Roy Ayers is a fnckin musical genius.

He's the man...a Jazz musician's musician,
a serious composer/arranger/producer,
father of million sample-based recordings,
Funky-ass dance-music creator too.

I couldn't find too much, but here's a link or two:

There are more, just google "roy ayers".

Unfortunately the "official" site seems to be
under construction.

Believe it or not, the first time I became consciously aware of his music
was on my very first night visiting the Paradise Garage.
I heard Larry play "Running Away" and I was too shy to ask any of the hundreds of heads who did that song.
Instead, for the next couple of months, I was trying to describe the song to anyone who would listen.
Unfortunately, I couldn't remember the most important trainspotting clue, that is to say the
lyrical refrain of
"Shoobie doo...run run run..."

Without that clue, it's kinda hard to describe
the song, what with it's ultra-sophisticated and melodically complex bass-line, and the really clever call and response "dialogue" between the male and female singers.
Finally, I found my sweat-stained, crumpled-up, barely legible "notes" I'd scribbled that night on the dance-floor, and the next person I described it to, using the Shoobie Doo, knew right away what it was.

Now let me get back to work so I can save up for one of those amazing
"Best of" compilations of his incredible work!

A couple months aago, I was in Central Park waiting for Chaka to play, and "Running Away" came on over the system. Although overplayed (in Chi anyway) I hadn't heard the cut in awhile so I was groovin, as were many folks around me...you know, chair-dancing and singing along.

So I hear behind me two small voices just belting it out as though they'd been hearing it for 30 years! Turns out the voices were were coming from these two little boys, no older than 9 to maybe 12 years old!

Just a testament that good music transcends time, age, and everything in between. graemlins/grinyes.gif

I mean I've heard all the call and response and overdubbed vocal stuff a million times before, but that night I HEARD it. Wow.

I played "I Know You Care" by Ethel Beatty, and "All Alone" by Sylvia Striplin at the Kuo party. Thanks for the music Roy!

HAPPY BDAY!

http://deephousepage.com/smilies/party421.gif </font>[/QUOTE]yes ya'll. two of the most underated IMO being:

"one sweet love (to remember)" off "Vibrations"
and
"sweet tears" off "Let's Do It"

I have never heard these out at any type of party. Ok, maybe "sweet tears" once. oh well!

We used to play "Come out and Play", "The Memory", "Sweet Tears", "Toybox", "Evolution", "I Wanna Feel It", "Fast Money", "Hey Uh-What You Say Come On", "Can't You See Me", "Our Time is Coming" and "Don't Fight the Feeling" at the Ebony Room, Swinger's, and King Solomon's Mines.
Roy Ayers is 63 and still doing it. He's editor of a magazine in Chicago.
