VANCOUVER, BC UNITED STATES

Premieres on The History Channel(R) Sunday, April 20, 8-10pm ET/PT

VANCOUVER, British Columbia, April 2 /PRNewswire/ -- From Amazon
jungles to the American Plains, British mental wards, Swiss labs, New York
mansions and Grateful Dead shows, the history of hallucinogenic drugs is as
fantastic as the visions the drugs produce. Wade Davis, is a modern-day
anthropologist, author ("The Serpent and the Rainbow") and protege of one
of psychedelia's most intrepid forefathers -- Richard Evans Schultes. Davis
traces Schultes' life's work as one of the greatest botanist-explorers of
the 20th century and reveals an illustrated history of the world's most
mind-altering plants and substances in: PEYOTE TO LSD: A PSYCHEDELIC
ODYSSEY, premiering Sunday, April 20, 2008 at 8:00 p.m. ET/PT on The
History Channel(R).

(Photo: http://www.newscom.com/cgi-bin/prnh/20080402/LAW501)

Winner of the prestigious 2008 CINE Golden Eagle Award, the documentary
follows the career of Schultes, who journeyed into far-flung areas in
search of ritualistic healing medicines known to produce powerful visions:
Peyote, mushrooms, Ayahuasca. Davis, a former student of Schultes at
Harvard and author of Schultes' biography ("One River"), travels to the
exotic locations Schultes once voyaged to, seeking the same experiences.

Along the way, set to the music of the Grateful Dead and featuring
input from experts such as Dead co-founder Bob Weir, plus Dr. Andrew Weil,
and LSD inventor Dr. Albert Hofmann, the documentary reveals how
hallucinogens got from jungle shamans to the hippie generation. Questions
arise about the attitude toward psychedelics: their great potential
benefits versus perceived harmful side effects. Why is it that so many
ancient cultures consider hallucinogenic plants -- a medicine given from
God, while in today's culture they are outlawed, and even reviled. PEYOTE
TO LSD: A PSYCHEDELIC ODYSSEY is a long, strange trip that began decades
ago, but is probably nowhere near its end. Even now, new uses for
hallucinogens are being sought and tested by leading universities and
medical institutions.

PEYOTE TO LSD: A PSYCHEDELIC ODYSSEY is produced and directed by Peter
von Puttkamer of Gryphon Productions Inc. along with producer Sheera von
Puttkamer and co-producer Wade Davis. Executive Producer for The History
Channel is Michael Stiller. An exhibit of Richard Evans Schultes'
photographs will run at the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History
in Washington, DC, April 16 - November, 2008. See the trailer at

Wade Davis is an excellent speaker and author.

Here is a lecture from Wade on TED.COM. - http://www.ted.com/index.php/talks/view/id/69

I would recommend exhausting the rest of the videos on the site as well if you haven't already.

-With stunning photos and stories, National Geographic Explorer Wade Davis celebrates the diversity of the world's indigenous cultures, now disappearing from the planet at an alarming rate. He argues passionately that we should be concerned not only for preserving the biosphere, but also the "ethnosphere" -- "the sum total of all thoughts and dreams, myths, ideas, inspirations, intuitions brought into being by the human imagination."

A thought spilled on paper...

Get some medical education, start with emergency medicine, do some good things for others regularly, don't use drugs irresponsibly - ever, educate others with good knowledge and experience regularly.

Numerous accounts of the discovery of LSD have been published in English; none, unfortunately, have been completely accurate. Here, at last, the father of LSD details the history of his "problem child" and his long and fruitful career as a research chemist. In a real sense, this book is the inside story of the birth of the Psychedelic Age, and it cannot be denied that we have here a highly candid and personal insight into one of the most important scientific discoveries of our time, the signiflcance of which has yet to dawn on mankind.
Surpassing its historical value is the immense philosophical import of this work. Never before has a chemist, an expert in the most materialistic of the sciences, advanced a Weltanschauung of such a mystical and transcendental nature. LSD, psilocybin, and the other hallucinogens do indeed, as Albert Hofmann asserts, constitute "cracks" in the edifice of materialistic rationality, cracks we would do well to explore and perhaps widen.

As a writer, it gives me great satisfaction to know that by this book the American reader interested in hallucinogens will be introduced to the work of Rudolf Gelpke, Ernst Junger, and Walter Vogt, writers who are all but unknown here. With the notable exceptions of Huxley and Wasson, English and American writers on the hallucinogenic experience have been far less distinguished and eloquent than they.

This translation has been carefully overseen by Albert Hofmann, which made my task both simpler and more enjoyable. I am beholden to R. Gordon Wasson for checking the chapters on LSD's "Mexican relatives" and on "Ska Maria Pastora" for accuracy and style.

Two chapters of this book - "How LSD Originated" and "LSD Experience and Reality" - were presented by Albert Hofmann as apaperbefore the international conference "Hallucinogens, Shamanism and Modern Life" in San Francisco on the afternoon of Saturday, September 30, 1978. As a part of the conference proceedings, the first chapter has been published in the Journal of Psychedetic Drugs, Vol. 11 (1-2), 1979.

Like the time I was at a big field party in Northampton (1991?) realising that that the St John's Ambulance people carry Oxygen, I faked an Asthma attack to get the Oxygen to boost my high. Great stuff.

We kept that going for hours, I was borrowing my asthma inhaler to my friends, so they looked like they was really suffering breathing problems also. One was on the oxygen whilst one chatted up and distracted the nurse and the third turned up the volume on the oxygen tank :)
