Here we go again! It is the same Old Sh*t! When will we learn that we don't eat our young! We just keep poisoning the well, OVER and OVER, AGAIN and AGAIN ...like it was nothin. graemlins/conf44.gif
Keep on cannibalizing this scene and b-4 you know it there will nothing left! graemlins/puke.gif
I happen to be there when Loose Joints was born...in fact I was the midwife.....so I know who the real parents are and it ain't you, nor would it, could it, or EVER be you.
Shame, Shame, Shame on you. I suggest you go to the library and look for a dictionary. When you find such a book you can look for some "original words" that will reflect you and not take the good name of someone else's child and exploit it with your whims of I, me, mine. That is genocide, my brother! Maybe "loose screws" might be more fitting.
Wake up and smell the roses! I am sure that Arthur Russell and Steve D'Aquisto will be forgiving if you mend your fence and weed your garden while you still have time in your life.

All they do is dig their own graves, because to me them doing that reinforces the impression I have that they simply have no creativity, individuality nor are they capable of doing anything innovative. People like that may have a moment of success or celebrity"ism" but eventually they fade out like the burnt out sheep that they are.
I feel that I must speak out for those who are not here to speak for themselves and who were dear friends of mine and to the spirit of music. I will protect whatever/whenever it is necessary that what I feel is righteous.

i guess to me, since i know these cats and respect them as artists i see this party and their efforts as a positive thing.

Dave with all due respect, I could understand your point if they were ripping off the name of an older party like say ‘The Loft’ or The Music Box, then I could understand where you are coming from and that would be a flagrant disrespect.
However, naming your party after a music group, a group that had one of the most influential New York club classics of all time seem to me to be a different and acceptable thing to do.
Lose Joints is part of ‘house/club culture’ and for someone in that culture at present to pull a name of something from the past (any term except another clubs name), symbolizes a continuum.
Its like if you opened up a blues club and you used the name of an old blues song as the name of your place, which would be quite different from using the name of an older blues club.
Its different. I mean if they WERE a musical group instead of a party and called themselves Lose Joints, that would be something to be upset about…..
In this case, I really don’t see anything wrong with it.
New party with old party name= bad lame biter shit
New party with old club culture icon name(thats not an older party)= Ok to do

Why because its not really about 'my logic' is it?
A party named Lose Joints sounds cool doesnt it?
A party named Dave Mancuso does not.
But what if I had a band called The Loft?
What if I had a club called First Choice?
or
Nu Nu's
Or
Club Lonely
Or hell
The world (that was the name of a band)
Or
Adonis
Or
Chic
Or
Fatbacks
And so on and so on.....
By YOUR logic does that seem so far fetched or even 'disrespectful' or not creative?

I see no indication of this "inspiration" mentioned by them ... rather what I see is intellectual laziness for starters. And even if I did I would still be somewhat ..but less "protective" of what I believe is downright misuse of someone else's work/idenity. Lets face it....the scene is rampant with many reaching over the dinner table without even saying "excuse me" and often mugging someone else plate.
What happened to originality and creating your own true identity. Maybe then one could throw a (1) party theme around that vision.
There is a story around how Steve and Arthur came to using that title........most interesting. They were struggling over what to call the group as they were walking thru Washington Sq. Park. After a couple hours of discussing this they started walk out the park and they both agreed that the title "would come to them." No sooner that said someone was walking by them and said "Loose Joints." They looked at each and said, "That's it!"

What does any of that have to do with someone biting ?
Paying respect to the music and the scene is done by throwing a proper party, introducing new people to the music and expanding its reach in the essence in which it was created, copying a well known name or phrase is at the very least biting, and uncreative, and its very worst its piggybacking off of something else to catch your own fame.
I dont know these cats so I can't and wouldn't expect the worst, but at the same time, it is biting and it is uncreative.
I'm not an icon, I have no power, I'm gonna start DJ'ing hip-hop and using your name to help me gain a foothold in the scene, is that cool Matt ?
The fact that this discussion has turned into people jabbing @ David is, in my eyes, indicative of how much HOMAGE anyone is trying to pay to anything unless it benefits them.
Shall I copy/paste the opinions voiced elsewhere on the group Loose Joints so as to prove the amount of "homage" paid ?

New party with old club culture icon name(thats not an older party)= Ok to do Greetings:
Park. After a couple hours of discussing this they started walk out the park and they both agreed that the title "would come to them." No sooner that said someone was walking by them and said "Loose Joints." They looked at each and said, "That's it!"
d </font>
I understand where you are coming from Dave, but my argument isn’t whether or not using the name of an old music group for the name of a club doesn’t have to be justified by intent of use, its that from ‘band name’ to ‘club name’ is not THAT much of a ‘bite’.
I understand you mean well when you say the name of your party should have some sort of identity or purpose that is unique to you and your party, not that it is a justification but Im really not so sure that most people that throw parties ever consider the name in that regard.
For instance, any fucking party’s name that doesn’t have the damn word ‘Soul’ in it is breath of fresh air to me. Soul this, Soul that, and then fucking Deep this and Deep that…
Soul and fucking Deep, those are the terms of stale conformity an unoriginality in the party name game.
Speaking of which, I have a question for you…..
Based on your perspective how do you feel about FK, Krivit and Joe using ‘Body and Soul’ for the name of their party?
I mean after all, Body and Soul is the name of an old Jazz standard written waaaaaaaaaay before the creation of their party.
Are they not biting the title of someone else’s musical composition as the name of their party, which is in no way different from someone biting the name of a musical group for their party????????????????????????????????????????????? ??????????????????
Think about it.

Greetings Desko:
Exactly. If they are to have a clear road ahead than one must look wisely and clearly. Otherwise it can come back at you when you least expect it.
Using your own idenity for starters is a good way to go. It is simply good business. One can always throw a given party to show respect for an artist(s).

Someone from the party could have approached this and explained that the song or that era of music had a strong impact on them and their taste in/philosophy in music and that they wanted to use the term to reference this ideal and that the term was actually referencing what they hoped their patrons would experience (loose joints, ie dancing) but hey, I mean, in the end, some people think its riding the coattails of a recognizable name, others don't.
Anyone involved in this party and the organization of that party I have one question :
Did you use that name because it was a easily recognizable name within the dance community ?
Peace

Peace recognizable? i guarantee you 3/4 if not more of the people who were there dont even know who loose joints were with all due respect to the artist. and i know this from the feedback we got on the name and flyers

you can always ask them...
what i see is two cats that love this music and want to throw a party for others that appreciate it as well...they use what means they can...pooling money for flyers/promotions...trying to get a number of different guests....etc.
it seems very positive to me...maybe it is because i know them and have discussed their vision...
you have alot of power in this "scene". your parties are exclusive and invite only because you are trying to go for a certain vibe...that is understandable...
these cats are not "icons" in this scene and trying to do their thing...trying to get their stuff going...and not for nothing they are trying to do it while everything around them is telling them to give up...rec stores closing...clubs with no attendance...nyc club laws on the offensive..etc.
they know they will not make any money or become "successful" at throwing a dance music party this day and age...in nyc...
but they do it anyway...i think that right there is something extrememly positive.
but, we may see this in a different way because we both have different experiences that have molded us...i can dig that.
</font>
deesko, if you did try to use my name as your own i would battle you in front of the world and prove why it is my name and not yours...but, that is just me and how i handle stuff like that... </font>
Cool... I'll play downtempo instead of hip-hop and we'll be straight.
i think this thread turned into quick jabs and negativity because david came out pretty strong with his ideas and it casted a shadow on someone else's work...it is hard enough to get something going in this town without an "icon" saying negative things about it...we all have our opinions though.
Peace </font>
word...we see it differently...
i dont even care anymore...

I asked whether YOU used that name because it was a name/phrase that was easily recognizable to you or not, due to your knowledge of the musical group ?
ie, did your knowledge of a semi-successful group from the past influence or initiate your use of that name as the namesake for your party ?

I think David is understandably upset that your
party is named Loose Joints.
And given his
history, his intimate professional/musical and historical involvement
with Steve D'Aquisto and Arthur Russell and
others, it's
UNDERSTANDABLY REASONABLE
that he's upset.
I think he's made
a damn good argument.
Your flyer does not promote or communicate
ANYTHING that relates to the vibe or musical
roots or purpose of your party.
A naked woman...you're just using sex and
a drug reference to get bodies to show up as
I see it...I don't mean any disrespect, as I'm
a veteran of the promotion and club scene
myself.
In fact I worked at the space you're throwing
your party at between 1984 and 1991 when
it was called SAVE THE ROBOTS.
In my humble opinion you might consider and
reflect upon David's concerns and point of view,
and not interpret it as a "personal attack".
Also, I fail to see what point you're trying to
make in regards the disco ball incident
and your peculiar definition of Karma.
In my humble opininion, you should consider
changing the name of your party out of deference and respect to David Mancuso's
completely legitimate and reasonable objection
to your use of the name of the group that
was called Loose Joints.
And to be frank, I think it's a bad idea to use
a drug reference in the name of a party these
days.
I'm a pro-legalization type of person and a weed-head, but given the curret ANTI-CLUB
and anti-drug political climate, I don't like
to go to clubs where I CANNOT discretely
smoke herb.
With a club-nite called Loose Joints, attendance is out of the question until
you change the name and the dust settles.
In summary, I think that everyone has some
valid points, including and especially David.
And If I were in your shoes and David objected
to the party's name, I'd be understanding and
respectful to David and to the memories
of the late, great Steven D'Aquisto and Arthur
Russell.

My apologies to anyone if you were offended.
I am somewhat "thin skinned" when certain things occur especially when I feel it might hurt us and the overall scene. We are capable of so many wonderful things and yet we often shoot ourselves in the leg ...only because we are not thinking or caring how it might affect our neighbor. The world is a very small town and we must do things in a manner so that we can always feel good about each other and there by giving our full support to one another.

people always talk about support this and support that but most do nothing for the scene except complain and whine.
ive done many parties in the past for FREE. im a party dj and i do parties for fun cause i love making people dance and i want my dj friends to play. i dont do parties for $$$, i would have died from starvation already, especially in house music.
there are very few people i have respect when it comes to all this trash talk and a couple for sure are lil ray and timmy.
just cause youre a dj at a "club" doesnt make you a supporter of the scene

just to lay this to rest , at least for now (donger is not around to respond to all this)
i have the upmost respect for you and LOOSE JOINTS artist. we had no intention of exploiting the name or "piggybacking of their fame"
the name was used cause it described the intentions of our party.. to make people get loose to all joints (meaning hiphop, reggae, dance, electro etc)
we use this name in the upmost respect and respect the music as i said before we tell everyone who LOOSE JOINTS were and how that era influenced us.

i have the upmost respect for you and LOOSE JOINTS artist. we had no intention of exploiting the name or "piggybacking of their fame"
the name was used cause it described the intentions of our party.. to make people get loose to all joints (meaning hiphop, reggae, dance, electro etc)
we use this name in the upmost respect and respect the music as i said before we tell everyone who LOOSE JOINTS were and how that era influenced us.
thank you
peesh! Greetings Doug:
As Jamie pointed out earlier, Loose Joints (group)
- Is It All Over My Face (title) is rooted in our community of dance and music. My concern is that if used to "loosely" then we may inadvertently affect some of its historical roots. However if the flyer had in small print and said .. special thanks to the group: Loose Joints/Arthur Russell-Steve D'Aquistio ---then I can see a continuum of sorts and can live with that. If it wasn't intended that way then it should somehow be made clear as it is all connected.
I always felt that the more parties going on the better. Over the years, it is has been my most feverant (spel) wish to give a helping hand when asked, ....and was given the same in return. Often in a moment of crisis the community would come together to help in anyway one could. With the current conditions things are rough enough just to have a party ......and at the same time we are too often held back and are at the bottom of the totem pole.
It is up to us individually and as a community to hold together and help each other so that we may all succeed, grow, and take root through the gift of music.
I wish you both much success and hope that the original name Loose Joints will be held in the proper perceptive and light. The "ball" is in your court and it's your serve.. smile.gif

David—
Out of curiosity. . .are the parties "Body and Soul," Loose Joints," etc. just as guilty of this transgression?
Also, since it is unlikely that they will change their name now that they have invested in it. . .what do you think that the "Loose Joints" promoters should/could do to lessen the offense?

Posting late because ive been sick and not online.
To david,
Richie and Doug are two of the realest people in NYC when it comes down to motivation. All they care about is having the right vibe, people being comfortable and able to express themselves and enjoy GREAT music that they cant hear anywhere else. Only on a few occasions are parties thrown by people as genuine as this and it always shines through. I knew that was what was behind B&S, I knew it was behind your parties, I have felt it in other smaller parties but NOT many.
To rail on it over its name is very saddening to me, only because I know that the name was chosen completely separately from thoughts about the band. That was like a secondary "in-reference" to those who know and that is all. As mentioned above, many of the great parties used such names and I dont see anyone railing on them.
Anyway, I know where you came from came only out of love for your friends and their identity but please dont assume the worst in a world that always does.
To all the haters and bandwagon jumpers,
- again lets see what you are doing for our music, what are you doing to keep things fresh? Nothing, thats what. Have fun with that because I KNOW we will be having fun with Loose Joints.

somehow i feel guilty now for using the name Love Committee for my "featuring bedroom jocks" party a few years ago. And that party had a lotta hype for about a week. and i made no money.. needless to say, that sucked.
but, I think Doug cleared the air on this one.
Loose | Joints (a not-so-rigid/variety | music). That's how i interpreted it at first and it was confirmed by the promoters of this party. The set that Doug played last night had more quality (soul, R&B, Reggae) danceable music than anything i've heard in a long time... in a club setting that is. my girlfriend who knows nothing about dance music, got up, bopped around, grind my loin, as if no one's watching. and it's this type of parties that will attract those who are not with this dance music scene. so yes, the peeps were loose for a hot minute during his set and the objective was accomplished. to that, i say yay!
I just think that the assumptions of piggy-backing a namesake were made a little too soon. the name change is unnecessary only because the ill intention is not there. They were genuine in doing this thing for fun and I can almost bet my house on it that they will not get rich off this shit. gain notoriety, maybe.. I know this because i know these two well enough. beyond the jokes and clowning, these guys have enough love and respect for this scene or thing we call houzzze to have any serious intentions to capitalise on it.

d </font>
I'm sorry, but that doesn't answer my question. Following your logic to its conclusion should all art/media/cultural products credit their influences? Or does this just apply to situations where you have a personal involvement or a connection? Should Brian de Palma add a line to the credits of his movies saying 'special thanks to Alfred Hitchcock'? I'm not trying to be confrontational, but when you start throwing around the 'I was there, were you' meme and using words like shame and accusing people who I'm sure have the best of intentions of 'poisoning the well' and 'cannibalizing the scene' you are opening yourself up to this kind of scrutiny. I don't know you at all, but I have the utmost respect for you and what you and your indomitable spirit have contributed to the world, and I think you may have stretched this a bit far...peace, domo

DISCLAIMER: Bande A Part is a combination of both Richie C and Peter (a.k.a. Recondo). The name Bande A Part is an homage to Quentin Tarrantino's Band Apart which is an homage to Jean Luc Godard's Bande A Part. Ha, Ha, Ha...
Message from Richie C to David Mancuso:
If you took the time out to read the interview which I linked from my promotional posts you would have then come across where I explain the root of the name of our party. You should be happy that a younger generation is willing to pick up and run with the " torch" while still recognizing those who lit it. Big shout outs to Bang the Party and Body and Soul for doing the same. Thanks to the many people who came out last night despite the cold weather and gave Ron Herrara, Doug Gomez and myself an audience to hear our message. Thanks for all the support and we'll see you next week when we start at our new jump-off time 8 PM to 2 AM. For this special night we will reunite members of different camps by featuring Timmy Richardson of DHP, El Mayimbe of **** and Kai Kuo of Status Kuo, all under one roof!

thanks kuo & nicolas for the kind words!
feel better nicolas!
well i'll tell ya one thing. when i first saw the name, what popped into my mind was geez can't these guys come up with something more original? maybe it's my age, i don't know but that was my first reaction.
now whether it's disrespectful, that's another issue but i think it hit really close to home for david.
now as to whether they payed homage? well in a roundabout vague way. maybe donger should have been more detailed in his response on the bounce fm interview & as david pointed out, maybe a dedication in small print on the flyer, something like "inspired by arthur russell & steve d'aquisto".
"WHAT PROJECT ARE YOU WORKING ON THAT PEOPLE SHOULD KNOW ABOUT?
“Loose Joints”, the weekly Wednesday night party Doug Gomez and I are starting at Guernica on December 3rd. Yes, there is a dancefloor and a soundsystem. The title of the party is obviously an homage to the creative people in NYC of yesteryear. We are linking the ideology of the past, to a whole new era that I predict is going to usher in. Loose Joints is also a way of expressing our loose musical format, anything goes for our DJs and the sounds that will be played during the night. It’s a place for the unheard to be heard. There is so much going on musically that gets ignored in this city. The people that are on top are way too comfortable and don’t take any risks. We want to bring different sounds, crowds and cliques together, like Bam did at the Roxy in the 80s, regardless of race, color or orientation. Loose Joints also means you are going to loosen up your joints and dance!"

Thank you for your positive approach. I hope that when I wake up tommorrow I might feel different re the using of the name LJ's ...but I will and many others will still associate with it as the band, ...where it comes from, and "what role" it has played in our music community.
Recently I came across the loft name being used for a name of a party on a dance music web site. This was in the UK where I also do a Loft party 4 times a year. I wrote to them and asked respectfully to indicate that "this is not associated with the Loft/David Mancuso." They respected my wishes and they were kind enough make the adjustment.
We gave each other space and respect. It was that simple.

You are using the name Loose Joints knowingly that it will be associated with the band and is of the same music community that you are in. You could have done better than that.

Not picking sides or anything, but as far as the "Bang the Party" and "B & S" arguement is concerned: I believe there is a huge difference between naming a party after song and naming it after an artist.
(P.S. there are many different compositions that share the same title).
the real question is why would someone go to this party when you guys have done such a good job of alienating people on purpose?

Also the assocaited Loft information does not include publicly where the address of the party is.
Therefore it is used in respect to a private party.

A very interesting thread, especially to me inasmuchas our party "Chateau Noir", which has avoided mention thusfar, also qualifies equally for this line of criticism.
Although I came up with the name based on its french meaning ("Black House"), I was reminded later of the Wild Pitch record of the same name (Evelyn Jean).
Ironically, I see now that there's a new party in Jersey called "Black House", too.
Is there such a thing as original thought? Has there ever been? Didn't the idea of the original group name "Loose Joints" come from a street vendor's solicitations?
In the end, I believe whole-heartedly that the VIBE, the SOUL and the INTENT are the key elements to consider here, and given the history of those involved, I would definitely give them the benefit of the doubt.
Good luck with your party, guys...

All back-pedaling a side ;) , naming a party "The Who" or "Britney Spears" might get you some phone calls from some peeved lawyers.

I tried today to make a point...sometimes too sharp for my own good. But the bottom line here is that I will learn many things from this, some good and some bad ...all of which will have much meaning. I must always be careful and considerate of others and how my actions will affect them. I hope you will do the same.

All back-pedaling a side ;) , naming a party "The Who" or "Britney Spears" might get you some phone calls from some peeved lawyers. was the name "loose joints" trademarked? i recall that John Davis had BnS trademarked and thereby possessed legal recourse when the use issue comes up. when i was a dork on U***, and came across a party called BnS down in Charlottesville, VA that was going to be a "circuit-esque" party, i actually informed John Davis about it and believe that the event's name had to be changed. anyway, if LJ is currently trademarked, i think there would not be any distinction whether the [product....ie, party, group, song.....] using the name was doing so in a similar/dissimilar form. in that case, all that would matter is if the name was used. [however, i could be wrong on this, i forgot my all my trademark stuff]
there are laws, of course, but there is also the sense of history and who writes and creates history. David and his cohort went through all kind of stuff and as a whole, there's definitely a legacy. from what i understand, Loose Joints is a very legit part of that whole. Russell and D'Acquisto are gone now, right? As a still-active member of that cohort, of course David would stand up for them and their contributions, even if by their namesake. we forget about these things - i'm still confused on the history of the wild pitch parties, the wild pitch label, and the coined term "wild pitch." i'd have to go out of my way to find out about that information. most people won't and that's how things are forgotten and names like Loose Joints are no longer associated with such a seminal musical group.
if the title is to remain, (hey, it's a cool name and again, 95% of the neophytes out there would have no idea of LJ, the group), then maybe a credit line somewhere on the flyer would make this alright. i've never met Richie, and I've met Doug only once, but they seem to be good guys with the right ideals in mind to hopefully breathe life into this aging, and arguably dying, scene. before shutting these guys out, why not go check out what they're doing. a "young" and "old" collaboration may actually do some good.
peace

Good manners never killed anyone. When we each start to act on "our own island" and forget that we really do all "play in the same band" then we will divide and fall apart. There is the correct way to do things and then there is the incorrect way.
Common sense always helps.
d </font>
So would you say the same thing to the promoters of Bang the Party? Should they add a line to their flyers saying 'special thanks to Kid Batchelor and Keith Franklin'? </font>
One should give credit where it is DUE.
I don't know you at all, but I have the utmost respect for you and what you and your indomitable spirit have contributed to the world, and I think you may have stretched this a bit far...peace, domo </font>
Missed your post earlier and just found it. I think your question(s) were covered re the use of the name Loose Joints as it the band's name and is part of the same music community.

Jon Martin is another excellent example of someone who throws a party with the intent that the people coming enjoy themselves fully first and foremost. A slicker host you will not find in NYC.

WHO WOULD YOU CONSIDER YOUR BIGGEST INFLUENCES?
First my mom and family, girlfriend and close friends. Ron Herrera, Brennan Green, Miles Davis, old mixes and re-edits I hear from Tee Scott and Walter Gibbons, Arthur Russell, Patrick Adams and Peter Brown for P&P records, I could go on forever…
