Say Hippie Torrales, I have the utmost respect for your mixing talents my man, Especially at spots like The Lincoln Motel(Abe's),and Zanzibar in the late 70's, Back in the 70's,80's, Did you get a chance to mix in any spots in New York on the regular, And also, After you left from Zanzibar in i think late 1979(Step to me if i'm wrong on the information my man), What spots were you mixing at back then(Late 70's/Early 80's), The reason why i asked is, I thought i remembered Tee Scott mixing at Zanzibar in like October/November of 1979 on Saturday nites(If i remember correctly), Again, Much respect to you for being on the board and passing around information with cats/Young Ladies in the place to be.

Thank you all for welcoming me with open arms. As for Zanzibar history I'll try and give a brief summary and correct some mistakes people have made over the years. Before there was Zanzibar there was Abe's Disco. Abe's was more oriented towards an older club crowd. At the same time me and my partner Nelson (Butchie) Nieves opened a club in downtown Newark called Docks. Docks was actually opened while Nicky still had the Gallery. The Garage was not established yet. Now Docks was where all the club heads that later ended up in Zanz and The Garage use to go. Small club with a good sound system. While I was holding down the fort in Docks I started Djing at Abes before Zanz opened. Now the resident at Abes was Gerald T Rooney. He was a great DJ who new excatly how to break new music to his audience. I use to play on off nights. Now Docks was already open but we use to have an all white audience. I believe the reason we use to have that kind of crowd was because Newark was such a black city and here was this club in the heart of it's downtown area it had the same appeal as the Cotton Club in Harlem. Now 3 years before Zanz opened we started a gay black night on Wednesday at Dock's which was hosted by Al Murphy. Wednesday's was such a huge success that our whole cliental changed to a black mixed audience. A little back tracking here I made my bones DJing for black audiences while doing mobile gigs with my partner Butchie under the name Traveling Disco Sounds. We use to do alot parties with Mark 4 Disco one of NJ's premier DJ groups. Here is a link with a picture circa 1974 of Mark 4 disco & Traveling Disco Sounds together, http://jerseydjs.com/djmrg/page7.htm, I was all of 16. Now in 1979 Miles Burger ( The Owner Of Zanz ) wanted to do something with his upstairs ballroom which was used for weddings and banquets and seminars so he spoke to his sound engineer and told him he wanted to do a big club in the room and the engineer ( Richard Long Of Paradise Garage Fame ) said OK then let me take you to a club I did the sound in NY! Miles was taken to Paradise Garage and was blown away he told Richard I want that in Jersey. So construction started around Feb of 79 and was finished a week before opening night. Contrary to what my good friend Shelton Hayes said Zanzibar did not open on a Wednesaday with Larry Patterson it opened August 29 1979 on a Friday with yours truly on the 1 & 2. Now I did Fridays and Gerald T. did Saturdays for about 4 months but I kept trying to sell Al Murphy to Miles as Promoter and Host. Finally Miles gave in and Al Murphy was brought in. Now we started kicking ideas around and I suggested bringing guest Dj's. Well to make along story short Larry had an exclusive gig with Paradise and couldn't do guest spots in the city but Jersey was a different story so Larry came on as Wednesday Nights DJ. Shortly after Al came on he kept on telling me I should be the Dj on Friday & Saturday I fought him for a while but finally gave in and approached Miles and he said I should be so I ended up being the only Dj on the Weekends upstairs. I tell you I felt really bad for Gerald for a long time but that was the way it ended up. Now I wanted to bring guest Dj's in like Larry was doing with Paradise and that's how Tee Scott, Larry Patterson and some other Dj's did guest spots. Now Zanz did really well it's 1st year we not only had a huge audience but unlike Paradise who's artist did mostly tape shows we brought in whole groups. We had Eddie Kendricks and band in person we had The Whispers and band in person. You could imagine how I felt I was a week shy of 21 on opening night and bye the age of 21 I was the head Dj in New Jerseys biggest club. Now I was the house jock from 79 to 81. In 1980 Billboard magazine held it's last Billboard awards for DJ's. Now the way it worked was that every dj in his particular state would vote for whom they thought was the best Dj in there state. The last award for best Dj in the state of NJ was one by me " talk about a good year " and believe it or not Larry Levan won it for NY and that was the only time he won it. So in brief that is the history of Zanzibar. I have alot more stories of what had happened and was happening at the time but that's for another day. Peace, Hippie

Hippie thanks for setting the record straight on the early days. You have always been a very modest brother. I will always have the utmost respect for you. Peace to you Hippie it's good to see you get your well-deserved props for your work over the years at Zanzibar, Docks and also the present.

I was fortunate to be a part of that era and will never forget how refreshing your mixing style was in those days. I can remember being in Docks one time and you had 2 classics riding while you were outside of the booth do you remember that? You gave new meaning to "Heartbreak Hotel" by the Jacksons bro. Man you used to rip that joint. Caught you at Club After Hours in Newark last year and it was great to hear you in rare form just like back then.

I also would like to thank you for mentioning my cousin Eric "Briscoe" Cohen in the Mark IV picture. He let me do my first mix in his basement too long ago to mention and was one of my earliest inspirations with playing records.

Simply put, you da man Hippie hail.gif

About Gerald T Rooney and Brokers I don't know if he played there but a little history about that place. It was also just a downstairs club and when they decided to open the upstairs Miles brother Bruce Burger wanted me to do it so once again I was the opening Dj this time I played both nights and I stayed for about 2 months before I ended up DJing down the shore in Jersey. Thats another story.

What's up Hippie, did you play at Cheetas for a while too? (Al Murphy used to come to the record store I worked at in Plainfield. He hit us up with Zanz wrist and head bands, wish I still had those joints.) Gerald was running his pool and Brokers when it started. Remember Lionel and Burt from Club 88 or Mike Mcknight? I remember a cat named Mumbles (?) from back in the days too, not sure what happened to him. Glad to see you here.

Hey DJ Skillz! Can't say I remember Lionel or Burt but that's because there were so many people I probably remember most people when I see them. Mumbles is a chauffer. He works from Newark airport alot. Mike Mcknight that was one bad DJ. And I mean good. He was the first Dj I know that traveled. He had a summer stint in Alcupoco, Mexico in a club called Baby O's. And this was in the 70's. Way before anyone was Djing over seas. He was also the Dj that brought me down to the Jersey shore. Mike was great jock.

Good lookin for the info on Mumbles. Yo I learned a lot from Mike M, he used to come to my early mobile gigs for support. He was trying to get me and my boy to come down to the shore, did not want to deal with that crowd. Last time I saw him was when he had me as a guest at Seductions. Do you remember Barry the California DJ? He was in Chiniques (?), I was not old enough to get in but used to hear tapes of him.

Barry The California DJ. Yeah I remember him he was a good jock. He played at Shaniques and he played at Magoo's in East Orange after I left there. I believe he past away some years ago. Larry Patterson also played at Shaniques ( I'm sure I'm spelling it wrong) and Eric Livesy. There was also a club on Brandford not Sensations another club I forgot the name but it was a hot club and the DJ was a guy named Acid Queen John. He was a white boy that can play his ass off. I saw many a people loose it on the floor when he played. And of course you also had Sensations with Kelly. And there's also Murphy's a Newark landmark. As I remember these places I'll try to drop a little history every once in a while.

Mike the name is very familiar but I can't place a face to Dave Brockington. Yes I did do some guest spots at Club America ( Another Miles Burger club ). Stephon , Camacho and Naeem were regulars at Dock's every week almost. They use to hang all the time in the club. Kevin O I met when I had my Birthday party at Zanzibar and he was the house jock while I was the guest. All good DJ's although Camacho and Naeem are the closes to my style of DJing. I created a style I called crossover mixing in the 70's when 3 way crossovers first came out and when Camacho and Naeem started making names for themselves that was the style they used. Now you rarely hear anyone use it. It was something very Jersey. Basically it was mixing with just the bass on or the highs or the mids or a combo of any two on the crossover. But when I did it no one had ever done it before that. The reason I created that style was because back then you wanted to be unique so I experimented till I came up with that style. Most people played with the crossover like we do now but I wanted to take it one step further. Sorry there I go ranting about my history. Yeah all good guys.

Me again I have a request for anyone that might be able to help. Opening night ( 8/19/79 ) at Zanzibar was a live remote on radio station WNJR. I have been looking for a copy of this broadcast forever. If anybody has a copy or knows of anyone who might have a copy please let me know. I tried the radio station a couple of years ago but had no luck and since they are no longer around my only chance is if someone recorded from home. So ask your friends or relatives or any old jocks you might know. this is a treasure to me. Thx for your efforts, Hippie graemlins/jpshakehead.gif graemlins/conf44.gif
