It's pretty obvious that people on DHP have a strong passion for music. I was wondering what else consumes your energy/time or what else you have a passion for when music isn't in the forefront of your mind and actions.

It's not exciting sounding nor spiritual nor my passion, but right now, I seem to be spending many waking hours outside of work at Home Depot or Lowes or at home scraping, priming, painting, drilling..or at least thinking about all those things.

I use to be mad about crocheting and sewing but right now, I've been doing a lot more volunteering...and I'm enjoying every minute of it. I began a couple of months ago volunteering at AVOC (Aids Volunteers of Cincinnati) it is a wonderful organization, I have truly become educated and I truly enjoy helping others. I also, volunteer an hour a week at the Boys and Girls Club and I teach GED classes...I use to mentor, kind of still do, my mentee which I've had for the last 5 years is graduating this year, and I think instead of picking up a mentee I'll continue with AVOC, besides I need a 2nd job...so that's my free time in a nutshell....

Interesting that you ask this question. Ngeso's response in your other thread about DJs giving up really made me think. Mostly the part about his being put off by the redundancy of the parties and the rude and anonymous people who don't bother to try to know him as a person.

I've also felt that way at times and his post made me wonder: What would I do with all the time that is now consumed by posting on DHP, listening to mixes, trying to keep up with the records and the who's who of the scene. The time that I am not working (at my job or at home) is pretty much filled with things related to this music. Sometimes I feel consumed by it. Other times I wonder if my "devotion" is really a distraction that is keeping me from doing whatever it is I am supposed to be doing. That is why I could not respond to ngeso's comments -- didn't really want to think too much about what else I should be or could be doing.

Oh well, I am able to justify my time here to a degree because it helps me recover from work stress and I've realized that I am able to write more quickly and clearly because of it. How could I not be a DHP junkie? It combines all of my passions -- reading, writing, music -- often with good, thought-provoking discussion.

Side B

One of my activities has been the Chairman of the Board for Interfaith Adopt a Building who's mission is to provide housing for low income families. I have done this for 11 years. I took a leave of absence for this past year but plan to rejoin the board once again. The organization has pretty much fulfilled its mission and goals and is now dissolving itself. We have 3 buildings left which we are transferring to the tenants as co-ops @ 250.00 per unit in the East Village. When that is finished, then our work will be done. It is all volunteer and nonprofit.

Ashaki and David fill me with guilt. graemlins/mecry.gif

I was thinking about a post of her's awhile back about volunteering or giving back. I would like to help in such ways, but realitically, I am not that sort of a high-contact, people person. I would rather give money to support those who give time. At the end of the day, I just don't have energy to do more than what I already have to do. Does that mean I'm not going to heaven? The Bible says "not by works but by faith." Is that what it says? I've forgotten. Anyway, I guess that passage is subject to interpretation. :D

Seriously, I do wish I was more inclined to give my time to help others in more tangible ways. But both time and money are needed, I suppose.

I have 2 children that have active social lives that keep my Saturdays full. I write poetry and sometimes I go to some open mic spots around the city. When I have writer's block I do more journal writing. I have rekindled my love of reading over the past few years. I actually went and renewed my library card last week. I also love to travel.

Dance. Doing it. Making it. Watching it. Studying it. Teaching it. Helping with the administration of the African dance company I dance in. Been working with renewed vigor on new choreography and getting my work out to a wider audience.

I feel you on the desire to volunteer and assist people more. I'm trying to become a volunteer peer here counselor at Whitman Walker Clinic here in DC. I've realized that I need to channel some energy to other causes besides music. I'll hopefully have word on my attempts by early May.

My children consume my time. If I am not working on biz ventures, preparing paperwork, working on my friend's corporate presence, or researching, I am being full time mommy and wife. In my real spare time (when everyone is asleep) I am meditating, reading scriptures and praying. I am also researching writing grants, I too want to volunteer but I want to start help community children that need help.
