Saw in news that Universal Music ( the biggest of the big boys) has announced it will drop its MSRP to $12.98 ( i think)...this will allow retailers to sell CDs for under 10 dollars..the move is a direct response to the downloading phenomena

Its a desparate move to try to hold on to what little share of the market they have left.

Market forces at work baby. There's a serious paradigm shit going on, and the majors are running scared.

For those who are into the effect on society that technology can have, this is but another example at work.

P.S. Mark, your LATE!!!!

Peace

as TAC said it's a late response by the recording industry to illegal downloading.

for those interested in the effect of internet, cd-r and other technologies that have effected the way the music industry works now, this is an interesting book:
John Alderman, "Sonic Boom, Napster, P2P and the future of music..." 4th estate ISBN 1-84115-513-6

it describes all the developments within the industry from the emerge of the internet, gives you an insight into what the recordingindustry has tried to cope with napster and other filesharing programs, but also explains why some of their initiatives failed.
unfortunately it doesn't give views on the possible future, but then again, you could probably write more then one book about that.

jurren Some industries will collapse, new ones will be created...

The action of the majors right now is tantamount to that wounded animal lashing out in all directions.

Hilarious, me I'm steering away from purchasing CD's; they are a rip. They always were a rip from the very beginning. They cost less to make than vinyl, but are sold for twice the price of vinyl. They take up less space, so you can store more per square foot and hence sell more to thereby make more money. Greed is a b*tch. It will have you doing all kinds of bullsh*t. The reason why I bring this section up is this.

I recently ordered a compilation box set from the BMG Jazz club. The thing cost $88.00. By the time it got to me, the bill was $127, where shipping and handling was $32!!!! I ain’t paying. They can sue me. After all $32 dollars shipping and handling for a damn box the size of my hand. The shipping and handling is them tacking on their damn profit. Robbery!!

Next, these people are calling me asking why I haven’t ordered CD’s in a while, and whether I’d like to take advantage of a great special. Bull. Them calling me is a recognition of dropped profits. The dying throws I say, the dying throws….

Peace
