Did New Beat catch on in the US? I just did a mix onto CD and put lots of New Beat on it - bass shattering! New Beat ****ing rocked.
I thought this got never crossed our borders, actually..I've to admit i do not know a lot on New Beat..But i heard a nice reportage on Belgian radio last weekend, where the story of Electronic Body Music was told. There are quite a lot of connections between the people who were involved in EBM and New Beat..Some off-the-track EBM helped this New Beat take off..Some names of Belgian groups that where mentionned are Split Second (?) , Neon Judgement, 2 Belgen and Arbeid Adelt..Some of their most obscure stuff was really dance floor minded..A bit with a colder and harder edge, and often using a raw guitar sound, but they defenitly had a bit of a dancefloor feel..Someone they interviewd was that guy from Lords of Acid / Pragha Khan..In the eighties, he had a dance label on which he issued a couple of these songs.
Jolyon, i'm interested to hear that cd you made..can you post it somewhere online ? Is it good enough for the DHP maybe ?

New beat and industrial dance were both HUGE in California in the late 80s and early 90s, before various house genres took over. When I started djing we were playing Front 242, Erotic Dissidents, Dr. Phibes, The B-Sides records, Neon Judgement, A Split Second, Rhythm Device (their track 'Acid Rock' was great!) Skinny Puppy, Liasons Dangereuses, Force Legato, etc. It actually had more of a half-life in california than pretty much anywhere else.

That's why I said that I thought New Beat never made it out of Belgium..It's pretty weird music, not always very serious..A lot of it is just crap..I know there must be some good New Beat though, yet it's rare and like i said, i haven't really come across
it..

We didn't know enough about the origins of new beat at the time to make genre distinctions. I'm sure some of what we lumped under new beat could be put in several other genres, but for us it was distinctly different from say, New Order, Yazoo, Depeche Mode, etc.
P.S. We also would play pretty much anything on Wax Trax records, who licensed a lot of European new beat and industrial records...

From Red D's manner. Remember the old R&S ferrari logo
some of it was dreadfull (lords of acid - hi ho hi ho) some was basic but good
Amnesia - ibiza
The Maxx - cocaine
and some was sounding straight US
Project Club - dance syndrome
certainly attatches to some very vivid memories, I was going to bring some of that last time I went to Belgium but I thought they would be bored with it and I'de be made into flemish stew.
like bringing reggae to a blues in Handsworth, Birmingham

New Beat Take 1 & 2 are two fine compilations to start with.
L&O - Even Now
Boytronic - Brilliant
Amnesia - Ibiza
Erotic Dissidents - Move Your Ass
Lhasa - The Attic
Bazz - House Of Pax (was a bit later)
Major Problem - Acid Queen
Logo - Businessmen
Andromeda - Andromeda
The list goes on and on, and actually only the tempo is a distinct difference between body music and new beat, the rest is indeed hair-splitting (compare it as tech house vs deep house, there is a difference but it's from the same mother ;).

Even when I would stay in Louisiana off and on during the late 80's,I found the "This is New Beat" Comps. The ones(there were several volumes) with the psycedelic women on the front cover. I had to pay an arm and a leg for them, though. I think it faded out with Radical Records in the early 90's. Was there really a Praga Khan version on "Let No Man Put Usunder"? I seem to remember having that for some reason. Peace.
indeed, it's just that you got to know what it is.. smile.gif Just like with disco, there's plenty of shit out there if you only want to look for it..Rare is a bad term... ;)
Thanks for posting those titles..I've seen a lot of those early R&S (ferrari) records in Antwerp as well, yet never really took time to listen .

These are the ones I put on the CD...
The Maxx - Cocaine
John Carpenter - The End
Code 61 - Drop The Deal
A Split Second - Flesh
There was quite a bit of good New Beat - I know a guy with around 500 new beat records - lots pretty obscure and some very good. I liked D-Bop, a great track, the cover of When You Hold Me, 101 - Just As Long As I Got You and Amnesia too.

Code 612 (?) is one I like (may be personsal), a slower tempo, samples from Miami Vice with a haunting middle eastern backing, that was when when with the Ferrari badge.

101 did a version of rock to the beat.

what's weird is that what you guys are describing as new beat, a LOT of folk were into that and they were considered "house" at the time...this was in the early to late 80's, when being "house" was kinda weird, sissy-fied and punkish in chicago...i didn't really get off deep into what they were playing, but i did dress like them and go to a few concerts and parties...some of the music became embraced in the house culture because of those cats...i bet you guys overseas dressed like we did, too... ;) or maybe we copied you...
it would be really nice to hear a mix with that music as i can only recall a few of those names...

that zsa zsa leboum tune is hard to find. flesh is worth quite something too.
i think they made 6 volumes of those newbeat comps, the last two being different from design.

I couldn't "not" play that record, people loved it, if you was going beyond the crowds heads with music, music they may actually have to know how to dance to actually dance to it - and you lose them, then stick Acid Rock on and all the newbie acid teds would be headbanging to that shit, this was around the time a lot of white kids got on board because you didn't have to know how to dance to a lot of New Beat as the beat was so rigid.
Acid Cock I mean Rock
I liked it for a moment for it's novelty the word "Acid" in a track when everyones on Ellis has a strange effect, but I don't believe it aged well, I might have kept a copy for Memory thing - bygone age.
I played at The Hummingbird on Friday nights in 1989 in Birmingam, 2 - 3000 people virtually all on Ellis, they loved that track, but it is just noisey crap really IMHO

After talking about this track, and miss E Fabulous doing her first UK gig, the organiser I met on Saturday was the guy that made this track.

Thanks for posting those titles..I've seen a lot of those early R&S (ferrari) records in Antwerp as well, yet never really took time to listen . He was saying Jesus loves the acid goes for £45 now.
I don't think he did do much else track wise, but I may be wrong.

Does anyone know where the thread is, or have the link, that Lyot posted a long time ago, with 3 short mixes by some DJ who was supposed to be the pioneering new beat DJ from way back... There was a track by Richard Whanfried(aka Klaus Schulze)... anyone know what I'm talking about?

New beat! Yes, it got out of Belgium. In fact these were some of the first "dance" 12"s I ever bought in the mid-late 80s. Much crap, but some good. There was a place called CRAZY RHYTHMS in New Jersey (any NJ people remember this shop on Bloomfield Avenue?) and it had a New Beat section AND an Italo section! I wish I could go back in time and buy some of those Italo records again, although I remember a lot of ZYX, nothing too obscure. I think one of the first 12"s I grabbed was A Split Second and some SSR New Beat comp ('87?) Also a funny old house record by 2 MEN FROM JERSEY called "Trackwerk" (?) which was Todd Terry-sounding stuff mixed with Kraftwerk!
Jersey!!!
