JENNIFER LOPEZ TEAMS UP WITH HBO TO
PRODUCE HER FIRST DOCUMENTARY FILM, ABOUT
CUBAN-AMERICAN GIRLS’ RITE OF PASSAGE
NEW YORK, Sept. 9, 2003 -- HBO and Jennifer Lopez’ Nuyorican Productions are producing a documentary feature film about Los Quinces, a traditional coming-of-age ball marking a Cuban girl’s 15th birthday. The film will have a theatrical release first and then make its TV debut on HBO.
Making her first foray into the documentary arena, Lopez will produce through her Nuyorican Productions. First-time director Vincent Castellanos will direct the film, which will be shot in and around Miami later this year. Also producing for Nuyorican is Julio Caro (“The Cell”). For HBO, Jackie Glover will act as supervising producer and Sheila Nevins will executive produce.
“This is a hot and vibrant concept,” commented Nevins, who is executive vice president, original programming, HBO. “Jennifer’s idea gives an audience something to laugh about, to celebrate, and to dance to.”
“At Nuyorican, we are committed to producing unique and provocative films, so a documentary on this tradition is a natural fit for us,” said Lopez. “We are excited that Sheila and her team at HBO took so well to the concept.”
According to Caro, “Jennifer has great intuition, and her instincts with this project have proven right on. This Cuban-American tradition encompasses everything that is important to her: family, love, music and dancing.”
Every year, thousands of young Cuban girls go through a similar rite of passage, marking what is, for many, the single most important day of their lives. Told through the eyes of a young Cuban-American girl living in Miami, the documentary will follow the unfolding drama of one family’s journey through the escalating passions, joys and conflicts of a rich cultural tradition.
