JACKO FINDS ISLAM
By CINDY ADAMS, BARRY BORTNICK and DAVID K. LI
December 18, 2003 -- EXCLUSIVE
The King of Pop is restyling himself Jacko X.
Michael Jackson last night became a member of the Nation of Islam - and sources told The Post his religious changeover comes along with a shake-up of his personal staff.
High-ranking members of the Nation of Islam have been working to bring Jackson into Rev. Louis Farrakhan's flock - and Jackson's conversion is now well-known in the NOI community.
Exactly why Jackson converted wasn't clear to The Post's sources.
But Fox News's Web site reported yesterday that Jackson's brother Jermaine, who converted to Islam in 1989, has been seeking to win favor with his more famous sibling, and has brought Farrakhan's chief of staff, Leonard F. Muhammad, into Jacko's inner circle as a "bodyguard."
That's just one of many changes under way in Jackson's inner circle, sources said.
Word of Jackson's religious conversion comes as prosecutors prepared to formally file charges against him in a California child-molestation case - and as authorities agreed to return Jackson's passport to him so he can travel to Great Britain this weekend.
Jackson isn't expected to return until Jan. 6, lawyers said in court papers. Lawyers also agreed to put off Jackson's arraignment for five days, until Jan. 16.
Jackson remains free on $3 million bail after he surrendered to authorities and was arrested on Nov. 20. Two days earlier, cops tore through Neverland, his amusement-park-style estate just outside Los Olivos, Calif., looking for evidence to back up molestation claims made by a 14-year-old boy.
Although there's talk that some in Jackson's camp want to replace defense lawyer Mark Geragos, the high-priced Hollywood attorney appeared in firm control yesterday, and met privately in the afternoon with Santa Barbara County District Attorney Thomas Sneddon.
Sneddon said he plans to file the charges personally this afternoon at the courthouse in Santa Maria, Calif.
The King of Pop has vigorously denied the molestation claims.
L.A. County social workers in February cleared Jackson of allegations he molested that boy. But former Santa Barbara County Sheriff Jim Thomas has said he believes the alleged Santa Barbara County molestation took place after the L.A. County probe.

Picking an affiliation before he goes to the joint. Smart move, considering the circumstances and his appearance.
Does the NOI allow sequined bow ties??.......JMJ

LOL @ circumcision. Is there anything left to remove?

King asked Geragos about news reports stating that his client had joined Louis Farrakhan's Nation of Islam, and that renowned defense attorney Johnnie Cochran would be replacing Geragos.
"The fact of the matter is -- you want to know where this originates from? It's the PR firm that the prosecution hired," Geragos said. "And what they did is, they played the race card. They're trying to inject Johnnie Cochran into this. They're trying to inject the Nation of Islam as some kind of a buzz word into this."
Susan Tellem, head of the PR firm Tellem Worldwide, told CNN's Art Harris she was "baffled" by Geragos' claim.
"We have no idea where he got that," she said.
Jackson, 45, who was booked November 20 and released on $3 million bond, was charged Thursday with seven counts of child molestation and two of administering an intoxicating agent for the purpose of molesting a child. Jackson is to be arraigned January 16.
He has denied all the charges.
Geragos denied, as did Jackson's brother Jermaine, that Michael was planning to join Louis Farrakhan's controversial African-American organization, or that Cochran would take over as his attorney.
Geragos said he learned of the information "on background from various reporters who admitted that the PR flack firm that they just hired, their crisis management ... was the one who's out there fanning the flames of this."
Earlier, Jackson's spokesman, Stuart Backerman, denied media reports that the Nation of Islam had taken over and fired Michael's defense team and PR team.
Backerman told CNN "like many groups and people who have come to Michael's defense, he is grateful" for the support of the Nation of Islam, but the organization is not "taking over."
"The Nation of Islam has received no funding or direction from the Jackson camp," he said. "They have not been sanctioned."

They haven't had a major public supporter since Muhammad Ali then Mike Tyson!
IMO: Mike Tyson didn't do as much as Muhammad Ali did for the nation. Muhammad Ali was educated Mike Tyson just got his GED after several attemps. In the back of my mind I think he bought his GED!
Also, Mike Tyson never changed his name so to me it's clear is dedication to the nation was a public front just to boost his career.
To me its too late for MJ to try to cross over but some would say it's better late than never! graemlins/conf44.gif

Mike Tyson was NEVER a member of the N.O.I... He became a member of the "Orthodox" Muslim community while in prison-- not the N.O.I... And, I believe he was calling himself by an Islamic name when he first got out of jail...
Muhammad Ali, on the other hand was given his name by Elijah Muhammad-- which is what really got him world wide respect to come out of his "former slave master's name". And, I have alot of footage of Muhammad Ali when he was a minister in the N.O.I., and he was one to ALWAYS make it plain that before he accepted the N.O.I.'s teaching, he wasn't very educated himself, and gave all the credit for what he did know and the stance that he took to Elijah Muhammad-- not the other way around...
One!

THANKS!!! I though we were talking about M. Jordan untill this point. I knew he was out of work, but I couldn't believe things had gotten this bad for him. Not that there is anything wrong with NOI, but so many times you see bro's finding it after-the-fact.
