If you plan on having your computer for a couple of years, I'd jump to a full Pentium 4 processor, not the Celeron.

It's an investment!!

I went to far with deleting stuff.

It's $1,086. $33 a month but at 27.99% interest!

WOW!

WOW! You are going for the pay-per-month option? I wouldn't consider this deal if that is what you are going to do. 27.99 interest is a crime. By the time you end up paying for that PC, you could've probably bought 3 of them.

For that price.. get something with an Intel pentium processor.. 30Gigs is alot unless you're planning on storing alot of media on it....and an optical mouse isn't necessary... that'll save u some $$$.

Okay, brought it down to the 20gig standard, no optical mouse (I hate the finger pad but I can you my conventional mouse for now). Pentium processor is not an option for this special. Brought it down to $998.

Be very careful with financing whatever computer you plan to purchase.

Walmart has deals on Hewlett Packard PCs for as low as 500 bucks. I've played with them and they're really nice systems for that price range.

They're not over the top systems but the scalability sold me. I suggested a few of these systems from Walmart to a few teachers and they have been very happy with them.

Treat buying a computer like buying a house or a car. Do the research!!!

A couple of things have me looking at this Dell. For one thing, I don't have a grand to plunk down right now and I've been putting this off for a long time. Dell offered to finance me when others so far have not. I know the rate is a ripoff, but I'm hoping to be able to pay them back fairly quickly to minimize the damage. Also the Dell support is legendary. I have a Dell notebook here at work and frankly I love it. I don't want any more desktops.

Do these reasons sound to anyone like I'm trying to convince myself? Because honestly, right now I'm having a hard time being objective.

again I say...DON'T DO IT!

27.99% rate? graemlins/puke.gif

maybe see if you can get a personal loan from a bank/lender for $1000. I'm sure you'd get a better rate than 30%. I didn't even know it was legal to charge such a high rate.

darrow
03-26-2003, 11:42 AM
I bought my Mac G4 under a similar scenario a few years ago. The rate was about 19% from Apple. Before I made the purchase, I budgeted out my finances and figured out just how quickly I could pay that sucker off...before the 3 yr "loan" was up. I paid that thing off QUICK.

If you really must finance and there is no other way to do it (personal loan, loan (with interest) from someone you know), first do a realistic projection of how much you can pay per month over the minimum and figure out how much you will end up paying for the inspiron.

Dell Inspiron Notebooks are definately well built notebooks. We use the 810s at my job.

Ask yourself these two questions.

What will be the primary use for this laptop?

If I plan on using this for other purposes, will this laptop be enough to handle certain software packages?

This is why some of us are saying, upgrade to a Pentium 4. This will cut out the heartache you may encounter two to three years from now.

One thing you may want to take into consideration.
Ease up on the software bundles they are offering. There's always a friend out there that will lend you their software to install. This will help bring the price down.

Peace

Rather than tinkering with the system to downgrade it, customize it and get what you really want. At this point, it appears that you've already talked yourself into financing the computer. Because you'll be paying on it for a while, upgrade and get something you'll be completely satisfied with. You may find that the monthly payment will still be within reason, and you'll have no regrets about what you should have gotten.....JMJ graemlins/cool_shades.gif

Is purchasing a computer a necessity?
Will you die if you dont have it?

Dont risk putting yourself into unnecessary debt.

I wouldnt buy a computer until I could pay cash for it. Financing a computer is an easy way to overpay for it.

Get with your household members, brainstorm and find creative ways to make money to pay for the computer you want in cash.

Good deals on computers will always be around.
Make logical purchases...not emotional ones

The problem with financing a computer is that in most cases the computer is outdated and obsolete by the time you get done paying for it, knda like financing a car. Okay, I think this is my last set of excuses. I'll make my decision by close of business today.

I'm trying to get back into school in the fall... NYU Wagner PHd in public Admin program. Although I have a laptop at work, I really am going to need my own for that program.

Of couse, the argument could easily be won if one of you would just lend me the money for the darned thing.

How much faster were you planning to pay it down? I mean if you have until September couldn't you save a grand and buy something for cash? Or even maybe use part of a student loan to finance the purchase at a lower, possibly deductible rate or maybe even take advantage of a special targeted at students?

Will you be making MORE of LESS money once school starts to pay for a financed computer???

Will you be incurring MORE expenses once school starts??

Will you joy in having another few thousand dollars (the amount it will end up being at 27%) added to your debt load??

By cutting costs and finding creative ways to making additional $$ you can get $1,000 in cash by the fall..4/5 months from now.

Learn to break the debt cycle

Dont venture into voluntary slavery.

First, sometimes I wish I were a starving student again. I make good cash, but I spend it quick, quick, so I'm broke. Still trying to learn to save (as you can see, I'm not doing well in that department).

Second, I'm not planning on starving. I'm too old for that crap now.

You know, I thought about struttin' my stuff on the street, but I'd probably end up losing money that way.

Okay, I think you guys have talked me out of it. Primarily it was that stupid interest rate that changed my mind. I don't know that I'll save for the computer, but I've got 2 more store bills to pay off, then I should have enough to just buy the darned thing outright.

Get a great deal on a computer with the best processor (P4) and with as much assesories that U can afford and upgrade yourself. My gateway PC does not have any of it's original hardware in it except the processor. I upgraded the hard drive, the ram, installed a burner, video card and zip drive. If I had it to do all over again , my only concern would be the processor. Thankfully my AlienWare is the Shilsnit. POWER to the Purple PC!!!

Ugh. If you can use pen and paper at school and keep a suped-up desktop system at home, I would do that. If you must have a laptop, work with someone who knows their shit and get a recommendation.

Honestly, I would eMail my brother Rom. He and I are ultra-competitive when it comes to this stuff. Now that he's real-estate king, he's fat and lazy ( ;) ), but he should be able to turn you on to someone in Chicago that knows what they are doing.

Also, tell him I said he's fat and lazy. He'll love that. graemlins/rofl.gif

Find a tech you know at the office and ask if he or she can build you one for much cheaper. Everyone who knows his or her stuff can do this.

While the Bold Soul Lab is a Mac shop, we use three Windows boxes - all built by yours truly. I'm building a rack mountable XP box for Gigasampler for fairly cheap as well. best idea yet, i got two built for me for free in exchange for services, and they might work with you on the cost </font>[/QUOTE]Shit - I would build one just for kicks. Once I did it blindfolded! I set the mainboard in the case, put a bandana over my eyes and got everything installed in 30 minutes. PCI boards and everything! I took the bandana off my eyes, plugged the power in, set the bios up and BAM!

Oh shit...my inner geek is showing. I can still fight, muhphakas! graemlins/rofl.gif

Also, tell him I said he's fat and lazy. He'll love that. graemlins/rofl.gif Yes, a notebook is absolutely necessary. I've been using one at work for the last two years and don't every want to go back. Ultimately what I want is a notebook, a good docking station and monitor/printer/(maybe) keyboard at home. I love the mobility and the storability of this little dynamo. These days, you can get hard drives as big as any desktop. As far as upgrades are concerned, I'm all but done with opening up boxes. I did it for years and that was fine, but not I'm moving toward the hand-down method, where I hand my old machine down to my young ones coming up. If I must upgrade, I got a guy...

Help in Chicago? No help to me. I'm in NY and haven't been to Chi in over 20 years. I should probably look for someone closer to home. graemlins/grinyes.gif

Seriously, I really think notebooks are the wave of the future for home, maybe even for office. Desktop = 2 big boxes (monitor and brains) and the furniture to accommodate them.
