IIRC there was a furor over a white city councillor somewhere in the U.S. using this word during a meeting. He wound up apologizing profusely to his fellow councillors of color...

but, for real, is niggardly in use as widely as faggot? has it changed? i don't think so.
It's obsolete in the extreme and mostly pops up in lit classes or on SATs...

but the issue of context: if it is in a piece written in 1609, what's the likely meaning? Cheap!

Tha's all...

The question is did the other word exist then? i don't know the answer, but my guess is no. Either way though it is a root not a coincedence. So the word in my mind and really any ones is not just niggardly; when they use it or read it or hear it.

It <i>is</i> a coincidence. Do "deer" and "dear" share the same root because they're homophones? Should we ban the use of "jewelry", "snigger", "chink in the armor"?

I fully understand the problem in the case of words like "blackguard" or "gypped", btw.

I think in this case the word and meaning stayed the same but, the object (people?) it is used to described, has changed.

lol ...how little you know of me. darling while you dream of staying seven to a room at WMC in Miami and complaining about $18 a shot hennessys and $10 beers, I'm flying 1st class to Jamaica or to David Mancuso's Loft party in NYC with a bottle of Imperial Nectar in tow. Why? Because I don't work in the type of establishments you and your mama's basement balla cohorts frequent leaving niggardly tips.

c'mon bruh, give me a double for a dollar more. no? then f*** yo tip then.
real ballers don't make statements like "how you gonna ask for 15% and the Lord only wants 10." I do Bottle service baby and bartend for the jet set. Where the cheapest bottles start at $200 and the tips are phenomenal. When you get to that level love PM me for a reservation -- 2 bottle minimum. In the meantime, the Chardonnay Shack got a sale on Hennessy 2 bottles for $50. See you at the Chosen Few Picnic, Bill Gates? Or is Greyhound booked up that weekend.

Points for Chuck on that one!!!

Went and looked for the history of the word...
usually the etmology for the origin of the word that ya'll dislike so much is through Spanish = negro...

but this word has a different origin. Remember, English is a bastard language, snatchin' terms from everywhere it possibly can...

<dl><dt class="highlight">niggard (http://www.etymonline.com/index.php?term=niggard) http://www.etymonline.com/graphics/dictionary.gif (http://dictionary.reference.com/search?q=niggard)</dt><dd class="highlight">1366, nygart, of uncertain origin. The suffix suggests Fr. origin (cf. dastard), but the root word is probably related to O.N. hnøggr "stingy," from P.Gmc. *khnauwjaz (cf. Swed. njugg "close, careful," Ger. genau "precise, exact"), and to O.E. hneaw "stingy, niggardly," which did not survive in M.E.</dd></dl>I'd say that the conjecture of a link between the two words is merely that...and not very convincing at all...

The english lanuage is wonderful. Etymology sez words can be broken down by suffixes and stuff: Cardio = Heart Roman - Ped = Foot Greek. Shakespeare wrote centuries ago and to take offense at a simple word is ridiculous. Political correctness is a recent phenomena. Way Back in da Day,
words like "niggardly" were not confrontational.

Get real? The definition has merit. Like somebody ALREADY said, Niggardly people (ain't gotta be of color) DON'T tip. and that's just the tip of the iceburg.

No offense here.

The N word and the word Niggardly are not from the same origin.

"1366, nygart, of uncertain origin. The suffix suggests Fr. origin (cf. dastard), but the root word is probably related to O.N. hnøggr "stingy," from P.Gmc. *khnauwjaz (cf. Swed. njugg "close, careful," Ger. genau "precise, exact"), and to O.E. hneaw "stingy, niggardly," which did not survive in M.E."

Although origin of nygart is unknown it is of a Teutonic origin which predates the Norman conquest where words of Romantic origin would be absorbed by English and those are of a French derivative. Negre would be the French for Spanish, Portuguese negro, but notice how it ties better with the older Teutonic words which have nothing to do with Black folks that don’t tip worth a shit.

This coincides with its use in early Modern English never being attributed to Africans but solely Europeans. If Shakespeare wanted to attribute a negative connotation to folks by equating them with Africans he used the word Ethiope (and Middle English I believe). Which does not necessarily mean Shakespeare was a racist but that it was common in the early part of the Modern English speaking culture to do so. Either way, Niggardly is not the same as that other wordy rapping hood.

Hi Paula:biggrin:

hi mama! you crazy lol. no honestly I find etymology fascinating. My mom would always tell us about words and surnames and their origins from different languages. Dad studied several languages so it was always discussed in the house. Lo and be hold, i just found the tip thing in the thread  -- it's just a reflex. ever since my bar buddies found that youtube clip, it's been fun just posting it randomly.

My dad had a dictionary of slang and euphamisms and would take us through it and explain how language evolves with time and influence from other cultures. fascinating stuff.

Well, it's nice to know you don't have some kind of search-bot lookin' for these threads!!! Hope all is well with you Paula!!

I love language topics and this word is one of those that makes me nuts because there is no real reason for the uproar over it except that it is sort of a homophone to a word we all have at least a little bit of an issue with...no reason at all...

One of my students was also mad because I asked her to read Malcolm's part in Macbeth: "Why you give me that one? That's a black name...why you makin' me read that?" So we ended up talking about where the name came from and all that as well. It was a good conversation and led to some pretty funny jokes later in the play, but sheeeesh!!!

Anyway...peace to you and to Mad Mixer...

gimme a break, "no reason at all..." then you go and provide the very reason for the uproar, all so that you can say to your students they are ignorant about a word that has zero common usage, for good reason, and sounds like a racial epithet, congrats on another "gotcha" moment in the classroom

provide the reason? We're reading Shakespeare and she's the next in line to read, so she gets Malcolm's part?? Or do you mean the fact that we're reading the required text, it happens to be Macbeth and the word is in there, so we end up having a conversation about the terms being used? It's an example of one of the many educable moments that grow out of reading literature. It's an opportunity to expand vocabulary and awareness about language and you call it a "gotcha moment"? There are loads of words in Shakespeare that aren't in common usage, no?

and, frankly, many people (including my students) could use some object lessons in actually listening/reading thoughtfully ...improvements to enunciation would also be helpful...at least in academic or professional settings.

Aiiight. That's your reading and you're entitled to it...have a great day!!

At first glance, it’s completely understandable for us ignorant to draw such a conclusion. But the word provides good opportunity to check ourselves and never take first things at glance no matter how much the similarity.

Shakespeare’s word count is around 29 thousand. The average word usage amongst common folk is around 2 thousand?—And one thing perhaps Brazen hasn’t taught the class is that Shakes himself is from common folks, lower class, and it may do them good to know he’s not some rich stuffy, but a poor cat from Stratford that challenged the greatness of English literature and still to this day there are aristocrats that buy into him not writing those plays because of his lowly origins.

One of the benefits of teaching kids Shakes is that it provides the opportunity to increase their vocabulary, and if permitted, a little introduction to etymology: this word perhaps better than others?

...and, of course, not all references to Ethiopes were negative. The term was also used to create "exotic" images and vivid similes, as seen above.

there is so much wrong with this thread, starting with the title, could it be more condescending? what is the difference between niggardly and niggerdly? why would you ever use a word that has only negative connotations and sounds like a word that has only negative connotations? ever heard of a double entendre? i tell you what, walk around your hood, with two books in your hand, norton's shakespeare and oxford dictionary, and use niggardly as much as possible, and when your homies are about to clean your clock, show them how the bard used it and show them the dictionary, then call 911

A most illogical and poorly formed argument for abandoning use of the word. In a contemporary and practical sense, however, you're right.

When the word was used as referenced in this thread, it surely preceeded the homophone that is offensive. Musey was just expressing exasperation to a situation. I seriously think you say some things just because you feel like debating. Game rekinize game.

"Niggardly" (noun: "niggard") is an adjective meaning "stingy" or "miserly", related to the Norwegian verb nigle. It is cognate with "niggling", meaning "petty" or "unimportant", as in "the niggling details".
"Nigger" derives from the Spanish/Portuguese word negro, meaning "black", and probably also the French nègre, which is likewise a racist insult derived from negro (the ordinary French word for "black" being noir). Both negro and noir (and therefore also nègre and nigger) ultimately come from nigrum, the accusative declension of the Latin word niger, meaning "black".

"Julian Bond, then chairman of the NAACP, deplored the offense that had been taken at Howard's use of the word. "You hate to think you have to censor your language to meet other people’s lack of understanding", he said. "David Howard should not have quit. Mayor Williams should bring him back — and order dictionaries issued to all staff who need them."[4]
Bond also said, "Seems to me the mayor has been niggardly in his judgment on the issue. [...] We have a hair-trigger sensibility, and I think that is particularly true of racial minorities."[5]"

And I understand the hair-trigger...but I also firmly believe that folks could stand some time with dictionaries...

It seems to me more useful to be angry at the things which truly are insulting and negative...but to also try to be sure what those things are before mouthing off...

many people admire those who have extensive vocabularies, while others vilify them for "trying to act/sound (insert dominant culture grouping's name here) or admire virtuoso verbal performances and such...but believe that the project of extending vocabulary is too much hard work.

I have a problem with the latter. We work on vocabulary all the time in my classroom, starting with weekly lessons on roots/prefixes/suffixes and finishing up with whatever vocabulary comes from the current reading for the class.
