The club that I dance at here has concrete floors and no matter what shoes I wear my feet generally hurt at some point throughout the night...I noticed that most of the dance floors in NY were wood and even on fliers that promoted parties would mention "new hardwood floors" or "hardwood floors", which were definitely different to dance on and my preference over the cement...

and I would assume that money would be a reason for having cement instead of wood...

which do you prefer as a dancer?

Wood floors are a definite must, however, I do hate it when people spill drinks all over the floor and it become sticky :(

tile or linoleum, like in the steppers' clubs...easier to spin with heels on...

You could very easily get shin splints by dancing on concrete floors for long periods of time. a cushioned insole might help......JMJ, aka Dr. Scholl smile.gif

but with wood floors, wouldn't certain type of shoes damage them? like heels and hard bottom shoes...

Wood floors are actually better physically to dance on because wood is forgiving, meaning that it can expand and contract with varying weights. Concrete is probably the worst thing to dance on for long periods of time, especially for the ankles and knees, because its a completely solid surface.

**This mini-consultation was brought to you by years and years of shaking my skinny black ass out on the dance floor...and you're welcome. graemlins/acclaim.gif

Ideal floor is wood with a subfloor made of wood to give it "bounce". Sometimes you get a wood floor laid over cement which can be just as unforgiving. You get to the point where you can tell by the pain in your feet/legs whether there is a subfloor or not. Baby powder does wonders to any type of unforgiving floor material. Club owners/managers should factor in the cost of maintaining a wood floor regularly. Those owners that don't are clueless.

Concrete is categorically bad for your body. Dancing on them can lead not only to shinsplints but also to stress fractures and other more serious injuries. If you must dance on concrete wear sneakers or other shoes designed for high impact work. Wood flooring that is sprung (laid over a plywood platform for additional give or spring) with or without a covering of linoleum or marley is orthepedically the best. Heels and shoes in general can do damage to a top quality dance floor, but with regular maintenace a hardwood floor can be kept in pretty decent shape. Rickey X a well maintained wooden floor is usually smmother and has better glide than one with an additional covering. That said lot of floors are poorly maintained...
