yeah this is no problem, unless they are both usb drives. most laptops should have two usb's and one fire wire. I have one fire wire and one usb plugged in all the time.

you know if the laptop your running off of is a mac or windows? does he use itunes with his serato? I would suggest dumping all the information into itunes from the drives before hand. If you have the ports for both drives great. If not all you got to do is eject one drive and plug in the other on the fly if you have all ready imported the information.

Windows...so I would have to import all of my files into ITunes beforehand?
I have damn near all of my files tagged.
This is new to me,so excuse some of my questions.I'm just trying to get a grasp of this.
I used the porgram before, using his laptop and drive and the shit was dope as fuck.I was able to just search out the titles.

Jamie, you should have multiple USB ports for the drives (my laptop has five). I'm assuming - but haven't actually tried - that you can have as many external drives hooked up at the same time as long as you have a port for each one.
...and, as Sal said, a lot of external drives also have Firewire cables in addition to USB, so that can be a possible avenue as well.

Yes you can hook up more than one drive with Serato...I used to run 2 at one time...Just make sure the laptop has at least 3 open USB ports and you will be fine....Its an AWESOME feeling to just type in a quick search for songs instead of flipping through cds and records....AHHHHHHHH....

You can also put any audio/data CD into the laptop's CD drive and play it from there in Scratch Live (if you don't have an external CD player available).

the mixer has to have 4 line inputs..not 2 line 2 phonos...otherwise there will be a gap in the music so that you unplug the ssl box..

if you have an external power source for your serato box you can play with out your laptop plugged in. If you are stuck in the above scenerio you have described you can avoid a gap by switching out your rca's if some one is taking the serato box home with them or something. Point is there is almost always a solution.

I knew an adapter for the box took care of the problem, I just couldnt remember how, so I figured I keep that info to myself..so basically serato is "holding" the file, not reading directly from the disk when there is a power source?
Im kinda referring to when one dj is following another with serato on a separate laptop but they are sharing the same box..

if you are switching between laptops you need to either play a a track off a piece of actual vinyl or a cd while you switch. THe power adapter allows you to play cd's or vinyl through the serato box with out a laptop connected to it. With out the power source the laptop itself is acting as the power source.

this is all you need to add additional external drives if the laptop does not have enough usb... and do as sal says, just load your tracks into an itunes play list or ssl crate beforehand and you'll be good to go

Jamie, you don't even need to switch laptops, unless your music is on the laptop's internal HD instead of an external drive.
When you use SL, and make your crates, it saves all the crate data in the Serato folder. So if you are working from somebody else's computer that's running SL, if you hook your drive up to it, the program will search out any Serato folders on any drives hooked up to the hosting computer and load the crates into the currently running SL program, allowing access to the files as you organized them.
I did a gig two weeks ago we had five drives hooked up so three DJs could work off of the same computer and SL box. If all of your music is on your drive, then all you have to do is just get a USB hub and hook all your drives up to the computer running Scratch Live.
I've lightened my load even further by keeping new tracks on an 8GB flash drive.
Right now, I'm running a pair of tables, a pair of CD decks, and a Denon DN-HS5500 (with a 1TB hard drive as the file source). The Denon Digital deck is running Scratch Live as my primary, leaving me free to use CD's as backups, and the turntables to play new vinyl.
I'm in love with this software, man!

playing disco on serato is like fucking with 3 condoms and 1 rubber glove on your jammy.....
house is ok, but it really dose not sound that good, I've used it 4 nights a week for like as long as its been out, if i was not a working DJ like if i did not depend on playing kelly clarkson and david guetta to pay my rent, i probably would not fuck with it...
I mean really how often dose anyone have a gig where they play house music all night.... burn your new heat to cd, bring a couple bags or records and call it a day...
even a 320 mp3 sounds way better burned onto cd and played ina cdj than thru the serato "soul sucking" box...
i been fucking with serato for years, i love it cause its made me a lot of money, but I hate it cause it cause it just is fucking miserable...

Sorry to hear you have to play Kelly Clarkson and the likes
Are you using Serato on CD's or Turntables?
I use turntables and have to tell you riding disco is just like old times for me. I can put the needle to the record where ever I want. I started using it on my CD decks and when I went to a friends house and saw his connected to the turntables and he picked that needle up and moved it across to the spot he wanted....change was eminent.
I never looked back and just like playing vinyl back in the old days except no skip, crackle nor pop.
Jus sayin

The beauty of this program is that it allows you to find your own way in whatever you want to do with it.
My guy DJ OPM uses it primarily with the turntables. I use the Denon HD controller, and my other guy, Suge-lyte uses the CD interface.
It's all good and far as the sound quality, if you clean up/tweak your poor quality mp3s then your stuff should sound just fine. Use "Platinum Notes" or "Sound Forge" on your weak mp3s to tweak the front end, expand your midrange, and fatten up the back end a bit; they'll sound just fine. I usually have to do that to tracks I buy from DJ Download. The stuff I burn over from vinyl comes across pretty good. Also make sure that you get a decent mp3 encoder. Sony's encoder is one of the better ones that I've used, though the LAME is workable if used correctly.
I'm not going to turn this into a "digital vs. analog" argument, but I will say that since I've gone digital, I've been able to financially keep up with the music acquisition curve in getting the new stuff. Coupled with using Scratch Live, I've been able run with the big dogs. As they say, this software will not make you a better DJ far as technique or skills, but it will make you a better one in regards to economy of operation and efficiency of function.

WANT TO BE A DJ = VCI-300, Computer and Headphones!
Vestax and Serato have joined forces.
Sharing their technology and compiled feedback from Pro DJ'fs and users from around the world, they have created a dedicated DJ USB MIDI / Audio system and software offering absolute control.
The VCI-300 is a dedicated USB MIDI controller for the included Serato DJ software. It also comes with a built in audio interface with standard 4in/4out and headphone connection, which means all you need for DJing is the VCI-300, a laptop and a set of headphones.
New features such as the [Emergency Thru Switch] offers an option of using the VCI-300 with the provided ITCH software or without the computer connected if you simply want to play music from your external CD or MP3 player. Another is the new weight reduced JOG wheel and the adjustable JOG wheel torque mechanism to avoid vibration from low frequency feedback.

playing disco on serato is like fucking with 3 condoms and 1 rubber glove on your jammy.....
house is ok, but it really dose not sound that good, I've used it 4 nights a week for like as long as its been out, if i was not a working DJ like if i did not depend on playing kelly clarkson and david guetta to pay my rent, i probably would not fuck with it...
I mean really how often dose anyone have a gig where they play house music all night.... burn your new heat to cd, bring a couple bags or records and call it a day...
even a 320 mp3 sounds way better burned onto cd and played ina cdj than thru the serato "soul sucking" box...
i been fucking with serato for years, i love it cause its made me a lot of money, but I hate it cause it cause it just is fucking miserable...
umm why not just use .wav files wich are the same as cd?

I didn't think that Rane was going to let Serato farm that tech out; especially to Vestax...oh well. Shows what I know. That's pretty cool.

i have to be honest, if you are just getting into the game or replacing broken gear, I would go this route. However, if you already own a decent pair of cd players, I would save my money and put it in the bank for a rainy day. these companies just keep finding ways to pocket our money. we keep falling for these marketing campaigns. at the end of the day, we are just playing music.
just my two cents.

I'm not into controllers. I like being able to play Lp's, Cd's or files off of my laptop.

Well I love my CDJs, but one of the big problems I have playing out doing guest slots, is getting jacked in the board with a laptop set up (space mainly).... i have CDJs in a "coffin" but it would be more convienent if I had a "All in one controller" where I can do my thing with little hassle to set up or room....sure the CDJ set up is smaller than 1200s, but the controller is one mo' betta....
