By the time this record gets officially released, they would've probably lost more than half of the projected buyers of this song because they already have it. The only thing that will save this song is a shit load of remixes.

I've noticed lately that there are even two different mixes on CDR now, the original, and one with a little more blaze-like keyboard work. The newer version sounds a little tighter. Perhaps it is finally ready for release...

a similar thing happened with "Slavery Days" (3 Generations Walking). By the time the record came out, it had been played and burned so much that no one really cared...or bought it...the record had great momentum when it was fresh but then... graemlins/conf44.gif
I guess that's the meaning of "slow grave classic"?

Will this song be released on CD for the "Clubheads"?
Will there be additional remixes (it better if they want to put a extra penny in their pocket)?
Are there any license negotiations going on so it can be placed on a couple of Dance Music compilations in the future?
Is there going to be a release party with Vinyl as well as CD giveaways (watch the shit be free, moe money moe money moe money flyin out yo pockets)?
Was this song "the shit" when the execs first heard it, or was it just another record that they decided to "eventully" in the near future release it?
Peace

I don't know what Freddy is waiting for but not releasing it doesn't mean it wont sell! I'll tell you a story. Me and my partner Mark had done a mix of a Rosie Gaines song called "Closer Than Close" now the label " Motown" never put it out and time passed. Comes a year later and someone bootlegged our mix! It sold quite well but still Motown did not put it out. Now came a little Scottish label " Big Bang" and they decide they want to put it out so they licensed it from Motown and since our mix was the one on the bootleg they buy our mix. Now it's almost two years and they get remixes done and they put it out. Bang right out of the box it sold over 200,000 units and enter the top 5 in the British pop charts. It went on to sell over 8 million units when you include compilation albums. So you see not being out doesn't mean it wont sell.

Good point Hippie, but how many Djs had CD burners back in the mid to late 90s compared to now. How many P2P sharing programs were on the net other then Napster? And how many people had the record (when Motown had the rights to it and before it was bootlegged) before it was eventually released.

Yeah we did that too! what's funny is that when Rosie first heard the record she cried cause she thought it was horrible " the munchkin voice thing " and Motown wasn't going to put it out but my friend Eddie Maduro who did a mix they accepted told them put it out just so they get credit. Well Motown put out the mixes in the USA but our mix never made it! The mix they call ours is actually one of Eddies other mixes. Our mix did come out but only on the British Motown release.

The kick drum on that record is just ridiculous.

It wasnt Jon mancini was it???
Hippie

Can't remember there names but the owner of the label was called Bobo!
Hippie, those remixes of Rosie Gaines were (and still are) incredible :D (Do you and Mark plan to do any more Mentor productions or remixes in the future?)
I think a lot's changed since 96/97, though. That record was bootlegged twice (once with an Smack mix of SWV on the other side, and again with a Kelly G remix of Tina Moore) but still went on to sell loads of copies when it came out commercially. Not only were cd-rs and downloading nowhere near as prevalent, as Groove mentioned, but it also had a few more hot remixes on the finished label copy (including a mad revocalled version in French, if memory serves). Hopefully Shelter have something tucked up their sleeves when this finally drops...

There were two things with the Rosie Gaines record. First and foremost it was a hot track, period.
Secondly, it coincided with the birth of the speed garage scene, at that time it was called happy house. It was one of the few tracks that actually had a vocal, and it got played by EVERYONE, EVERYWHERE, ALL THE TIME!
It actually started in the soulful house scene, as an anthem with Paul Trouble, Zoo, myself etc, and then the speed garage boys picked up on it. The timing was just right with that record.
Not taking anything away from Rosie, or Hippie and Mark(don't shoot me now), but if that record came out earlier, or later, it is possible it wouldn't have been so hugely succesful.
And it was always about the Mentor mix btw, the remixes were just done to keep the GrooveVictim types happy, but they didn't get too many plays.
Side note: I had an opportunity to give that track a UK premier on radio. The a&r at Motown had just recieved the DAT, and I was doing a guest spot on Kiss that night. He let me borrow the DAT, and I was feeling the track, but it was just a little too slow compared to the rest of what I had lined up, so I didn't play it. http://deephousepage.com/smilies/conf45.gif
Oh well, I can't break ground all the time!
Maybe in retrospect it is good I didn't play it, maybe just maybe had I played it, Motown UK would have decided to release it in the UK, thus letting the track out too early, and we wouldn't be having this convo now.
I'll be quiet now. ;)
Interesting points. That was definitely a good time for house music in the UK as tracks like...
Byron Stingily - Get up everybody
Ultra Nate - Free
Roy Davis Jnr / Peven Everett - Gabrielle
Somore / Damon Trueitt - I refuse
Kim English - Supernatural / Learn to love
...were not only slammin' tracks in their own rights, but they were being bought and played by a whole range of people. All of the above were licensed from their original US labels to subsidiaries of UK majors and, consequently, had extra exposure on radio and TV and possibly even videos (I remember the Get Up one, as I think it featured loads of Chicago legends gettin' down in the background smile.gif )
It's hard to imagine any of this happening today, which is a shame really as some of the songs coming out now are just as strong as these.

As you said Ultra Nate,Rosy Gaines did it already in the earli 90s.Inafct id imagine that there are maybe even more top tunes coming out nowadays that could cut the mustard!
The quality of the equipment has also made a difference to the sound nowadays. Many ppl in here will argue that the music now is not a patch on the early 90s but to be honest everythinbg always looks rosier when you look back the way!!I think house is alive and well and there should be more down to get ppl on a house tip!!
If i was a Radio 1 Dj id be killin sum fat ass cuts!! :D

Hell, the majors even had their own house ACTS (see Ten City, Bas Noir, Jomanda, Robert Owens, Jovonn, Michael Watford etc)

1st. You're right about the Mentor mix being the seller on this record.
2nd Yes Rosie came out just when speed garage starting taking off in fact some of the speed garage pioneers told us back then that our record was one of the leaders for them.
3rd. I've heard this line about coming out at the right time before, in fact when I did "You're Gonna Miss Me" people said it did so well because everyone was into Acid and that record was so different. So I don't know if timing has much to do with it but if it does I can't wait for my next record I'm hoping it goes number 1 on the pop charts. And soon Mark and me will be working on some production. Peace fellas

these guys just aren't good businessmen, like most producers and dj's, no wonder europe reigns supreme in sales and distribution despite the fact the music is sub-par compared to ours.

Mickey B </font>[/QUOTE]ahahahahahaha. I've been hearing it all over and wondering what it was. See if it really is an anthem, people will buy it, but an average track that everyone got on Soul Seek, forget it, people won't bother. Say you hear an average track in the store and you don't buy it, then somehow you find it on the net and download it. You don't dig it that much, but you play it once during a gig. Who's paying who?
