View Full Version : WHY DO YOU DJ?

haven't seen this one in a while
but i'm placing a restriction...'i love this music' is not a valid answer. this is dhp. we all love this music (except for that one guy who loves trance). so even if you love this music, why not just dance, etc...?
so...why do you dj?

As a dancer, i have never fully liked every record every dj i've heard played in a set, except for when David Morales spun at shelter all morning. as a dj you control the entire programming, something you can't have as a dancer.

there is no feeling like making people happy through dancing to the music you love how else can you make several hundred people smile smile.gif

I had no intention on being a DJ when I first started mixing. I just wanted to mix records together like I heard on radio mix shows back in the late 80s...in the privacy of my own home. I got equipment, made tapes, got compliments (friends mean well, but dont always listen to them when they say you are good) and then happened to get a gig.
I love the opportunity for self-expression
I love the fact that people danced to my self-expression
I love the excitement people exhibit when they hear something different and/or new
Now it seems like a way of life. I just do it and can't imagine not doing it.

during the 80s, i grew up listening to farley, frankie, dj rush, terry hunter, pharris thomas, boo williams, ron hardy, etc. on the radio or whatever. i saw how they made people feel. how they redefined youth culture in chicago. i remember parties for teenagers at places like medusas, the blue gargoyle, mendel h.s. and morgan park h.s. i look fondly back on those moments that other djs were responsible for.
i like playing music at home or wherever and recreating how i felt when i first heard the song.
a friend told me that he once went to a party where frankie knuckles played "i'm happy and carefree and i'm gay" and there was all these gay dudes surrounding the dj booth dancing, crying, and basically worshipping frankie. the fact that music can have that kind of therapy in peoples lives is fascinating to me.
i like being responsible for how i feel. if i can help others feel good by doing something that feels good to me, then thats a blessing.
however, everyone doesn't like what i like and that's a blessing too.

Hey Jamie that's as good a reason as any...
I Dj because it's probably one of the most enjoyable things that I have found to do with my spare time. If I could quit my job today and do it full time I would. But t I gotta keep those bills paid.

I find it's the most intense way you connect with music. Mixing creatively is a way of giving back to the music - a chance to express yourself and add to what's already there.
The elation of DJing for a crowd speaks for itself - it's hard not want to be up there when you hear the reaction to DJ.
Also, it's easy to fall into it - you like house, you buy records... it's the logical step.

My Gradmother DJ Granny B out of the tribe of Tieno-Indians in Puerto Rico encouraged me to carry not only the music tridition of "Dancin on the Fire" but to make the cattle dance and make babies I need to play music..lol :D

It's a form of expression. It can be a great way to spread joy around you, or a way to let people see what's inside of you especially if you aren't comfortable expressing and sharing things about yourself in a more conventional manner.
That "something" inside of me that I can't quite put my finger on, just needs to get out.
The Amish community won't let me retire. They've threatend to steal my chickens and milk my goats until their nipples fall off. Plus Amish chicks throwing their bonnets up on stage or in the booth really does it for me. I can't help but wonder what those undercover freaks have under under those long gowns. Anybody got a razor for these beasts?? Not diggin the lace-up boots though, especially if they've got horseshit imbedded in the soles. Pee-you!!!! In New York they sprinkle baby powder on the floor. In Nappannee the farm freaks drag in horseshit and hay. Now THAT"S house!!!! And that's my story for today, kiddies.....JMJ biggrinangel.gif

To play my remixes, edits, and be self serving.
nan just kidding on AFD :D
I DJ-ed over this last short time to get the last of the "mix bug" out of my system...90 more days and I walk away from the DJ booth for good.

how bout "inspiration" in place of "imitation"?
in that case, the dj and his greatness can be one and the same.

For those "moments" where you say to yourself this is the best ****ing job in the world and I am previliged to play this great music for all these wonderful people!
Sounds corny as hell, but that's what does it for me. That and getting the system exactly as you want it and just bugging out on how incredible the records sound.

I got into it becuase I've always been a record collector and saw some of the neighborhood kids doing it and thought to myself "I can do that". 19 years later it has become my job and is still as much fun as it was since day 1.
