Man,it is not what it used to be.I used to get to read about crimes and stories not reported in other papers. The paper is just like Ebony to me.You give that shit to an 9 yr. old to read.
Since they(Sengstake)sold the paper,to I have not bought an issue.

Hey Rich,
I still buy the Chicago Defender! I pick it up right along with the Sun-Times. I also get the NY Times via e-mail each day. I like to stay up on the news/current events.
You are right about the content though. They really need to expand the paper to at least 25 - 30 pages minimum. Too many pages for funeral listings!!!
ps: Congrats to you and Sadar on Saturday nights' party. Sorry I couldn't make it (early day on Sunday), but I heard you beat the box!!!

You're hurtin' me guys. I represent the new owners of Sengstacke Enterprises (which publishes the Defender and black newspapers in Detroit, Memphis and Pittsburgh). Spent nearly the last 5 years working on the deal, and boy could I tell you stories... Your observations and criticisms are well-deserved (although I think the quality and content is slowly improving), but suffice it to say that the new owners have plans to modernize and upgrade the paper in a major way, but are saddled with tremendous debt and obligations that were inherited from prior ownership. Trust me when I tell you that my guys rescued this very important institution, which was almost no more. Stick with them, and please buy and read the Defender. It has a ways to go, but I find something worth reading in there most days.
And yes, it's still 100% black-owned.

In New York, Amsterdam News is still going strong.
However, I still miss the take no prisoners City Sun. Great paper to read in the 1980s, especially with all the racial/Ed Koch bullshit going down then. Peace.
