Looking to learn about more Zouk and that hot dance music coming out of Zaire/Congo whose name, I don't remember, except it has an unusual consinant combination for the first 2 or 3 letters.
And hell, I know about Afrobeat and Highlife, as I have a lot, but I'm always looking to know more on that too, as I don't remember seeing any websites on it.

Christian:
Please share with me what you learn about Zouk. If you find any clubs in DC playing it, let me know as Delphine loves it.
GOod to see you at the Sanctuary Saturday!

Mark - This new club, Izora, I went to Sat night before Cheryl's Bday party there, Sunday. It's less than a mile down the road from me. This place has just opened, and it was PACKED! I was the only american there. Zouk zouk zouk. It's on EWest highway.
Also, Zanzibar on the waterfront, Ascot, and The Diplomat in DC.

Thanks for the links! If there are any more, I'd appreciate!
Sancuary was cool. I literally woke up at 3 after putting my little one down at 9:30. When I woke up, I decided to do the grocery shopping. I got home at 6.
Lingala music is amazing ... if you've ever heard it or seen it performed (not just the shoddy music videos with 4-5 girls shaking their azzes, which I have occasionally seen on local cable stations here --- usually on saturday mornings), it is something to be experienced. I love the melodious shout-sing lilt of the lead singer, the energetic call-and-response with the rest of the band, and the soaring steel guitar licks. Some of my favorites are Kofi Olomide, J.P. Mpiana of Wenge Musica (now broken into several musical collectives) and of course the man himself Papa Wemba. Every year a new style becomes the rage and from the east to the west (in a country that is half the size of europe) and is usually characterized by a key word. One year it was "ekibindankoye" which translated by my Congolese brother means "tiger's testicles". There are also plenty of shout-outs, you can hear them calling out "saddam hussein" (the nickname for Mobutu's tyrannical son) and some of the other sapeurs (fashionistas) in the communities at home and abroad (mostly in Paris).
When i was there it was Ndombolo by Wenge Musica.
I'm sure some of the French heads can enlighten.
This music means so much to a people that has been subjected to so much for so many years, I only wish I could understand what was being said.
