Is it just me, or do these absurdly long t-shirts look like the kind of thing a 12-year old girl wears to bed at night?

Is this just a NY thing or are thugs wearing these nightgowns in other cities too?

The kids have been wearing T-shirts like this is Jersey for the past 2 summers - esp. since the gangs have become more and more prevelent. There is a reason......

And
08-04-2003, 08:23 AM
What's the reason?

Those shirts go back at least 20 years...SEEN in videos by the likes of FGTH and Wham...also sported by college kids at Freakniks and at the Jones Beach Greek picnics

this is a fad that never ended but has shifted from scene to scene

in other words, it aint a thug thing

Not my cup of tea.

For kids that are saposta be so tough Ive never seen anything that resemble such a self-consciousness of appearance.

The long white nightgown is usually accompanied by a colored t over it…and then the hat and the shoes must match the color of the t.

And then of course the hand towel= security blanket.

They dress like little babies color coordinated by their mothers with their blanket ready to be tucked in and put to sleep.

actually the hand towels are the single understandable facet of the look. brothas, especially ones with super short hair (and even braids), take hand towels around during the summer to protect their heads. they throw them on when the sun beats down hard, so their heads won't fry. white people usually don't "get" that one.

peace

I can understand whites not understanding something so ludicrous.....coming from Africa and having a hard time in the heat...

Its another goof-ball trend. NYC 5 billion styles and most the brothas choose 1.....(does not compute).....of course to each his own, but
what a coincidence...

peace Oh yea and you and Hk can really understand why HISPANIC KIDS (all the kids in my city) with long hair and already wearing BASEBALL CAPS carry around towels because its to protect their scalps.

I love how some people jump the gun before they know what the **** anyone is talking about.

Who was stupid enough to assume that 138 was talking about black people?

The Cuban kids with long hair and ponytails in my hood really must have had a hard time in Africa.....or maybe you dont "get" that one.

Now who doesnt know what their talking about oh gracious all understanding black brothers?

Actually i've been known to wear a towel over my head too..the sun beating down is a mother and as long as shit is informal why not...seems to be a better idea than carrying an umbrella - much more practical ( big cowboy hats are nice too)

It is amazing that when white folk beatified the look with sayings such as "Choose Life" and "Frankie Says...", the long t-shirt look is oh so FABULOUS. Jump forward 20 years and when minority youth wear the VERY SAME GEAR ( whether it has writing on it or not is immaterial) its now a reflection of THUG MENTALITY....shit aint nothing but another attempt to demonize and criminalize minority youth:
Q: "Why did ya shoot Abdullah Johnson 134 times in the back Officer Whitey Puerco?"

A. "Because he had on one of those long ghetto thug T Shirts your honor and i thought he had something"

Jury: "Not Guilty"

Black Folk: " Damn now we are outraged, maybe C Delores Tucker was wrong"

Momma Johnson: " Can anybody front some funds for me to bury my boy...he was only 11 and had no insurance"

SHIT

what led me to comment on the towel-on-the-head thing was a recently overheard comment of one of two white yuppie cats sitting in an outdoor restaurant, maybe two feet away from me, but clearly not aware of their surroundings. as a young brown-skin teenager walked past {towel flopped comfortably atop head) one of the cats snickers, gestures and says, "look at this...all he needs to do it tie it on with a belt and then he'll look like a s..." it finally dawns on him that he was sitting in close proximity to a couple a negros. by then i was already filling in his blank and he was fast approaching beat red complexion. but he then tries to fix the bullshit with talking about "saudi arabian" fashion and how it makes such good sense in the heat

But the 20 something 'thug looking' guys in my building right now as we speak just out of jail in job placement services are gonna have a real hard time getting a job when they show up here wearing a suit but cant take the doo-rag off because their too insecure to dress like 'the man'.

boy the suit really works with the matching du-rag!

And now were all gonna lie to ouselves right?

Yeah, I noticed this when I went home a few weeks back for a graduation gig. A young cat from around the way who plays for St.Johns RedMen is like 6'8" and he had on one of those long as shirts. It really looked funny cause it was like sneakers and a long ass shirt, it gives the effect of like a... tall ass midget?

My teenage son wears these "long t-shirts" when he's chillin or just wants to be casual. He also has a few suits, khakis, boots, quite a few pairs of sneakers, SHOES and ties in his closet. My thugged looking son is going on his 2nd year of college AND made the Dean's list. When he walks out my door everyday I give him my blessings hoping that he doesn't run into some close minded a-hole that will look at his attire and think the worst. After all, I DON'T have Bryant Gumble's money and status.
