View Full Version : To the DJs...what records are you pushing?

GROOVE VICTIM

I rarely hear about DJs pushing records these days and there are so many DJs out there who need their fix of the "latest and greatest". I recall back in the day when a DJ would push a record for 6 months to almost a year until everyone caught on to the gift.

So what cuts are you pushing to your audiences?

Peace

I shan't rest until everybody has at least one copy of "Let No Man Put Asunder" in their crates. Then, and only then, will peace reign in DHP land.

Unfortunately that trust needed between a DJ and their audience to push a new record exsists only in a few places.

It's usually the statf (and the odd client) at the clubs I work at that will ask about a new track.

One weekly gig I do is mostly older music and that's when the trainspotters come out in full force. The music was before their time so they have no idea who these artists are, but want to find out.

Does pushing older music count?

Take for example Herbie Hancock's "Stars in your eyes" that everyone was drooling over a last year.

I believe that if you have the ablity to have your mixes heard in clubs, on the radio, or on the net on a weekly basis, you should push your own agenda so to speak and get the word out on any record that you feel may spark interest. But you must be persistent and push these songs for weeks maybe months at a time to generate a serious buzz.

I remember when "Respect" by Adeva came out, Tony played it like 5 times one night at Zanzibar. A few times, he just kept catching the beginning, "Adeva, I'm home...." He ended that night with "Respect" by Aretha Franklin. Cats were cheering. *sigh*
Meeeeeeemmmmmreeeeeeeeesss....

I'm pushing:

"Do Right" - LeFunken feat. Tyrah - Eclectic
"Someone You Know" Working Underneath feat Shay Bryant (LeFunken Rmx) - Spacekat (early 2004)
"Chase My Blues" (both mixes) - Working Underneath feat. Keith Rivera aka DJ messiah - (unsigned/unreleased)
"Don't Wanna Be Set Free" - Working Underneath feat. Vanita - (unsigned/unreleased)

This question kinda goes back to my thread a few days ago about how through the years, DJs have been getting all of the credit on many projects and the singers, musicians, and songwriters are hardly mentioned within the credits of a 12 inch record. Kim Beechem (sp) recently made a statement similar to this. Tony pushed her record "Trouble" like crazy and it was a bonified hit after a few months.
Masters at Work is notorious for playing sets that consist of most of their own work.

As the group "Working Underneath" what do you consider yourselves, DJs, or producers. What would you guys like to be remembered as?

Peace

As for what i'm pushing... alot of Diaspora because I believe in it, and think too many people are sleeping on the releases.

Freedom Sounds - "Downtown". It's Alex Attias on the Nepenta label. Interesting combination of latin drums and techy sounds. Appeals to a very wide audience. Shit is naaaaaastay!

Markus Enochson - "Feelin' Fine" (Frankie Feliciano remix). A really good producer can take a song you hate and make you like it. This is one of those.

Goapele - "Catch 22" (Ron Trent remix). Is this ever coming out?

I don't know about pushing ie "breaking" records since none of these are necessarily new, but here's what I've been using a lot lately as mediums to push something other than a specific song.

Donnie - Cloud 9 Quentin Harris RMX

It took my Friday night crowd about 4-6 weeks to get used to this song, accept it, and enjoy its peaks and dips as one entire "epic" but now its almost a guaranteed "get em dancing" song and I still have people coming up and asking me what it is, so that's good.

Nick Straker Band - Little Bit of Jazz
MFSB - Love is the Message (Edit)
Manzel - It's Over Now

I've been using these to really push the funk asthetic of house music and because a good number of people at least recognize 1 or 2 of these, so they're good foundation peices for expanding to other interchangeable peices surrounding these.

The Latin Project - Lei Lo Lai

This has been a foundation for me on my Friday nights as I've tried to play more latin-esque stuff.

Restless Soul feat. Maiya James - Peace In My Life

Love this song, almost R&Bish with a nasty bassline and some little accents that are very reminiscient of some 80's joints that most people recognize, they're VERY VERY subtle, but it catches people on a subliminal level.

Raw Silk - Do It To The Music
Northend - Happy Days
Alicia Myers - I Wanna Thank You
Cherrelle - Saturday Love
SOS Band
etc

I've been pushing these early in the evening as a way of opening up the night in a good mood, letting people here a side of house they may not hear very often, but in an environment where it's not necessarily interrupting their pre-conceived notions of what "house" should sound like. Basically, I'm using these to expand their ideas of house a little bit.

There are others, but these are ones I know off the top of my head, or had access to finding online (I'm HORRIBLE at remembering artist/track names reliably)

Peace

I definitely push records when I think they deserve it. I'd say over the last 3 months I've played Rocketship, Elle, Somebody New, Worlds, Strings of Life, Right by Your Side, almost every time. And the thing is, there is only 1 other dj in Philly who plays these cuts, so nobody knows this stuff. I have to check myself everytime I play out, and forget of all I read on the DHP, cause here you would think Rocketship or Cloud 9 or Somebody New was played out, but the people out there have never heard this ish!

At the moment I am also pushing the quirkier sound like Akufen, Dan Bell, etc. cause that stuff needs exposure!

I have a day job, but these would be my recommendations and will be in my bag tonight...

1. Ralphi Rosario - Salsation.

2. Amp Fiddler - Possibilities (Ron Trent Mixes).

3. Nikos - Speaking in Tongues.

4. Sacred Spirits Of Rhythm - Spiritual Life.

5. A Journey to The Dawn - V.A. - Pharoah Sanders, Theresa Records.

I would also add a few classics in there and I want TO hear some late 80's - early 90's tonight, I'm thinking a few Red Zone dubs and definitely:

Shalor - 'I'm in Love'.

Dread Flimstone And The Modern Tone Age Family - 'From The Ghetto'

And some Arthur Baker And The Backbeat Disciples - 'Let There Be Love' - FOR SAMMY ROCK THE LOVE OF DHP!!!!!
