View Full Version : DJ Culture?
What is it?
Are there any particular things that we know as definitely being part of DJ culture.
For instance, have you ever seen a milk crate raid? This one is real old s'kool, since the storage of music has since gotten more refined. But I remember seeing these cat role out of a van up at Sunnydale in east New York, and move hard on the stack of crates stored there. Low and behold, I roll to this block party and who do I se, but these same cats spinning. I kinda laughed cause I relalized what the move was all about.
What else is specifically DJ culture.
Peace

Hold up TAC, from you this is not a well structured question...It should be about the culture of us who suck and the culture of those few who dont.

One day, I asked him why he licks his fingure before gettign on the table. He had no reply.

Some folks take the so-called culture aspect and shit on it.
True this really is a form of art,but there's folks who claim some things to be art, when it's bullshit...plain and simple.
I don't believe in the philsophy that things should be one way and one way only. There should be a way you open records,a way you should present a song to folks, don't break too many new songs in one nite and so forth. That's bullshit to me.Do what the hell you do and let everyone else do his/her thing.
That's the biggest problem out here today....phuckin' zerox ass dj's.Be original and come up with ya own culture and flava.

TAC,I feel ya on the crate raids. We used to go in the burbs and get the long plastic blue crates. We even used to use recycling buckets.
Who was the first person to do the sideways monitoring?Even when I was not a dj,I used to mimic cats doing that.Folks will come up to me who I haven't seen in years and go.."Are you still spinning?"They would put their head to the side and pretend to be spinning.

I find myself looking for heavy bits of metal with the right-sized hole in the middle for holding down warped records while cueing...

...or how about having a tell tale horizontal faded line on your trousers (or pants), where you have rubbed the sealed vinyl so you can break the shrink wrap.

anybody else?

here's a good one.
usually the morning(or afternoon) after, when my alarm clock goes off,
instead of waking up I am mixing beats to the alarm in my head before I actually snap out of it.
It usually takes about 2 minutes.....now thats messed up..............
DJ culture?
lets see.......
marking the groove of one of your doubles with a silver marker or even liquid paper so that you can find the right cue spot in the dark at a seconds notice.
used to do that a lot.......

cuz I see some rank-bastard
talking shit!.....yeah, here's one or two....
1. The assinine, bullshit notion that you have to produce music to be a respected DJ.
2. The hypocritical notion that cats want something different. That's a Fckn lie, they
want you to be JUST LIKE THEM...and if not, they're dissin the shit out of you.....playing progressive amongst others, while deep in their
hearts exists this malice, a cowardice malice, that could easily get A or B critically f*cked up!
(Gman, Torin or any other administrators, that's said in general, at the spirit of hypocrisy, and any who represent it's status quo....... :D )
