marry 19-year-old Mandy Smith, whom he has been dating for six years.

Paul McCartney announces a "temporary break with the Beatles," April 11,
1970. Paul cites "personal differences" and adding that he will no longer
record with John Lennon. Despite the announcement, "Let It Be," which tops
the singles chart on this day, remains at #1 for only two weeks.

Columbia Records announces April 7, 1956 that it is suspending production of
78-rpm disks for all genres except "hillbilly music."

Motley Crue drummer Tommy Lee suffers a mild concussion when he falls after
swinging from a scaffolding above an elevated drum kit in New Haven,

Bruce Springsteen meets rock critic Jon Landau at Charley's Place in
Cambridge, Massachusetts, April 9, 1974. Landau, who becomes the Boss'
manager, pens the immoral words, "I have seen the future of rock and roll,
and its name is Bruce Springsteen."

Pink Floyd announces that founder Syd Barrett, suffering from psychiatric
disorders compounded by drug use, has officially left the group, April 6,
1968.
Lead guitarist Richie Blackmore leaves Deep Purple, April 7, 1975. The band
attempts to continue with Tommy Bolin but toss in the towel after making one
more record, Come Taste the Band.

The April 10, 1968 issue of Rolling Stone reports that a second drummer,
Mickey Hart, has joined the Grateful Dead at the invitation of founding
member and first drummer Bill Kreutzmann. Hart leaves the band in February
1971, but rejoins in 1974.

Bob Dylan makes his New York City debut at Gerde's Folk City, a small
Greenwich Village club, opening for bluesman John Lee Hooker on April 11,
1961.

Bob Dylan performs his first major solo concert at Town Hall in New York
City, April 12, 1963. Billboard's review typifies public reaction, saying he
"is the stuff of which legends are made... His talent will be around for a
long, long time." (1963)

Folk singer Phil Ochs kills himself in New York, April 8, 1976. He was 36.
Nirvana lead singer Kurt Cobain kills himself at his Seattle home, probably
on April 5, 1994, though his body was not discovered until April 8. He was
27.
Songwriter Laura Nyro dies at her home in Danbury, Connecticut, April 9,
1997. She was 49.
