View Full Version : What song made you fall in love with House?

It was 1991, and I heard St. Entienne's "Only Love Can Break Your Heart". I had heard other house songs, but that one made me become a househead forever! http://deephousepage.com/smilies/music765.gif
What about you? :D

Strangely enough, it was "Revolution 909" by Daft Punk.

I guess you want one song, but it's a toss-up between these early tracks:
Blaze WATCHA GONNA DO (do I have the title right?)
Marshall Jefferson HOUSE MUSIC ANTHEM
Mr. Fingers CAN YOU FEEL IT
F. Knuckles/Jamie Principle (I can't remember the title...it came out on both Trax and DJ International, the vinyl versions sounded speeded
up, Larry always played them pitched down)
Two or three others from 86-ish that escape me now
OH, gotta add
Ragtyme I CAN'T STAY AWAY...hell I like that one
even better than Devotion, which is yet another
Byron Stingily mega-classic in my book.
sorry I'm not more coherent right now.

"How Far I Go" - Peter Black (DJ International) 1987
and
"Caught In The Middle" - Juliet Roberts (Cooltempo) 1993

Music Is The Key by JM Silk - 1985
Mystery Of Love by Fingers Inc. - 1986
You Don't Know by Serious Intention(Anthony and the Camp)- 1985
Ma Foom Bey by Cultural Vibe - 1985

Temple University (Philly) used to play house music on Saturday nights. with strict parents who did not let me go out on Saturday nights, when i found that radio station, every weekend i was sitting in front of the radio with my dad's headphones on jamming, blasting house in my ears http://deephousepage.com/smilies/music765.gif
the other song that i really used to feel was "Special" -- not sure of the artist. the song came out around '91. forgive me, i am one of those people who can't tell you artists but can sing the all the words to the song ;) anyone remember it?
So Special by Blaze?
or Love so Special by Ceybil?
Mike Johnson

The track that snagged me was J.M. Silk's "Music Is The Key." The track that reeled me in was "House Music Anthem" Marshall Jefferson.

I really want to find that record. I am sitting here singing it to myself, and trying to get past "so speciallllll" and remember some of the other lyrics so maybe we can identify which one it is, ha ha!

i've heard house music since it's early heydays but i wasn't fully sold until years later when SammyRock pulled out Susan Clarke's "Deeper" and that's when it hit me! i've heard a bit of it before on a John Robinson mix but that moment cemented a new musical love affair that has not ceased in me. graemlins/1luvu.gif

Orbital's Halcyon
I had listened to house music before, but I had never really HEARD the music, it was always just DOOMP DOOMP DOOMP DOOMP to me...I am sure that you've all heard that description about house before. There was just something about the progression of that track that really allowed me to "hear" house for the first time. After that track I was able to listen to the music again with a different ear.
The funny bit about the story was that I had never heard a DJ mixing songs together before. I was laying in bed, and was thinking to myself, "This is the longest song I have ever heard...I know I haven't heard it stop yet...but it keeps changing, what's going on!?!" Halcyon was one of the tracks they played that night. I was actually taping the show, and I had the tape for about 5 or 6 years afterwards, but its gone now.

It was not one particular song for me, it was hearing house music well-played for the first time at the 1992 WMC, one of the first (maybe the very first) Magic Sessions.
Am just a baby so mine would have to be either...
DJ Sneak - You cant hide from your bud

i dont think there was one particular soung for me but i can remember when i was at high school this FUNNY sounding but Cool music started coming on the radio.I had also started attending discos for younger people in the youth club and they always played stuff like black box,s-express,sueno latino and the odd chicago thing like the house music anthem.i used to make up tapes and take them to school with me on my personal stereo.
i guess it wasnt just one song but a handful of things that had that sound and now after all this time im still making those tape up the only difference is im using turntables now lol!!

Logic - the warning - strictly rhythm
I was on holiday in Canada (91/92?) and we jumped some girlies in a car at the lights and they drove to some remote spot and the warning was playing on the stereo, the music matched the spooky atmosphere....nothing happened tho' incase you're wondering!

If I had to pick one song, it would have to be Love & Happiness.
I wasn't really into house, but we went to this house club, it was a huge place (held 1500-2000 people) and it was packed.
Hot girls, some hardcore house dancers and bboys getting loose in some of the most amazing cyphers I'd ever seen.
There were also quite a few asian and latin gangs up in that peice and it got rowdy more than a few times a night. People are occasionally throwing blows, acting a fool etc, but then this song comes on, the DJ's working it and EVERYONE, thugs and all are jumping up and down, hands in the air, singing ...
LOVE AND HAPPINESS....
OWWWW LOVE AND HAPPINESS....
.. and in that one moment, it hit me.
Peace

not sure if it was just one song. It was more like the sound of house itself. At the time I discovered it, down here in miami, it was at a club called "scratch" on south beach, before it was the zoo it is now. the tracks they were bangin then were:
can you party
I'll house you
work it to the bone
move your body
I want you
big fun
make my body rock
the party
etc...
this whole sound was mind blowing, specially when all you heard down here was freestyle or bass at that time. once I heard this sound in that dark ass warehouse... I was hooked... had plenty of fake id's taked away from me in the name of house!
damn I'm old...

"Break for Love" back in my college days, we opened for Chris Rock, dancing to "Moments of Love" that we mixed into "Break for Love". we did some moves with chairs, teased the audience good with "Moments.." and had them on their feet when "Break for Love" came on. even those who weren't househeads were loving it smile.gif Chris had to be happy because the audience was hyped when he came on --- we got a standing ovation, he didn't ;) this was also in 1995, he was still Pookie back then! icon_rofl.gif anyway, house music is infectious like that smile.gif

I associate two records in particular with starting to go to clubs and being into something that while related to the disco of my childhood was vibrant, alive and evolving. Those two records were "Donnie" by the It and "Nobody's Business" by Billie. There are other records that were major forces in my transformation from goody-two-shoes to clubhead, but these two were extra-special.

immigrants )these party were just considerated as
a music for junkie and gay .The freaky head of

Gypsy Woman - Crystal Waters - "Lada Dee Lada Daaa!"
What is Love - Deeelite - WHAT IS LOVE???????
Groove is in the HEart - Deeelite
Voodoo Ray - Guy called Gerald - "ooooh ooooh hhoooooo, aaaahhh hah hah, yeah yeah! Voodoo Ray!"
Cubik - 808 State -- The way we all came together in Axis when this song started, ooooooooh shit!
Pump up the Jam - technotronic --> the first time i thought to myself "this is an example for this genre that i'm not old enough to experience in the clubs, "house" . "
The first time I heard house was when I was 16. The dj dropped Lil Louis "French Kiss" and at the time a lot of things started to make sense out there on the dancefloor.
It was a revelation because in Houston the trend was industrial music. I was too young to get into the clubs where proper acid house was being played.
Other seminal tracks for me were Deee Lite "What Is Love?" Inner City "Good Life" and Jungle Bros "I'll House You." Also some notable albums were 808 State(the one with Pacific), Primal Scream Screamadelica, and the first dj LP I ever bought, "Dance Music With Bleeps"(Various Artists from Nettwerk Records circa 1990).
