it's easy to be a great coach when you have talent. he's been on a bad streak. i would love to see phil jackson take a nodoby team and make it something.

I agree with you on that TC, furthermore although I am a fan of Lamar Odom , I could understand if Riles ducked because he realized Odom is NO Majic Johnson.

Riley is a great coach--I am surprised he stepped down. I didn't think the Heat would be too bad this year with Dwayne Wade and Lamar Odom. I am going to the season opener on Tuesday--76ers v. Heat so I will get a close look at the Riley-less Heat.

I've always felt that Pat Riley was a good coach, I could never call him a great coach myself, But, it took me a very long time to truely give Pat Riley credit for being good at his job, Because on the low, Every team that Pat Riley has coached, Always had the pieces together(Or close to it), To do very well(LOL), For the cats/Young ladies who don't know, Pat Riley became the Lakers head coach in 1982 only because Magic(Magic Johnson)got Paul Westhead(Who was the Lakers coach at that time), Cancelled(fired)because the Lakers were at that time going thru a losing period for a few(All teams go thru this during the course of a season), And Paul Westhead wanted the Lakers to change there style of play for a few games and slow the ball up more, And, Play better defense, But, Magic felt that style of play would hurt the team rather than help and Magic wanted Jerry Buss to trade him because of this(Sucker move to the highest order by Magic, But Pat Ewing did the same thing to Hubie Brown in 1986 with the Knicks, When Hubie Brown asked Pat to play Power foward for a few for the good of the team and Pat mentioned that he would look bad playing power foward, And requested to get traded because of a move that hopefully would help the team), Paul Westhead had just won a championship with the Lakers the year before he was cancelled in 1980(Magic's rookie year), Paul Westhead took over the head coaching duties from Jack Mckinney in 1980 when Jack Mckinney had an accident riding his bike and i think broke his leg, Quiet as it's kept, It was Paul Westhead that created the fastbreaking style of play that the Lakers were well-known for in the 80's(Definitely not Pat Riley), And when you have a crew with 3 Hall of Famers in your lineup(Kareem,Magic Johnson,Keith/Jammal Wilkes), You should when alot of championships(LOL), Pat Riley never had to build and develop a team from the gate(Start), He's always had the pieces(Players)to continue winning and building(New York Knicks and Miami Heat), On the low, When Pat Riley took over after Magic got Paul Westhead Fired in 1982, the Lakers had a crew(Kareem,Magic,Jammal Wilkes,Mitch Kupchak, etc, Then the Lakers jerked some team(I can't remember who at this time)Out of there draft pick(Cats need to talk about Jerry West being great rather than Pat Riley), And they got James Worthy in the 1982 draft, Now, With a crew like that, You should win at least one championship(Or at least get to the championship series), Just cooling on the bench(Like Pat Riley was doing most of his time with the Lakers in the 80's), What i'm trying to say is, What type of basketbal knowledge was Pat Riley going to pass over to Kareem(Who has seen it all back then), Or Keith Wilkes, Or Magic,(Cats know who was really running the Lakers back then, Kareem,Keith Wilkes, and Magic), The media souped Pat Rily up hard for sporting nice gear all through the 80's(And cats respected him for that rather than his knowledge of the game,Which he learned in his later years as a head coach), to me, A great coach is not a cat who can win championship(That's the soup up that the media throws at you, Your not considered good at your craft as an coach if you don't win a championship or championships), A great coach to me is win you can develop cats from the ground up and make cats play well above their ability and win doing so, That, To me is the mark of a great coach, when you don't need talented cats to win(Maybe not a championship, But your crew is always consistent every year and maybe with some luck, your crew can get a key player or players that you can develop into your system and gie your crew a better chance to take it(Win a championship), On the low, Pat Riley has done his share of sucker move shit in his years, And what goes around come around in reference to those winning years with the Lakers in the 80's, Having to go through Michael Jordan in the 90's, Then, Suffering through some very hard years the last few with the Miami Heat.
