Piggbacking off of PHC's thread, do you drink or smoke (cigs, weed) heavily around yours or other kids? We attended a gathering yesterday that included kids and parents, and I was surprised to see some of the parents (mainly, the fathers...most of the moms were on kid patrol) getting bubbly and smoking squares in front of their kids. I know our parents used to roll like that, but didn't expect to see that kind of partying 'round the kiddies. Guess I thought we were too new agey (and/or still have bad memories from our parents' excesses) for that.

I have no problem with a bit of wine or some cocktails, but how much is too much? Or, is anything too much?

Like u said a couple drinks in a social setting doesnt seem bad around children. But you got parents who smoke weed(i know a lady who sends her son to the store for her dutches)drink forties and have sex around their kids.I would think those acts sends the child a certain message.

Yes, I will have a glass of wine/smoke in my daughters presence and I shamefully accept her admonishments about the cigarettes . . .

Living in europe is one thing. But there is no reason a mother should send her son to the store to get her blunts.Roll the blunt in the house with her boyfriend and sleep with her boyfriend on one cot while the son is on another cot in a studio apartment.

Not being judgmental but imagine your precious lil one with a cigarette in her mouth everytime you smoke around her. I quit smoking with the help of a guardian angel (let me tell you, much harder than quitting drugs), but my ex kept smoking around her. She (my lil one) now smokes and is having a hard time giving it up. :frown:

Remember she's smoking with you just by breathing.

Peace.

growing up as a teen, i had friends parents that drank, smoked weed, walked around naked in front of any and everybody, shit was hilarious, of course made for a quite liberal environment for all of us

And the sad thing is thats normal for some folks. When we were kids we always saw our parents have one or two at a cookoutetc.Dad always would have a cold on while watching the game.I get what DG is saying some people really put it away in front of their kids. There is nothing worse than a child seeing his/her parents pissy drunk.Mofo's get drunker than cooter brown in front of their kids.

interesting, i didn't keep alcohol in the house & didn't smoke around them. they're legal so thinking about it, when they're around me, they don't smoke cigarettes and has never drank alcohol in my presence, i believe they would feel funny if they drank alcohol in front of me at any age & would probably ask permission.

Things are much different than when we were young. kids find out about drugs and alcohol from school and television, so with the "awareness" thing going on, I would say not a good idea. I personally don't get fucked up around my kid.

As a kid it used to be funny watching adults get drunk at family functions, that was pure entertainment especially when the non-drinking wives would get mad at their drunk husbands!

Yeah you noticed that also. That seemed to be a constant on black sitcoms of the seventies. The wife would always have to put her drunken husband in his place.

I never saw my parents drunk and although my Dad smoked cigs around me he and my Mom never smoked weed around me. I had no clue they smoked weed until I found a roach in an ashtray when I was about 14 and Mom had to 'fess up. As far as drunk relatives, yeah I saw that at a young age but drunks used to terrify me so I generally hauled ass when they were around. My great uncle was the greatest PSA anyone could ever ask for, he woke up drinking and went to bed drinking and inbetween he could be the meanest SOB you ever wanted to meet. If he was in-town I wasn't. To this day, I avoid sloppy, belligerent, drunks because I can't handle the personality changes.

We haven't talked about sex around the kids in a thread yet, such a thread could be creepy.

We do need to show more discipline around the kids, some stuff has gotten totally out of hand.

I will have a few drink around my kids. I quit smoking shortly after my kids were born. A may have a square or two when I am out with the fellas.

As long as a person dosen't get sloppy drunk around their kids, or they don't have to drive, having a few should be fine.

I drink and smoke Cigars(out in my garage or the backyard patio) in front of my children but I never drive. My wife will sit with me and drink her wine.

I don't see nothing wrong with it but then that is my family and all familes are different and have different types of socializations.

Good point and I guess these are lessons learned by example. I guess everyone had that drunk uncle growing up. Kids are more aware of what is going on around them these days it would seem. When we grew up cigs in a car with kids was a normal thing even though we as kids hated it and had no say so. I saw someone who didn't have kids in the car, but a big child seat in the middle and all I could think about was the poor kid who will be sitting there in that funky ass seat that smells like her cigs. :jpshakehead:

I don't do it.

But my family elders used to drink, smoke, play spades, cheat, and cuss all the time, with an occasional knife-pullout for cheatin'!
