Common Strength:
Both are highly innovative forms of music (yes, I highly think that House is still innovative, despite much of the crap that I'm hearing).
Common Flaw:
The inability to function within the marketplace. The mainstream has eluded both house and jazz fusion. Y'all know about House's issues with getting mainstream appeal. Fusion had problems, too! Fusion fans, let's be real. Do you think radio advertisers would have continued to advertise on a station that plays Mahavishnu or Weather Report tunes in 14/8? Hence, the fall of WRVR (New York, 70s) and the rise of smooth jazz CD101 formats (more like pop music).
Just an observation. Peace.

Just an observation. Peace. Very refreshing insight. Jazz and Deep House, in their purest forms (for Jazz, 3-to-8 piece improvisational work, for Deep House, heady, original, subtle and darkly melodic composition with comparable production) by virtue of what they are, won't see the light of booming mainstream recognition. But this is not a bad thing. This music simply isn't for everyone.

Just an observation. Peace. Excellent points!!!!!
But you have to take into consideration that in the 70s and 80s there existed a phenomena called "Regional Taste". Something that has vanished like a fart in the wind as a result of deregulation.
You're on point with the short comings (if you want to call it that) of House and Fusion when it comes to marketing to the masses. We're also in a time where Videos more or less make you a star rather than the music an artist creates. We all remember those cheesy "Sunday Brunch" videos of Chick Corea, Spyra Gyra, Kenny G, and Pat Matheny. But they helped sell records.
Peace

I think the length of the songs is crucial. How many jazz, or jazz fusion tunes or house tunes are under 4 minutes?
Hardly any. This causes problems with programming and advertising in todays radio market place. sad really. Also, jazz is harmonically more sophisiticated than most of the music on radio, much like classical is. most of it goes over peoples heads.

We had a fusion station here in Chicago called "TRIAD" featuring artist such as Starcastle, Ghalib Ghalob Quintet, Return to Forever, Mahavishnu Orchestra..It was really underground to me. I miss that shit.
