Anyone know about this Moon. It is the Cold Moon, the Moon before the Yule. The shadows are different and the light from the Moon at this time seems to be blue tinged. Anyone else know more about this lovely Moon?

A Full Cold Moon
Have No Fear, It's Just a Phase
Monday, December 8, 2003; Page C16

The leaves have fallen from the trees, and the naked branches resemble spindly fingers clawing at the charcoal sky. The full moon peers from behind an errant cloud to outline these skeletal images. Suddenly, the hair on the back of the neck starts to rise, and shivers cause your hands to tremble. Is this a "Goosebumps" story? Are these shivers of fear? No, it's just cold, and the Full Cold Moon is out.

Of course, the moon does not necessarily dictate the weather. However, because the full moon of December (you can see it tonight) usually appears close to the winter solstice, the longest night of the year, you can be sure that there's not a lot of sunshine in December. Not much sunshine, not much warmth. That's how December's full moon got the name Full Cold Moon.

Did you know that all the full moons have names? Most of the names come from Native American lore. All of the names reflect on the season, and what normally would have been significant to many of the tribes. For example, the Full Harvest Moon gets its name because this full moon usually rises just after sunset. That gave farmers and gatherers enough light to finish harvesting their crops. It's not surprising, then, that the Full Harvest Moon shines most often in September.

The Full Pink Moon is seen in April; that's when wild phlox flowers bloom. May's moon is called the Full Flower Moon. (After all, April showers bring May flowers.) So, there are 12 full moons each year, right? Usually, but 2004 is special; it will have 13. Does that mean there will be 13 months in 2004? Definitely not. There's about one full moon per month, but since a lunar cycle is 28 days and most months have 30 or 31 days, every once in a while a month gets two full moons. When this happens, the second moon of the month is called a Blue Moon. In July 2004, there will be a full moon on the 2nd and another on the 31st. You may have heard the saying "once in a blue moon." This refers to a rare occurrence, but let's be clear, the second moon of the month doesn't look more blue than any other moon!

Bear in mind the moon is your emotional life. It relates to immediate emotional responses. It's those reactions instilled by conditioning; the memory and learned habit patterns. The influence of the Moon is more subtle, for it relates to personality beneath the surface; your feelings and your subconscious self. It shows how you react to those around you based on the sum of your conditioned viewpoint and unguarded self-projection. Often, the Moon's place in the chart shows a considerably different side of the nature, a side fostered by emotions, upbringing, and habit patterns that have developed over time.

Cold Moon
This month is an excellent time to do spellwork for endings and beginnings. Begin by carefully preparing a list of all the things you want to expel from your life. On another sheet of paper, list the things you would like to come into your life. When you are ready, burn a purifying incense, such as frankincense. Put a cauldron or metal bowl on the altar for the burning papers.
