So you telling me that the Warehouse wasn't on Indiana somewhere? Don't be trying to front me off, I am not a "has been" a "hope so" or an "Imaginary" DJ. I don't give no hell! Besides if I start back dj'ing, I'll have more credentials just standing outside of clubs than alot of folk and I don't have to drop names. Alot of people know me and don't realize that Aretha is DiscoLady. I just got it like that :tongueout:

I don't know why folk here act like The Playground, Rink Zone & Bismark were NOT the spots other than the Original Music Box?
Glenwood w/ JMJ just didn't exist either I guess?
The Gallery on 14th & Michigan was hot (Early 1980's). I used to Open for Larry Williams (the man who would have been the DJ at the musicbox instead of Ron Hardy) if it were not creative differences between He and Robert Williams.
The Penthouse is All Forgot About.
A Popular dance called the 69 came from The Penthouse, Dj Wayne Williams knows the Guy name that made it up.
What about Wayne & Robert (a.k.a. Batman) in the Black Stationwagon a.k.a. Bat Mobile?
What about Ron Hardy being the only DJ that could play The Dancer by Stanley Clarke and make it work?
What about the Twins Kent & Kerry (who were are all the parties and still kick it out today)
What about Disco Toni Shelton, DJ Lori Branch & DJ lady Linda of The Waterworks on Rush & Walton (across from Sweetwaters) Back in the day?
This thread look like house started with Move Your Body to me.
What About Your Love (which was played on Tape because it was not on wax).
How Tyree Cooper gonna get mentioned without Fast Eddie, Mr. Lee, Mike Dunn all in the same wop?
What's the most OBSCURE and still a hit today House track? It's Video Crash by Lil Louis, that don't get mentioned.
Here is a little known fact as of French Kiss....The Female sounding like she is having a orgasim at the slow break is Buffy. Chip E recordered her sounding sexual for a track that he never made. I used to have that tape and played it over tracks at The Bitter End. I sure wish I still had it because that would really be a Aw Damn.
Get off the HOUSE was made at the Box trip because Farley & I were calling our DJ thang House before the Music Box opened.
I am Tyree Cooper & Mike Dunn FIRST DJ Teacher.
Please don't think I am trying to make this about me - I am only filling in the blanks that some in House Circles wanna believe do not exist.
The biggest event of the 80's was The Rocky Horror Picture Show Party @ Sauers. The entire West, South & East side kids filled the place to the point is was no dance room. Farley Had All The South & East Side there & Terrible Ted had whole side there. That was Pre WBMX & Playground days.
There are a million versions of what the real deal is on House & Chicago, but to get the WHOLE story - you gotta to go to them who were there and are willing to mention the others without being self serving / still on that early 80's click s*&t.
(ok all fixed I think?)

Nan and trust............I don't get mad like I used to some years back. The truth has been said as of me by known DJ's and that got rid of the DHP "know it all's" that nobody knew prior to DHP that talked S*&T about me or called me a lier.

You are Chicago's version of Mike Barnes, who I think should also write a book about the NYC scene.

"I Fear The Night"
History behind that song.
Tyree sister did the vocals....8 months with child at the time.
If you listen to the song, you will hear the edit that make the song off beat for any song being mixed with it.
Once she sang her last verse and the beat is mainly toms - The Bass & Snare comes in on a 1 - 3 beat and not on the 2 - 4 beat. It was most def a bad edit but for us who knew that, we would cue up whatever song we planned to play with it via the snare drum and not cue off the bass drum / 2 - 4 beat and the mix would go fine.
If you try to mix a track with that song, it will be off beat once the foundation track starts to play again.
Maybe I should write a book, sure will be far more truthful / fact based than Jessy Saunders book. Other non DJ party goers will note the facts that are stated along with the DJ's names they knew that didn't get to the bigtime / Headline status but did have a loyal following.
The one reason Farley & I got pass the click wall (dispite the fact that we went to what was considered a Ghetto High School by them in the popular school click) was....our turntable skills were way above all the rest of the Name Dj's with the exception of Steve "Silk" Hurley (whom was the Clicks most SKILLED DJ) other than that, there was no comp for us in the area of Turntablism in Chicago at that time. Wining the DJ battle against Steve at Sauers (a battle that some on DHP say never happened) left promoters wanting Farley & I to Battle but that Battle never happened.
It was rumored that he did not want to loose to me and as hard as I worked to break beyond the (Click Wall) and get known back then, a loss to Farley would had been my end!!!
Consider that - He was on WBMX herd by Millions, I was on WKKC herd by Hundreds, His club was bigger, even as of Cars...I had a Pontiac Sunbird, He had a Buick Skylark...we kinda was going the same way but he was doing it so much Bigger than I was.
I remember when Farley played at The Rainbow and Afrika Bambaataa did a cameo (this was shortly before Jessy Velez died) Afrika was Playing a song Cavern / Optimo by Liquid Liquid (the one sampled for White Lines) anywho, he was scratching and back cueing the beginning of that song then slamed in Planet Rock and was doing his thing.
Farley and I were like (uhh, you think you can do that ON beat???) [Chicago scratch / back cue style was fast but ON BEAT]
Farley went into booth, got two copies of Zulu by The Quick, and wore that s*&t out!
Damn, the good old days.

I started kicking it back in the eighties and I remember some of the spots Leonard mentioned but I'm late on several. I will say that back in the Rink Zone days, Leonard and the original Lil' John (as far as I'm concerned) turned us on to all kinds of hot music. The Rink and The Playground/Candy Store prepared many of us for The Box and Plant. In fact, many of the heads who started going to see Ron and Frankie on a regular got their first taste at The Rink. I remember all of the old dance clubs; Bostitch, Americans, Passion, Desire, Divine, Punk, Military, etc and how everybody dropped the groups all at once because "House ain't about dat group shit." Now, I don't know everything and as I get older, things get fuzzier and fuzzier but Leonard will always have my respect and if that's ballwashing, I don't give a damn. I still run across old records with his name written in black ink over the titles in dj collections all over the city. :respent:

:respent:
It's good that someone on DHP was THERE and not going on what they HERD from others whom wish to discount the Southside (Mailly where I played) as non existant.
There was a thought to be club called House but...it was not a club at all. They were the first people at the Rink Zone who broke away from the Dance Clubs and went strictly House.
I hope over time I am contacted by someone that has a photo of Ron Hardy & I from the party we did @ The Rink Zone where it re-opened as The Wall when 326 The Underground was in Full effect. Maybe someone will find a photo or flyer and email it to me like the Rink Zone crowd shot photo.

More Blank Filling:
American Boys & Girls. The Original first Female in that club, Lisa Slaughter... was killed when the Bulls won that first Jordan Championship in the 90's.
The headlines read, Bulls Win, 3 hurt & 1 Killed. That was Lisa, she was hit by a stray bullet while trying to get her kids in the house.
Carl of Bostich was killed also, I don't know all the details.
I did have a packed house every weekend, I just wish the lights were on or the flash were better on the camera so more people could be seen. It's sad that todays young adults can't have these many people in on club without a brawl breaking out. Anyone that can put names to the faces they know in the photo below would really be a great thing. If it were not for them there would had been no me.

Leonard do you remember the Loft or the Blue gargoyle and a DJ named Ben Perez and dancer and promoter Arthur Bailey and Lano Brazil not to mention the Tree of Life and the Savoy on 87st all these spots and people along with The Chosen Few were before Farley steve silk and Frankie before the warehouse music box and playground One of the main proponents of this house music scene taking off were the Dance Groups that performed at the parties we Dj at .My freshman year i went to Mendel HS which was the party school of Chicago .My best friend Bob Peters was in a dance group called the Doctors they were unbelievable.Other high schools started getting competing dance groups like Lindbloom HS and some of the names of other groups were the Operators Men in High Rank and the coittiers. These groups would come to these house parties and throw down sometimes battling each other right on the spot. After each party the whole next week people would talk about who they thought won and when would the next house party be.That my friend really fueled the house music scene.I dont know Leonard if that was before your time or not but if it wasnt i would like you to add on.

I remember Ben Perez....ain't herd his name in years, Damn!!!!!
Lets go back some mange....
Remember CJ the DJ?
He was the first DJ I saw who stuff was in a flight case, this was at a party at a mini mansion off 83rd street (down from Simeon High School...i'm talking 1980)
He wasent the best DJ but he had a Bad Set up.
Had a Van and everything!
Remind me of when I used to Dream of Owning Some 1200's.
First Impressions???
I met Batman at First Impressions before Sauers was the Spot, he gave my crew a ride to Halsted street Bus Stop once whe the party was over, it was Freezing that night too. We were trying to walk from Michigan to Halsted and get the Bus.
Some of the pre 79 kicking it I can't account for, I was not allowed to attent parties until I was 16, moms was not having it and I was to chicken to sneak out.
As of the Loft, it closed and became the Gallery and the party spot was First Impressions after that, Herb Kent Plugged that Spot Hard - talking about us doing the PoGo untill we got the Red Eye...LOL.
As of the Penthouse (Above Mr. Sub on 12th & Halsted) what ever happened to Lenell Wills? He was cool.
I wish Hans was on here to talk about the Rink Zone / Playground POSTER WARS! Boy did we laugh about that when I saw him at The Attic on night....Damn the memories!!!
Man, when there was a party at The Playground, Rinkzone, Sauers on the same weekend.....the promotional poster wars were in effect.
Damn we had it good as teenagers!!!!!
It's always good when you or Alan pop on a Back In The Day type thread, especially when all the blanks are getting filled in. If it were not for ya'll few, the doubters (some whom were too young to even be on the scene) would still be here talking crap as of my statement.
There is another spot besided the Loft that I recall Andre spinning at but the name escapes me.
I wonder what ever happen to a girl I used to date name Wendy when I attened Bowen? I bounced after the 81 home coming dance when that football player got shot. Tony Hatchett was the DJ that night if I am not mistaken. Speaking of Tony...He and I never Officially met yet. What the hell is up with that?
I got some serious catching up to do once I leave Iraq this time.

2) What were 5 of the most played "jack tracks" of the 90's
Where there "jack tracks" made in the 90's? I thought the jack era was more 86-88. When I think on 90's, I think about Dance Mania and Relief.

History behind that song.
Tyree sister did the vocals....8 months with child at the time.
If you listen to the song, you will hear the edit that make the song off beat for any song being mixed with.
Now heres THE story behind "I fear the night"..........
What LRR said was correct, another part of the history is when Tyree did the track, he had it in the 808 all wrong and there was no break. I took the machine home, reprogramed the whole track and put the break in it. I still have the track with no vocals. Tyree did the bad edit on record and Rocky Jones added that fucked-up ass reverb on the claps that none of us wanted. - FACT

Most have no idea. Same as in life, You have...HISTORY, HERSTORY and THE STORY. - JMO
Lono Brazil is still around, although I think he might live in NYC now - saw him at a Frankie party a couple of years ago, and I think he did a an event at Sonotheque a while back.
CJ the DJ had a fancy setup (for that time), but like Leonard said, wasn't much of a DJ.......JMJ

Right, Leonard. First Impressions was on 13th & Michigan, right across the street from what became the Playground. "Disco Toni" Shelton was very much a fixture at the Loft and many of the other spots mentioned. Other ever-present house honeys back then were Aisha Mays and Helen Bailey.
