Forbidden Love - Disco Standard/Classic

Carol Jiani
Hit and Run Lover - See it on lots of comps. Doesn't blow me away, but it OK.

Thompson Twins Hold Me Now - Radio rotation pop music. Nice song, but far from obscure.

Amant
If There's Love - Another compilation haunter. Doesn't move me.

Dolly Parton / Kenny Rogers Island In The Stream - BLAZING joint. I'd drop this in a set taped or live. But then, I'm insane.

Arpeggio
Love and Desire - Disco Classic/Standard

Weather Girls No One Can Love You More Than Me
HOT, HOT, HOT. Down-tempo. Beautiful.

Sarah Dash
Sinner man - Disco Classic/Standard

Queen Samantha 2
Take A Chance - Just got this one on a comp. Dropped it in my latest mix for the DHP(Disco 082903). VERY, VERY hot. Also check out "Singing Hallelujah" by Queen Samantha. Nice funky Disco.

Ralph Carter When You're Young And In Love - Got this one on a few comps. There's no nice way to put this. It sucks.

Lou Rawls
You'll Never Find Another Love - C'mon man.... You've heard this one...

Lime Your Love - Nice cut. You've gotta kinda dig the 80's and Lime.

Some good stuff, some okay, some awful...

Terri Desario ~ Ain't Nothing Gonna Keep Me From You - An excellent disco era track. Lotsa energy, beautiful break. An old favorite of mine! I believe the BeeGees wrote, produced and sang backup on this song!

Jermaine Jackson & Pia Zadora ~ When The Rain Begins to Fall - Pass on this one! Crappy, cheesey, 80's Dance pop! In other words, it blows! graemlins/puke.gif

Anything by the Communards - graemlins/puke.gif Over synthesized, high energy dance crap...

Alan Parsons ~ Eye In The Sky - Good stuff! Dreamy, complex mellowed out Rock. Great basslines on some tunes. Heavy orchestration on others. If you have a really good stereo system, the sonics on this record will blow you away...

I'm a big Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons fan, love the energy and sentimental lyricism of their songs.

Grace Jones - I know she's strange as hell, but her music is very interesting, entertaining and catchy. Remember "I'm Not Perfect, But I'm Perfect For You", "Slave To The Rhythm" and "Pull Up To The Bumper"? Good stuff!

I'd get hold of anything by Sara Dash just to look at her picture on the cover!! Good gosh that women was the sexiest thing around back in the day...

Lou Rawls - graemlins/thumbsup.gif What a voice!! Like butter on hot toast! A true R&B balladeer!

Hope this helps...

Peace,
HML

Say John, The song 'In the name of love', by Sharon Redd is very underrated to me, I think it came out in 1982, 'Beat the street', And 'Can you Handle it', Received alot of notoriety back in the day in New York, But, I've always felt that 'In the name of love was one of Sharon Redd's best songs, Also, The song 'Loving you, Losing you', By Phyllis Hyman is another song that is vastly underrated, Frankie Crocker used to rock 'Loving you, Losing you', Hard back in 1977(Frankie Crocker gave any record by Phyllis Hyman alot of exposure back in the late 70's to Early 80's, 'And Loving you, Losing you', Was Phyllis Hyman's first solo record to get airplay in New York in 1977), Also, Here's a few Dance music songs by Phyllis Hyman that you may want to look out for, That never did receive the exposure that i felt they should have.
1.Sweet Music
2.I ain't asking
3.How Long(Produced by Nick Martinelli/To me, Phyllis Hyman's best Dance record).
4.Don't want to change the world
Sometimes i get upset when i hear cats only rocking 'You know how to love me', On the regular, And being totally unaware of songs like 'Under your spell', And others through the years that maybe alot of cats/Young Ladies who just started to get into Phyllis Hyman's music are not up on, The same thing can be said about Minnie Riperton, Who made more than her share of very nice Dance songs back in the day.

Stephanie Mills Never Felt Love Like This Before-ultra romantic, not for sarcastic characters

Suzy Q- Computer Music - ewwwww. i play her track come on to the party on zyx

Grace Jones- La Vie En Rose - a french chanson cover version pretty close to the known versions, no dance beat to it (it's also 3/4) but her presentation's amazing as always

The Communards Never Can Say Goodbye- top 20 hit from the 80s, funny

Valery Allington
Stop

Dubby percussive Italo instrumental by Sangy. Get it or hand it over! Hit me on the email if you need a sample.

Venus Dodson Night Rider

Pretty good disco vocal. Patrick Adams on production IIRC. Look for Shining by her which is a bangin Tee Scott mix.

The Twins Face To Face, Heart To Heart-Great Depeche Mode style dance track...

Vivian Vee Give Me A Break-Classic 80's Disco track. Vocals are so-so but the music is great...

Alison Moyet Invisible-Stick with her Yaz material...

Jolo Last Call-Great Hi-NRG track. I believe these gals sang backup vocals on some Patrick Cowley tracks (Take You Home). Check out "Cuba Libre" by this duo also...

Menage Memories-For some reason this song is big at Filipino weddings (at least in Northern California)...

Helen Terry Now That You're Mine-Never heard this but she used to do backup vocals for Culture Club

Lisa-Rocket To Your Heart-Love this song, great Hi-NRG cut. Check out the Hot Tracks re-edit...

Real Life Send Me An Angel-Classic 80's new wave track, surprised you don't know this. The synth riff is a killer...

Charity Sweet Conversation-Great Hi-NRG track, used to bump this in high school

Blancmange That's Love That It Is-Good song (just saw the video on VH1 classics last night) but check out some of their earlier tracks like "Living on the Ceiling" and "Blind Vision"...

Oh Romeo-These Memories-Hi-NRG track produced by Bobby O. Track has a nice piano solo in it but overall the song is pretty sappy...

Bardeaux-Three Time Lover-Hi-NRG duo produced by Jon St. James (Stacey Q), just ok...

Lime-Wake Dream-Lime is cheesy but their songs were catchy as hell...

Lime Your Love-See Above

Teri DeSario
Ain't Nothing Gonna Keep Me From You

just take HML's word for it:) this is pop-styled disco done right...

Cut Glass
Alive With Love

Rose Lauren American Love
Jermaine Jackson / Pia Zadora And When The Rain Begins To Fall

just like HML stated, this is crappy, mid-80s pop which is best avoided....Ms. Zadora had an unstomachable top 40 hit around 1983 whose name escapes me but it was annoying allover.

Cerrone Call Me Tonight

this was from his Cerrone V album of 1979 if memory serves me right...very long and lush with a slight rockish edge, i recommend finding the cerrone iv album for his other gems like "je suis music" and "rocket in the pocket"...cerrone v has other gems such as "angelina" with reggae and rock undertones as well as the midtempo "not too shabby"

Technique
Can We Try Again

Miquel Brown
Close To Perfection

Suzy Q
Computer Music

Noel Dancing is Dangerous

Voggue Dancin' The Night Away

this was a Canadian female duo (Montreal if i remember correctly) which recorded this song in 1981 for Atlantic records...it has a casual, mid-tempo pace to it coupled with a prominent string section, a very good club record....everytime i hear this song, i unlogically think of ice skaters at Rockefeller Center right around Thanksgiving or so...definetly pick this up...

Beagle Music Ltd
Daydream

The Communards Disenchanted

Ray Vista
Don't Let Go

Watson Beasley
Don't Let Your Chance Go By

Watson and Beasley were yet another Montreal-based act which hit paydirt with this song...it's a mid-tempo, heavily-synthed affair from 1980 that is quite underrated...i am especially fond of the electric piano in this song...out on the warner brothers label....go get it!

Faith Hope and Charity
Don't Pity Me

Time Bandits
Endless Road

Alan Parsons Project Eye In The Sky

again, i agree with my good friend HML...great mellow rock which works especially for those early morning sets...

The Twins
Face To Face, Heart To Heart

Idris Muhammad For Your Love

Madleen Kane
Forbidden Love

with an appearance not unlike Cheryl Ladd, Ms. Kane parlays her talents into the disco bandwagon on one of her Warner Brothers outings....in my book, this album is so-so with rather mediocre arrangements and lackluster vocals...skip it.

France Joli Girl In The 80's

i am not familiar with this song, but let me ask you: was this from her 1983 album on Columbia? i ask this because a few years ago, i saw that album on sale and i played it in the turntable....if you see her 1983 album, avoid it like the plague for it is plagued with crappy, forgettable tunes that clearly shows her desperation in appeasing to the pop-leaning, new-wavish contingent which met with disasterous results....stick to her Prelude material, especially the "Now" album from 1982 produced heavily by Ray Reid of Crown Heights Affair (and includes some of that groups personnel), which has the hits "gonna get over you" and "take a chance on my love" not to mention the gem cut "your good love"....

Vivian Vee Give Me A Break

this was an Italian-based artist whose said song came out in its home country in 1979 but arrived in stateside shores a bit later on around 1980....this disco hit lacked in the strings but had some solid synth parts going for it.....the vocals are almost a caricture which revolves around a woman who is fighting the lustful tactics of a prospective male lover....despite the fact, this is one happy record and is a must-have:)

Patrick Cowley Goin Home (Remix)
Masquerade
Guardian Angel

Odyssey Hang On

Vivian Vee
Heartbreak

Frankie Valli Heaven Above Me
Big Ben Tribe
Heroes

Michael Narada Walden
High Above the Clouds

Carol Jiani
Hit and Run Lover

a monster hi-energy hit from 1981 ....prodigous vocals coupled by a musical soundscape that is similar to Lime. another must-grab...

Thompson Twins Hold Me Now
this synthed-out pop hit from around 1983 has a laid-back feel to it...i am smitten with this one...

Jimmy Ruffin
Hold On To My Love

this was an anthem at NYC's Saint club in its heyday and was the final song played there when it closed down in 1988. originally out on the RSO label around 1980, many of its adherents claim this song as a proto-high-energy tune (subject to debate.)

Mystery
Hold On To This Moment

The Passengers Hot Leather

Jackie Moore
How's Your Love Life Baby

Hot on the heels of her dancefloor hit "This Time Baby", Ms. Moore lays down the lyrical aesthetic of southern soul adapted for the discotheques, Jackie sings about coming across an ex-lover and expresses her concerns about his current love life...not only do i recommend this song, but also her stuff during her Atlantic years especially her early dancefloor song, "Time".

Freddie Mercury
I Was Born To Love You

Rainey
I Can Fly

Chanson I Can Tell

this was a male duo that were the heart of this studio group which employed backup female vocalists...out on the Ariola label, "I Can Tell" is a very good disco tune, not too fast, replete with soaring, dramatic strings ...another song i recommend from them is the funk-edged "Don't Hold Back".

Buck's Fizz
I Hear Talk

Sandy Mercer
I Think I'll Do Some Stepping On My Own

Rudy Wilson
I Thought I Would Never Find Love

Amant
If There's Love

one of the best-known disco classics on TK's Marlin label...this is essential, enough said:) producer was (i think???) Ray Martinez, who later had an album on Prelude for his studio group "Passion" around 1979/80, whose provacative album cover can not be missed....speaking of "Passion", they had a outstanding club single in 1982 called something to the extent of "don't stop your love(???)" also on the Prelude label.

Men Without Hats
I Got The Message

Julia & Company
I'm So Happy

Time Bandits
I'm Specialized In You

Helen Reddy
Imagination

Sheryl Lee Ralph
In The Evening

recorded in 1984, this is a rather fast, high-energy affair....melody is rather unmemorable and cold....scrap this one...

Sharon Redd
In The Name Of Love

from her 1982 "Redd Hott" album, this is styled more in the high-energy idiom....personally, i was never too crazy for this song but if you're really into that early-mid 80s hi-energy sound, you can't go wrong....to me, the gems here are "never gonna give you up", "you're the one", and especially the perennial "beat the streets".

Hit List Into The Fire
Alison Moyet
Invisible

Dolly Parton / Kenny Rogers Island In The Stream

poppy fodder from 1983, quite cheezy...stay away from it unless you plan to drop this song at a party as a gag.

Gladys Knight & The Pips It's A Better Than Good Time

out on the Buddah label around 1978, this is one of her better-known disco songs next to "taste of bitter love" and their cover of "bougie bougie". a quality song through and through....

Alma Faye
It's Over

it's over???? not until this record is in your hands! it was recorded for casablanca records, but it strangely did not have a popish approach to the melody....go grab this one:)

USA / European Connection I Want to Get Closer
North End Kind Of Life (Kind Of Love)

Grace Jones
La Vie En Rose

Jolo
Last Call

a 1984 outing on San Francisco's hi-energy stalawart, "Megatone", pulsating synths maintain a good amount of consistency in this record....this is hi-energy done right! i recommend this one especially if you're into the classic, hi-energy sound.

Average White Band
Let's Go Round Again

Sonia Belolo
Lifedance

Dennis Parker
Like An Eagle

out on Casablanca, the melody isn't bad but Parker's vocals are a big letdown in this song...then again, Parker's claim to fame was the porn movie industry (which he alludes to in an album track called something to the extent of "In New York (???)"... i would skip this over.

Liquid Gold My Baby's Baby

hyperfast rhythm delivery by this UK act, the song itself is not bad although the vocals can use some more oomph...don't spend too much money on this record, but if you like this song, i would also seek their 1980 hit "Dance Yourself Dizzy".

Arpeggio
Love and Desire

another hyperfast disco tune, this song is busy with all sorts of retro-laser gun sounds thrust upon the listener while the synths keep the tune perculating rapidly...couple it with a solid vocal ensemble and you got a sureshot disco classic produced by Simon Soussan who originally spearheaded the group Shalimar in its infancy and parlayed his formula into other acts such as French Kiss of "Panic" fame and Jessica Williams (Queen of Fools) on his Harem imprint (distributed by Polydor)...grab this one!

Michael Bow Love and Devotion

Elizabeth Daily
Love In The Shadows

Cerrone Love Is Me
Fern Kinney
Love Me Tonight

Johnny Bristol Love No Longer Has A Hold On Me

Mr. Bristol was a fixture in the r&b/soul charts particularly during the mid-seventies...at this juncture, Johnny Bristol is past his heydays yet his talents have not diminished when he made this outing for Handshake records. what stands out here are the horn stabs that seem to pay tribute to Teddy Pendergrass's "I Don't Love You Anymore" to a certain extent...this is a dancefloor stomper set in the traditional soul idiom...recommended.

Lama
Love On The Rocks

The Dream Academy The Love Parade
Phyllis Hyman
Lovin' You, Losin' You

Zarathustra
Magic Nights

Debbie Jacobs
Maybe This Time

Menage
Memories

from my vague recollections on this song, i think it cashed on on the popularity of the Broadway show "Cats" set to a rather dismal hi-energy backdrop...cheezy..i'd skip it..

Hush
My Heart's on Fire

The Communards Never Can Say Goodbye

Stephanie Mills
Never Felt Love Like This Before

an essential from 1980...enough said!

Jeanne Shy
Night Dancer

Venus Dodson Night Rider

this is a quality disco stomper...don't walk...RUN to get THIS RECORD!

Weather Girls No One Can Love You More Than Me
Amanda Lear No Regrets
Helen Terry Now That You're Mine
Randy Crawford
One Day, I'll Fly Away

Time Bandits
Only A Fool

Digital Game
Please Don't Go

Peru Point of Compass
Buddy Miles
Pull Yourself Together

J. Michael Reed
Reach Out For Love

Lisa
Rocket To Your Heart

i may not be right, but this sounds like a mid-1980s high-energy outing on a California-based label whose label art had two dynamite sticks to it...if it's what i am thinking, i would go ahead and grab this...this is another example of hi-energy done right with various keyboard peaks and then easing down just a bit yet keeping the listener/dancer on the edge....she also did a cover of "love is like an itching in my heart" which is nice...

Santana
Say It Again

Real Life
Send Me An Angel

The Adventures
Send My Heart

Three Degrees
Set Me Free

Sarah Dash
Sinner man

Viola Wills
Somebody's Eyes

Valery Allington
Stop

i would definelty go with this one....the "soul" mix on this single is my favorite with its slower approach....vastly underrated classic.

Charity Sweet Conversation

Queen Samantha 2
Take A Chance

just like Ms. Dodson's "Night Rider"..don't walk...RUN and GRAB!

Vera
Take Me To The Bridge

this was a fast-disco affair from 1980 on Rio (???) records out of Canada (???), pretty good.

The Associated Take Me To The Girl
Blancmange That's Love That It Is
Usa/European Connection
There's A Way Into My Heart

Oh Romeo
These Memories

high-energy from around 1983-84 or so...not bad although the vocals are melodramatic especially during the chorus parts.

Bardeaux
Three Time Lover

Rhetta Hughes
Throwin' It All Away

not familiar with this one, but her "sending an sos" tune from 1975 is very good.

Edwin Hawkins Singers
Tomorrow

not familiar with this song in particular although i would go out on a limb to buy this record, since quite a few of their material works on the dancefloor...one of the members was Tremaine Hawkins who later on sang on the 1985 dancefloor smash "Fall Down (Spirit Of Love)"

Marlena Ricci Tonight

Fantasy Too Much, Too Soon
this was done in 1982 as a followup to "you're too late" although i never personally heard the song....given my penchant for 80s r&b and club music, i would personally take a risk on this record if the price's right.

Sarah Dash
Touch And Go

Cerrone
Tripping On The Moon

never was turned on by this song....very unlike Cerrone's trademark lushness, but that's just me...

Viola Wills
Up on the Roof

Kim Carnes Voyeur
Lime
Wake Dream

Terry Iten What A Night
Ralph Carter When You're Young And In Love

Inner City Jam Band
What I Did For Love

dang! i've been on the hunt for this song...lovely, mid-tempo disco song:)

Eugene Record Where Are You

Talk Talk
Why Is It So Hard

Cut Glass
Without Your Love

this was originally recorded for a southern california label called "Earhole" and it garnered enough of a buzz (especially at the clubs) to warrant a wider release via 20th Century Records around 1980 for this female duo. a hyperfast disco record that some claim as a precursor to the high-energy sound that would be pushed by labels such as Megatone and Britain's Passion.

Sandy Mercer
You Are My Love

The Lotus Eaters
You Don't Need Someone New

Kim Carnes
You Make My Heart Beat Faster

Lou Rawls
You'll Never Find Another Love

Lime Your Love

a lot of people scoff at them, but i still have a soft spot in my heart for this Canadian hi-energy act...this was actually the very first 12-inch single i bought on my own....if you like Carol Jiani's "Hit And Run", i would pick this song up without hesitation.

Kelvy,
Dayum baby bruh! You never cease to amaze me with your ENCYCLOPEDIC knowledge of 70's and 80's era Dance, Disco and R&B music!! http://deephousepage.com/smilies/praise2.gif You definitely provided John with a ton of in-depth information. No doubt he's got a good idea which records to explore and which ones to ignore! lol... (I made a rhyme! ;) ) Very cool that you agreed with several of my assessments/comments! http://deephousepage.com/smilies/coolgleamA.gif

HML, what's going down! :D graemlins/OLA.gif actually, i had to go back and edit the cerrone comments since i aimed it from the wrong album, as a matter of fact, that cerrone v album was one of the albums my parents bought to me as a kid as a reward for good grades from this cut-out bin at (of all places) a discount store which dealt mainly with toiletries, cleaning supplies, and cheap stationery. it's just my two cents that i put down...i guess after so many records, something's got to stick. graemlins/rofl.gif

by the way, how is the spinning coming out? also, have you checked your post in the yellorange board about those commercials you can't stand? let me know and speak soon brother! graemlins/cheering.gif

I read your message here, after I posted the last response above.Oh I now see where you got the list mylandofmakebelieve.com

You can hear a many of these tracks on

(click on "area 2" on the bottom left hand side of homepage, and then scroll down to the Disco Vaults. There are currently five seperate Disco Vaults there to choose from, though we are working on many more, and will have them all categorized properly).

Besides being able to hear the tracks, you can also see all the original label copies, and also purchase them,if you'd like.

I was a regular at the Saint in the mid eighties, before it closed, and will be posting some Saint tapes on www.vjsproductionsinc.com (http://www.vjsproductionsinc.com) shortly as well in the "tapes" area.

as a matter of fact this list is from mylandofmakebelieve.com a saint tribute page.. so most of these I knew where saint classics and mos prob hi-nrg or sleaze (love that)..

should have shortened the list

jimmy ruffin-hold on is actually one of my alltime fav songs, missed to erase it.. the lyrics are so simple and effective..

btw what happened to that saint-building?? seems to have been gigantic??

cheers /john John, hope that list helps out...about the Saint Buliding, i'm not sure if its still around, but before its incarnation as the Saint, it was known as the "Fillmore East" if memory serves me right, which held some rock concerts back in the late 60s/early 70s....
