View Full Version : Is your computer being hit by viruses constantly, like mine?

What is up with all these viruses, worms, trojan horses , and all the rest? I'm getting hit with them left and right, according to my Norton 2002 anti-virus. Auto protect is on, and I get a warning as I'm on line saying I've been hit. But then I do a scan of the harddrive with the antivirus, and it indicates nothing. According to the scan, there is nothing. I do the live update every day that I'm on now. I don't have to turn the computer off, do I?
My time online, on the computer is limited enough as it is. Shall I just stay off?
Help, people.

I use Netzero to connect to the internet. Was told that Netzero maybe a haven for viruses and the like. Any truth to that?
what is your anti-virus methodology?

Do you constantly get bombarded with ads, too? If so, get Ad-Aware. Sometimes when you DL stuff you get these "spyware" programs which may or may not come infected with viruses. I run Norton and Ad-Aware all the time. It's free to DL so check it out.

i'm using the same norton. i'm told there are better ones. norton is retired from the biz. symantic only uses his name.
i forget my passwords, so i foolishly had a nice and easy one for the windows admin password for this computer.
i changed it.
it should help.
in the meantime, regedit, delete delete delete, ..

you sure there's no virus in that DL?
that would be a cruel irony.
kidding, thanks for letting me know.
Just keep your AV software updated and don't post your email addy on newsgroups, mailing lists, or websites unless they are secure and trustworthy sites that you know will keep your privacy protected.

I may be wrong but I think that sometimes a pop up ad may be viewed as a virus by norton...

Help, people. Christian, I'm wondering if...
a) the notices you get indicate that your computer is getting infected
or
b) the notices you get indicate that emails you are receiving (or files you are downloading) containt virus AND that your software is disabling those virus before infection.
I'm thinking "b" since you are not turning up any viruses when you do a scan.

* zonelabs (unless you're running windows XP with it's inbuilt firewall)
* run ad-aware once in a while
* a good and frequently updated virus-scanner.. i use eTrust EZ Antivirus
* if you're really serious about spam etc. use something like SpamAssasin : http://saproxy.bloomba.com/

darrow. nothing to do with email. i am on the internet (DHP, whatever) and BLAMMO BLAMMO KAZOW!
13 dufferent viruses have hit me in 1 minute, or whatever.
I changed my windows 2k password, it is helping, i think.
with one of the removal tools i used, it did indicate a virus and deleted 5 files.
Backdoor.roxy was the latest one in question today. It put a file payload.dat in my C drive. right at the root, and changed some registry settings.

Today was particularily bad, but I'm just noticing that I get hit a few times in a week. wondering if that is normal these days. usually, I can easily quarinteen. But the thing is, I never know WHAT I am quaranteeing (sp?) and whether it will affect the preformance of my system by isolating it.
(of course, I should pretendI'm on a T1 and google everything everyday, but alas, i don't)

i'm told by my internet security guru, my aunt, who used to work in the field, that a firewall is almost mandatory these days. routers are good too.
but you know. all this means I need a job...
she and i have been in the same boat, with no job. except she is older and lives in nyc, and her husband still has his job, thank god.
i think i could find her a job easier than for myself, and she could find one for me. that would actually work. hmmmmm/.....
anyway, back to the subject, viruses. dontcha love em.

NEVER mess with the registry if you aren't sure about what you are doing. Also, before making any changes ALWAYS make a back-up of the registry. Sounds to me like you have spyware on your 'puter. Download and install Spybot S&D (http://shinobiresources.com/Downloads/spybot/spybotsd12.exe) and run it. You will be surprised at the results you come up with. Some people prefer using Ad-Aware, but it doesn't work as great as Spybot S&D. Trust me! This works. Hope it helps you.

You may want to check your security settings in your browser. Make things a bit more restrictive at least.
Anyways...PM me if you want.

something you typed made me wonder...are you connected directly to the internet on DSL or Cable Modem?
If so...you definitely need a firewall. You are leaving your computer and all it's contents extremely vulnerable. That setup is especially dangerous if you have any financial and personal info on your pc (quicken, microsoft money, etc.).

she mentioned spyware too. downloading now. thanks.
darrow, i gotta get off the computer soon. i'll call you.
i'll raise the settings for the browser.

In addition to getting Ad-Aware I suggest you try Spybot Search & Destroy which is also available free at download.com (http://www.download.com). It has been noted to find stuff that Ad-Aware misses. I run it frequently although I have never been attacked.

Sorry I'm on a Mac. We don't get many viruses in fact most viruses we would get would be from window files. I can count on 2 fingers how many times I've had a virus warning and even those were because I went specifically looking for virus & trojans on underground sites. I use Norton and have seen warnings twice in 7 years.

Also My MAC which was brought in 96 is still serving as my production system all I did was increase memory, add an external hard drive and replace the processor mother/daughter card every two years and I stay current. I recently added a firewire card so now I can take advantage of the faster peripherals out there.
Mac is the way to go!

I just tried Spybot S&D and now my computer is running much faster!! It was getting slow and driving me insane. wow. hail.gif thank you graemlins/thumbsup.gif
Hey C hristian
Since you're only browsing while all this is happening, and in my experience 99% of viruses are email activated, I'm wondering if what you're experiencing is the new wave of NetBIOS spam popups...
I've noticed this mostly on WinXP, but might be an issue with Win2K as well. Microsoft OS allow MSN messenger NetBIOS traffic to get to your PC if you don't have a firewall, and people are using this protocol to send popup windows directly to your desktop.
I reckon Norton 2002 will likely determine these to be intrusive or malicious and so may report them as viruses. It might help if you disable NetBIOS (which shouldn't affect your connection at all).
For more info, check these links:
http://www.hooverwebdesign.com/templates/stop-messenger.html
http://www.itc.virginia.edu/desktop/docs/messagepopup/
Hope this might help... it's the only thing I can think of that might hit you as requently while surfing.
Good luck
roki

thanks roki. that doesn't seem to be a problem.
the virus hits seem to have gone down dramatically after fixing every one and using spyware search and destroy.
thank you.
will let you know if anything else happens.

Yup, the new Blaster virus is in effect and kicking. Today my company, which is the largest telecom corporation in Scandinavia and the Baltic states, have been completely f0cked over by the virus. I came in this morning at 9.30 and now, almost 4 hours later, I'm finally logged in and online.
I just downloaded Spybot S&D and my computer is flying now...I didn't realize there was so much crap on it!
