a briliant documentary is on PBS right now on the history of the BLUES and is produced by Martin Scorcese.
if anyone should be required to see this its every single Rock N Roll enthusiast: forcibly straped down to a chair, eyes taped open ala "Clock Work Orange" :D
ENJOY!

something that was stressed upon that I've been saying many times on DHP is that in the United States during the slave era, the beating of the drum was forbidden and could have resulted in death. That is why Africans sough out different ways to express themselves through other musical instruments. In the Caribbean, the drum was a significant instrument for alot of music henceforth why we have genres such as Rhumba, Merengue, Salsa and other forms of music that ahs derived from this ;)
I also like the points made by many Africans on despite the fact that Black americans were stripped of their culture and heritage there was still some kind of connection through the spirit with Africa through music. ;)
btw, I'm so happy that this documentray is going on for the whole week ! graemlins/OLA.gif
