i think it's great that you showcase what Louie was rocking back then when a lot of kats didn't know who he was. me and a few kats from around my way used to live at Heartthrobs. i've already mentioned what the mamis there looked like! the beauty of it all is that Louie played everything: Freestyle, House, Hip-Hop, Alternative, and even some rock/pop stuff like U2 & Love & Rockets.
do you have anything else from that era?

if my memory serves me right Victor, you did some stuff back then with Musto & Bones? i may even have a few joints from back then......

Yes,this is how I knew Louie.Freestyle (as some called it),was his specialty.It was'nt untill 88/89 or so that I really noticed a change in his taste.I believe hanging out at Zanzibar as many of us did,was a contribution to this.
Walked some long blocks on some real cold nights to Hearthrob too,but it was definately well worth it.
Its nice hearing this tape after all this time.
Regarding my productions.I got a job at Shakedown Sounds in 87 (owned by Arthur Baker).My first works were for Criminal/Mimimal Records yes.
Gail Sky King,Juan Kato,Jr Vasquez,Danny Krivit,Benji Candalario,Aldo Marin,Latin Rascals,Johnny Dyell,David Cole,Rober Clivilles,
were just some of MANY that were regularely there,and who shared much knowledge with me.
T. Musto was from Brooklyn too,not far from my place,and his office 4th Floor/Nu Groove (in colloboration with Frank Mendez)/Northcott was around the block from Shakedown (in Manhatten).Lenny D (who also worked at Shakedown),was doing productions for 4th Floor,and he introduced me to Musto.Yes,they were producing Freestyle (as some called it),then too.
Regarding people mixing on Radio He Musto(in partership with his dj partner of the time Tommy Sozzi),were rockin NY radio with their mixes(on KTU)as the Dynamic Duo.

I'm not sure why this style of music was called Freestyle (by some),though I can give you some of my knowledge on the history of it.
In "82" Arthur Baker,John Robie,Afrika Baambata and the Soul Sonic Force,(with some help by JellyBean Benitez and Tom Silverman) created a tune titled "Planet Rock".This one tune,in my book,is the seed that eventually grew into several genres/styles of Dance Music.
"Freestyle" (as some called it) was/is one of them.
From 82 untill Around late 84 there we're countless amounts of tracks and productions combining Bronx style MCing with Electro/Kraftwerk style grooves,as well as R and B style singing with Kraftwerk style grooves.It was'nt untill around mid 85 or so,that a group named TKA came out with a record, I think the title is "One Way Love" (if I'm wrong,please correct me),and Expose came out with a record (help me with the title,their first release)
that Kraftwek style grooves met this style of singing/songs (Yes Debby Deb "When I Hear Music was 84,and so was "Honey To A Bee" I guess these sould sort of fit the category too,though they we're more Funhouse).Tommy Boy,Cutting,we're some of the first labels to release this type of material.Then came more NY labels/groups and Artists and more Miami labels/groups and artists.
103.5 WQHT was now introduced to NY airwaves,with Freestyle (as some called it)a big part of the format.
With the Funhouse now closed,and the times changing,Hearthrob opened.

As I say,I really believe Tony at Zanzibar (and his mix shows),were a contribution to his change in musical taste.One clear moment in that turning point,was Louies mix of Debby Gibson (a Pop/sometimes freestyle artist)which he did House.

i think that Louie's 1st house production was that Chrissy Iiccee(sp) joint.....i forget that name of it now but i have it at home. it was on Atlantic.

Victor, thanks for putting this up. A lot of people do not realize that Louie Vega and others were heavily involved in the freestyle scene during that time period. Some refuse to believe it. One new dj I recently spoke to did not believe me. It has become almost taboo to talk about freestyle within the NYC scene, but it was a big part of the scene in those days. I remember magazine articels during the time about it, with pictures of Louie vega at various freestyle parties. Even in the UK magazines like ID. Other names worth moting involved in that scene and the house/freestyle hybrid were Todd Terry, Kenny Dope, Lenny Dee, Tommy Musto, Frankie Bones, Joey Beltram etc...

Freestyle, yes, I'd describe it as underground latin dance music with a miami bass similar rhythm (errr, not sure it's the best description though - most producers did come from Florida, ya?). Some of the beats reminds me of electro meets Afrika Bambata. The music was very dramatic, lots and lots of love songs. I remember going nuts on Noel's "Silent Morning". Listening to the mix now, thanks.
