Greg Norwood began his journey into the world of upper echelon DJ’s in 1983 after attending a party spun by House Music legend Chip E. Greg became intrigued by what he saw and heard and, after obtaining his first mixer from a friend, threw himself into this new discovery. Little did he know then that it would become not only a passion but also a way of life for him. Greg states that he started to take spinning seriously in 1990, after having honed his skills at enough successful parties during the heyday of the Chicago scene (his hometown) to give him the confidence to seek new challenges in the music industry. Listing Mike Dunn, DJ Pierre and Armando as his earliest influences in the House Music genre, he eventually got into the NYC and European styles of production later on, including David Morales, Cassio Ware, Little Louie Vega, Mousse T and Boris Dlugosch to name a few. With his vast knowledge of underground music and solid technical abilities intact, it was time for Greg to unveil his potent vein of House Music onto the globe. Greg has had the opportunity to enjoy various long-running residencies at some of Chicago’s favorite underground venues past and present, such as The Generator and Domain, as well as having done guest spots at the city’s most well-known clubs like Smartbar, Mad Bar, Superlounge, Le Passage, Zentra, BigWig and Transit. He’s also been booked at various clubs in the US, like Aqua Lounge in Philadelphia and Lush in Detroit, and in Canada. Winnipeg has proven to be a sort of “second home” for Greg, what with his having lived there for a short period of time and having played at the city’s numerous hotspots such as The Pyramid and The Horseshoe Cabaret. At these various top-flight gigs Greg has graced the decks with a flurry of the world’s finest turntable technicians like DJ Heather, Paul Johnson, DJ Traxx, Ron Carroll, Inland Knights, Andy Caldwell, RaSoul, Tony Humphries, Ralphie Rosario, JT Donaldson and Brett Johnsen. Aside from having shared primo time with them at venues Greg’s also shared the vinyl shop racks with his debut release (co-produced with Joe Silva) in 2001 on Stickman entitled “Silent Voices “, that received rave reviews worldwide. More high quality studio work is expected from Greg in the very near future. Currently Greg is an employee at what is widely considered as the top record store in the US, Gramaphone Records in Chicago. His popular series of mix CD’s, “Urban Underground,” can be purchased there as he constantly is churning out volume after volume. It would suffice to say that he is fully immersed in the music from all angles at this point in his still-burgeoning career. Look for great things to come from one of Chicago’s underground music aficionados. Greg Norwood can be reached for bookings, production and remix work at urbanmusic39@yahoo.com. His brand of House Music can be sampled at www.grooveparlor.com.
