Bougie Restaurant "Brawta" on Atlantic and Hoyt??? You must get "Danny & Peppers Jerk Chicken..."Brawta" has the best oxtails and really good steam fish, however, if you are hungry, order to go...the sit down portions are too f'ing small.
Nio's I'm not too keen on.
..if you want some really good and big Roti, there is a place on Nostrand Ave between Atlantic and Pacific, on the right hand side of the street(Nostrand is one way) that is off the hook.
Gloria's(they have about 4) on Nostrand before you get to Empire(on the corner) is no joke for the Rotis....real authentic.
Near Prospect and near Danny and Peppers, you have Gordon's on Flatbush at the corner of Parkside....good plates....

I have found so much of the Jerk chicken in NY to be fairly un-spicy compared to JA. I rarely get out to Nostrand, though. I suppose I gotta go deeper for the real deal.

I literally got off the plane this weekend and made for Gloria's, I was already missin' Negril and it was only 5 hours since I had left! Brooklyn is the best for JA food and they stay open LATE, good thing for us heads who never see the light of day :D

I know it's a chain, but I missed that Golden Krust that used to be on Chambers Street. Loved their jerk chicken. A victim of 9/11/2001.
My alltime party spot for spicy hot jerk chicken used to be Peppers, before it closed (used to be on Leonard Street and Broadway).
Otherwise, you have to go to Brooklyn for some JAM food. Peace.

other really good spots in Brooklyn....
Ali's Roti shop on Fulton Street just pass Nostrand Ave....extremely clean, very spiritual, they don't mix their meats with the veges...vegetarians should love this place.
JimboJean on Church Ave betw. Flatbush and Bedford Ave....the soups are to die for...don't expect any award winning customer service, you may even get a dirty look if you are lucky.
Sally's on Ralph Ave. between Foster and Farragut....a little haul from the city, but well worth it...a beautiful place to take the family and sit....the breakfast(Jamaican) are just out of this world...a great place for the hungry because they pile it on....exceptional customer service.
The Food Bowl on Ave A between Remsen and 92st....young guys who have been doing the business for close to ten years....the best curry goat and beef soup on the planet...you know it's good when you can't find parking and the place is packed at 12 noon.
Miguels....a little hole in the wall place, behind Brookdale Hospital, one block away from where Church Ave ends....not for the faint-hearted, must walk with your Satday night special late at night, or act like you got one.....some of the most authentic yaad style(that's "Jamaican" for y'all who are not in the know) food away from yaad.
Yummy's...Rockaway Parkway and Glenwood Road...last stop on the L train...really good oxtail and soups. You either got to live waaaaay out here or you just love the food that much. There is another restaurant in the opposite direction(name slips me) next to the parking lot that serves the best oxtail and the best rice and peas.....make you wanna slap your in-laws.
Best Jerk Chicken : Danny and Peppers(open 24 hours...rush hours 2am to 5am)...dah f'ing best!!
Best Fried Fish(escovitch style): Danny and Peppers...
Best Roti: The place I mentioned on Nostrand Ave at Pacific, then a tie between Gloria's and Ali's.
Best Oxtail: tie between Brawta and the restaurant on Rockaway Parkway and then Gordan's on Flatbush.
Best Curry Goat: The Food Bowl
Soups: first: Yummy's, second: Miguel's Hole in the wall, third: Food Bowl 4th: JimboJean
....as you can see, I eat out....
....oh, if somebody even try and mention Negril or Caribe, shut dah fack up....the cooks there couldn't even wash pots or take out the garbage at these other joints.

...do a search on google or yahoo....it's an oversize meat filled, vege filled, or potato & chick peas filled wrap....but it's not a wrap....the art of the dish is in the making of the "wrap".

Take it from a real Flatbush raised Trini, Lil Ray knows what "Dah Feck" he's talkin bout. Those spots in the city are on some over-priced, cute portion nonsense. They got nothing on dem rude-bwoy cooks in BK. I used to live on Clarkson and Flatbush. After our Steel Drum practice sessions it was straight to Danny and Peppers for the jerk!!!. Also those boomin' speakers playin Reggae music outside in the front. And the nice sights on a hot Summer Afternoon. (minus the cattle crossings mentioned on a previous thread). Lil Ray, very informative and true.

Awwwww Ray you know "de bes spot inna yaad" is not in Negril but anywhere around it!!! Pile into the 50J route taxi with my brethren to Lucea, Sav, Green Island, Sheffield you name it and we're on papa!!! graemlins/grinyes.gif Portions are definitely bigger in BK, folks in the US just eat more, we are very spoiled...
If you are in the city and in a pinch you can hit the truck right outside of Port Authority, usually in front of Modell's on 42nd or if you are downtown, the truck behind Water Street midway between the ferry and South St. Seaport, the lines can get pretty long at lunchtime. Brooklyn rules when it come to de yaaadiiie food mon!
