the same emotion as the original.
Catch my drift?

i'm with bougie on this one: it sounds great, give it a listen, you'll see smile.gif
it's not a remix at all, more like a very respectful jazz interpretation (i should be a journalist)

let's reserve judgement until we've listened to it. later if you don't like it, don't buy it. why bitch? btw, live intrumentation sounds like interesting take.

my counter argument to groove comes in the form of "summertime"
perhaps one of the most timeless pieces of music ever created...and also a jazz standard, recorded, sampled, rerecorded, reinterpreted, regurgitated, respected, redefiend, redone, retempoed, remixed, rereed...etc.
and while some may be better to my ear, i hear massive amounts of respect in so many of the renditions...so...

I have heard it and i think it is outstanding.
great point about "summertime". Jazz classics become "standards" why can't house tunes? The fact that Kerri did it is awesome...like a nod from one genius to another.
Large usually puts sound clips up on their site. Maybe we can ask for this one to go up? I already checked this morning and it is not up yet.

Hey,I was upset when kerri re-did Pat Metheny-Are you going with me?
That shit was hot and respected the original.I would give it a listen before judging it,seeing that it's live musicians.
Ya never know Groove.Hey,you may have to do some serious digging to find what you like or...change it up and play some different shit you like.
Hell,I don't like some of the modern tunes that folks are going bananas over, then some of them I really do love, from a partyng persons POV.
I have a question for ya Groove..."Where did you party at?"
This is not a question to try to bust on ya,cause we are mad cool.I just never really heard you mention anything about partying and that may also have a reason why you may not like some of the popular stuff out now.

the sounds cool but now that there is the Jazz reinterpratation for this they should make the techno mix, tribal mix, progressive mix, afro mix etc whatever it can be a good rendition to a classic Hope it is hail.gif
i really liked the way they touched Ricky Montanari & co the Murk classic Outta Limits - mission control(azuli) that was an improvement on a classic which very rare happens without goin Jazz on anything they stayed on the feelin of the original graemlins/acclaim.gif

I'm all for interpretation in dance music... why can't one producer take a classic and put it into the context of his own experiences, sound or tastes? It's not like he's trying to take away the experiences of those that love the original... he's trying to interpret his own experiences with the music.
PS. The original is a beautiful record and nobody questions whether or not it is timeless.

This is not a question to try to bust on ya,cause we are mad cool.I just never really heard you mention anything about partying and that may also have a reason why you may not like some of the popular stuff out now. It's not an issue of where I partied. I've partied in small clubs in Jersey, big CLubs in LA, Sacramento, San Fransisco, and Atlanta. Big Deal.
Alot of it has to do with my musical tastes, my upbringing, and my perspective on the scene. You weren't the only one that wasn't crazy about "Are you Going with me", but then again, I'm still drooling over Kerri's "My Childhood" that samples The Headhunters "Chameleon". At the same time, there aren't that many remakes of Pat and Herbie's records in the first place.
This is one of the reasons why I'm working on my own musical projects. Some of you may have heard some of my work, but you haven't heard the original material I've been working on. Original Material, something we do not hear alot of these days. I don't want to hear "interpretations", I want to hear new shit. If we're stuck listening to the same ole producers remake the same ole 50 records that DJ Whyteout talked about a couple of years ago in a very notorius mix, then we're all going to be in a world of hurt. I'd rather hear a Kerri Chandler Jazz Cafe part II and part III then a remake.
It's getting tired and frustrating.

apart from this remake the SUBLIMINAL summer stormer ie. HarrY Romero Feat Robert Owens - "i go back" had many same things in the tunes the synts percussions etc the only thing was the text of the tune I GO BACK BACK IN THE DAYS but as well singed by Robert Owens....
was as well very similar in the makin to "can you feel it"
so i think its not the 1st remake of this tune if we stay analyzin

picked this up last week "Street Music 2.0" or something like that. The song is not that bad actually. As interpretations go, it has some stuff the original had and some new elements to enhance this version.
If your loooking for the same Fingers feel, its not there. This is a Kerri project and he put his stamp on it his way. Having been a fan for a while, imma play it and see how the audience reacts.

hmmmm...interesting thread...
Groove.. his rendition is pretty cool...It threw me for a loop the first time I heard it until I realized what it was. It's just a kind of tribute to it. He did it jazzy cuz there was no way in hell that there would be another way to do that record and get away with it even sounding remotely decent. It is what it is...and unless your supremely confident that you can pull it off then your right leave it the f alone. But trust me ...he pulled it off....the drums are hot...

Good work Kerri ( as usual), you have proven time and time again that you possess the Midas Touch.
There's nothing wrong with re-making a so-called untouchable classic. It actually takes balls. Way to let yo nuts hang Kerri!!!

Some of you say that I'm whining and moaning and need to hear this mix before I make up an opinion but here is something we all should think about.
There was a little scene in the Movie "Malcolm X" in which Al Freeman Jr. playing the Honorable Elijah Muhammod gives Denzel a glass of water. He then fills the glass with dirt and begins to explain to Denzel to something to the effect that if you give the people a glass of dirty water, and this is all they're going to choose from, then they're going to drink the water regardless, but if you give them a choice of allowing them to drink from a clean glass, they will drink from that clean glass of water.
Now taking that into consideration, this is what's going on in Hip Hop, and Dance Music. Of course there are many alternatives to choose from but if we're going to allow DJs and producers to "create" music with no "UMPH" or no Originality and allow ourselves to just settle for music that is not original, not innovative, music with no life span or legs, then we can all call ourselves Sheep.
It's not an issue of listening to the song for myself, it's an issue of regurgitated Ideas, no different then the 12 million remixes of "Finally" that I have a problem with.
Some of us "moan and groan" when we hear shitty rap records on the radio and on television, but it's OK because Kerri or Kenny and Louie did it? C'mon!!!!
And if some of you think that this is an issue of a person "hatin" on another's work, you're 100% wrong!!!!!
And for some of you who want to settle with the belief of, "If it makes the crowd jump then play it", well there's more stuff out there that can make the crowd jump, but some of us are too scared to play it.
Peace

This was not to be a cheesy remake to get paid, but one in my own image to say thank you to my brother Larry Heard. I will never do a song unless I "can feel it". Two it's not some rip off sample thing, it is a live acoustic version that I would play out with the band from time to time as a cover while i djing with keyboards. (I actually did a second version while i was in chicago at the end of the night of the large party.)
this is my Jazz version with fretless bass, grand piano, leslie B3, Trap Set drums and percussion. I made it as a thank you for all of the love and respect Mr heard has givin me all these years, because I learned lots from his sound. it's that simple it's, from me to him. as far as the EP goes there are three other original songs on it as well. Poverty, thing I see, and it will come to pass, made for for all to hear my love for my fellow man, I put my heart and soul into it for those who will listen, enjoy and understand. But for those who know me personally they understand the deeper meaning of this ep. take care and be good to your music. smile.gif Kerri

I can't believe that there was even a debate. Having heard the track, there is no question that this was done out of respect. Hell, the title remains the same "Can you Feel it". Excellent tribute to Mr. Fingers. Live bands do covers all the time. We are only blessed now to be able to bring the band to the club. Not too mention that there are 3 other slammin tracks on the EP. Yo, way to bring the heat to the wax without melting it. The Ep is tight. AS USUAL

I caught hell last year on this very board because Nina Simone's "See Line Woman" remake by Masters at Work. What I noticed was that you're version, The Songstress "See line Woman" on Ibadan, was unheard of by many people on this board. It was a total shock to me. As a result, MAW revieved more praise for their mix and yours went unheard. People tried to justify not hearing your version because of disctubution issues with Ibadan and other mumbo jumbo, but these are just excuses if you ask me. I find that disturbing to say the least.
I'm not gonna site her and throw little pictures such as hail.gif and graemlins/respekt.gif because you're work throughout the years has earned more than just these tiny silly pictures.
The issue I'm having is that there are far too many "interpretations" and "remakes" coming out and I'm wondering where all the originality has gone. You are one of the few along with Jovonn who have not been part of a "trend" or "fad". You style of production has roots that we can all relate back to the work you have done in the early 90s. Many producers out there do not possess the ability to "Capitalize" on one given theme and maintain this progessive upgrade through the years like you and many few have accomplished.
This is not to say that the remake was bad, but in my mind I have to put this remix into a catagory of so many remix projects out there that have been created to capitalize on a proven work of art.
Peace

it would be interesting to see out of a sample of new releases for a week or two, just how much is remakes/rip offs vs. original material. (Does "original" mean no samples can be used?)
Anybody here work at a record store that could list their incoming batch of new material over the past couple of weeks?

I think a remake is cool if it's done respectfully, to introduce it back to the new people who haven't heard a track, because what ends up next is someone saying but did you hear the original? and then they
go track that original down and buy it too. to me if
you invoke thought that in it self makes it deep. Groove thanks for bringing up debates and I respect your opinion, but as I said before there are three other songs that are original, and as far as the name goes if I didn't name it "Can you feel it".
It would get a little tricky with the publishing.
And I want to see him get paid, BMI has to know what the title is, but
give the EP a listen, it all fits the mood as a collection. Take care Kerri smile.gif
I think large may put a clip up soon.. smile.gif
