View Full Version : WEIRD GIG: tonight I'm DJing in a Pakistani Deli that used to be an AL-QUAIDA CELL

This guy I know just took over the lease of this Pakistani Deli in Hell's Kitchen. His landlord said that the former owners and employees had just dissapeared one day about two months ago and they never came back.
When this guy got in the place, he found that they had left everything behind. And I mean everything . Both cash registers were still filled with money. The ovens were still on. Two safes were left behind. There was food and stuff everywhere. Down in the basement there was a prayer room with a whole lot of literature and a big poster of the World Trade Center. He called the FBI and they're fingerprinting the place today.
He's opening it as a bar tonight and calling it THE CELL and I'm DJing. I kid you not. He's left the entire place exactly how it was. He's just putting a bar behind the deli counter, which is kinda funny since there are signs forbidding alcohol everywhere.
Nobody knows what happened to the owners or staff. The theory is either they all got arrested by the FBI, or they got some kind of warning and had to dissapear immediately. Only in New York folks...

LOL! No. I think that dude was on the upper West side. He used to have a stand in Soho and the soup is really really good.

The soup Nazi on Seinfeld is based on an actual guy who is notoriously rude but has amazing soup. I doubt if he ever got a dime from that show, though.

BTW, the music is gonna be all over the place. Not gonna be a very gospel-house friendly crowd...More like Nirvana to Kool G Rap to Prince kinda scene. Should be interesting.

cool story. i hope they caught those guys. good luck
Many Pakistani people whose American visas ran out have left the NYC region and are trying to cross the border into Canada, sans possessions, because they fear deportation. Most of them are held up in refugee camps near the border because the canadians cannot accomodate them; many are arrested by INS agents as soon as the Canadians reject them.
You should know better than to call them al-qaeda simply because they are pakistanis and because they left without taking their things. They may have just been hard working people who seek nothing better than a life without fear, which they could expect if they returned to Pakistan, and ignorance, which they would face if they stayed in NY.

The party was ggggggggggreat! I played just about the most diverse 6-hour set that I've ever done, playing everything from Metro Area to Nirvana to Eric B to Iggy Pop to Janes Addiction to Harold Melvin to Steve Miller to Archie Bell to Booker T to Led Zeppelin, etc. Everyone was bugging out on the whole vibe of the place and I kept people dancing all night so I did my job. I was waiting for the cops to bust it up but they never showed. The crowd was very mixed. Lots and lots of my friends and all kinds of Hell's Kitchen locals and I even saw Ed Koch!
P.S. to Ruse's comment above: I meant no offense to Pakistani people and I am fully aware of the situation with Pakistanis and many others fleeing the country rather than registering. I put the Al-Quaida thing in there simply because that's the spin we were putting on the party - while being straightforwrad with folks that it was just the landlord's theory.
An Indonesian friend of mine taht was at the party told me that, not only did he have to register with the government, he also has to notify them when he wants to leave the country and he is only allowed to leave from 2 airports. Crazy.

Hi Julian
I am glad to hear about the success of your gig.
If it is true that they were al-Qaeda, i hope they are hunted down in their tracks and 'dealt with'.
Most likely, they were also victims of 9-11. After all, out of the 21 hijackers (incl. Moussaoui), I dont think any were Pakistani; neither were Lindh, Padilla, Binalshibh or Sheikh Muhammad (tho the latter 2 were found in Pakistan).
Incidentally, I have no reason to defend Pakistanis. I am part Indian, and we have suffered greatly from attacks by Pakistani terror groups. But in post 9-11 America, all South Asians are united by the color of our skin. As they say, "Brown is the new Black".
peace

peace [/QB]The soup nazi is on W. 55th St. Between Broadway & 8th Ave. Almost on the corner of 8th. Which is part of Hell's Kitchen only in geography, not in reputation.
